It was a beautiful day on Krakoa, the living island parked in the pacific ocean far away from any other land mass to protect its inhabitants from the constant risk that had come with living in other civilizations. Although, despite being the perfect oasis for Mutants to gather and live in prospected harmony and peace, there was always something detracting from that ideal. Whether it was the questioning of how to divide space when so many had grudges with another from the worse choices that always had to be made by someone, the amount of space dedicated to housing when clearing more meant harming the very mutant that gave them the protection they needed, and a few… Important to some dilemmas that were always going down. That’s why Gabby called a meeting withone of her siblings, a sister to be precise! Her sister named Laura. But, the version of her sister named Laura that wasn’t scarred from being assumed dead and left… Alone… Being tortured- You know, that was a very emotional situation that Gabby was in the middle of that she hadn’t really let herself have the time to think about? Cause, like, what could she even say? She’s sorry? That she didn’t know that she might’ve been alive and that her “resurrection” was just another cloning process?
“Laura!” Gabby called in a cheer from the small picnic blanket she set up next to one of the many beautiful spots, and luckily free despite the day being so warm, on the beach! So warm, in fact, that you could call it humid. And, if it wasn’t for the fact that the air clung to everyone’s skin like a sticky hug that you would rather die than be apart of easily relayed that information to almost every inhabitant of this great nation; the fact Gabby’s curly hair was in a massive, frizzed mess that was easy to spot out from the treeline a few hundred feet away! “Get over here already, we’ve got to start the girltalk before Jonathan gets back with the watermelon!”
It’s about making time. That’s what Laura has to remind herself of occasionally: making time for people she cares about. Laura’s sometimes standoffish nature isn’t indicative about how she feels about the people she loves. Her resurrection after the Vault was something she tried to brush past; it was easier to ignore the fact that she had lived hundreds of years and possessed none of the memories. As a result, she had thrown herself into the X-Men. She had stayed in the Treehouse in Manhattan and devoted herself to saving people — something that she was really good at. It had meant less time was spent with Gabby. Yes, Laura had felt guilty about it. That hadn’t stopped her from pulling away in order to bury her own problems.
Then, Gabby died.
Gabby died and Laura didn’t even know about it until after she was resurrected. With the law against clone resurrections, Laura had danced precariously close to losing her sister for good. After that, she had been better. Her time with the X-Men had ended and she had moved back into the Kinney Residence in the Akidemos Habitat on Krakoa. The two were in a good place, so when Gabby offered a picnic Laura had agreed even though she had never been the picnic type.
Dark boots trudge up the hill as Laura makes her way to the blanket. She’s come right from a meeting with Jubilee and Dazzler, and the hooded mask of her suit has been shoved back so her face is fully revealed. It would have been better with the weather to change first, but she hadn’t wanted to be late. At this point, it feels like she lives in uniform.
“Why does Jonathan have watermelon?” She asks, a slight smile pulling her lips upwards. It doesn’t really matter anyway. Laura angles her body to sit down, careful to keep her shoes off the blanket. There’s gotta be vampire blood or something on the bottom of them. “Girl talk. Really? We talk. We talk about Jonathan all the time. You got something secret to say?”
“Okay, well first off, why doesn’t Jonathan have watermelon any other time? Exactly, so you better just be happy I haven’t asked him to carry a watermelon everywhere we’ve gone, every year since we got him! I’ve been benevolent, but don’t make me regret that and turn into a beast of vengeance and spite!” Gabby quickly snapped back at her sister joining her with a much greater smile on her lips, her voice growing louder and with even more hammy energy before spiraling down into a fit of giggles as she leapt across the blanket to throw her arms around Laura! “I’m just messing with ya, sis! I just forgot the watermelon, and… Well, why do we just gotta talk about Jonathan?” She asked, her arms wrapped around the slightly older, less facially scarred, yet almost identical woman Gabby viewed as one of the best sisters she could ever ask for while pulling her into the perfect position to put her entire body weight against her. “He’s amazing, don’t get me wrong, but… What about you? Or, well, me more metal? Like, you’re so busy, we never get to chat about anything but the matter at hand! Is Jonathan on his leash? Are you keeping watch? Did you pack food? No, fruit snacks are not food! Which, by the way, they are. And, worst of all? I’m busy.” She added with a serious look on her face at the end, her serious and gruff impression of her sister melting into a tone of… Distance? A glimmer of worry that, if she doesn’t bring this up now, it might get worse like it had before? “So, you’re trapped here, Big Sis. No one knows where we are, Jonathan is off stealing a watermelon, and you’re stuck in my inescapable hug. No getting out, sorry, against the rules.” Gabby confirmed with a squeeze of her arms around her sister, one of the few people she was close enough to in size to do it to. “And, we’re going to talk about girl and sister things! Like, what you’ve been up to, why I can’t have grenades from Deadpool, why he’s a bad influence, and, uh… Boy talk? That last one I have no idea about whatsoever, and I need some help with, cause the website just said I’d know it and wasn’t helpful at all.”
