Welcome, and The Apiary
9th April 2015
This was originally set up a few weeks ago as a joint venture to document our love of food. It is primarily a means to note down the places we loved, like a food diary. Iâm sure it is obvious from this first post that no progress had been made since we originally came up with the idea. However, yesterday something happened that helped us grow stronger in our relationship together. It made me want to commemorate that. What better way than to start this diary/blog to celebrate our journey to becoming fatter? So today, Iâm posting about a restaurant that we visited on Monday for a long overdue date: The Apiary.
The Apiary means âa place in which a colony or colonies of bees are kept, as a stand or shed for beehivesâ. It seemed an apt restaurant to cover for a first post too given our blog name: Honeycomb-Tales. (As an aside, we came up with the name due to our skin tones: yellow and brown.) Weâve walked and bus-ed by this place on Newington Road several times, but never found our chance to go into this adorable restaurant until this sunny Monday. It had bee-themed wallpaper, with bee drawings and a crafted beehive on its menu board.Â
The Apiary offered a great lunch menu at ÂŁ9.50 for two courses, which included everything on the menu apart from the sides. We struggled to choose what to eat, but ultimately settled on two mains, two desserts and a side.
Mains: Slow braised blade of beef, chimichurri fried potatoes, greens, spicy tomato & red wine sauce and crème fraiche. We felt that the beef was a little dry, but overall tasted pretty good. However, we werenât a fan of how the sauce flavoured the pak choi, as it made it a bit too sour and did not fit the flavour of the vegetables.
Mains: Malaysian Mamak fried chicken burger, lime mayo & red slaw. The Malaysian (in one of us) liked the flavour but does not consider it fully authentic. That said, we really did enjoy this burger and the slaw. (Sorry the picture is only of the burger⌠it just drew me in!)
Desserts: Drunken pineapple mess and ice cream slider (2 flavours: heather honey, pink peppercorn & salted almonds and sticky date, cola & chilli). The drunken pineapple mess was so-so, especially as the pineapple was sour and the spread of the meringue insufficient to balance it out. The ice cream slider flavour was precisely as described, and I liked it overall. Though the peppercorn wasnât completely to my taste, I canât say itâs not what we ordered.
Sides: Pistachio & feta dip with corn chips. We really liked this, especially the hint of spiciness in the aftertaste. We would have preferred a more obvious pistachio taste, but you canât have it all.
The restaurant also provides a variety of seafood, vegetarian options, afternoon cake and smoothies. Their dishes are naturally gluten free, and those that are not can be adjusted to make it so. We like the fact it caters to people with different diets, nice food aesthetics, and think it has a lovely atmosphere for a date. We would definitely like to come back to try different dishes. The mains and the side order were definitely the highlight of the meal as the desserts were slightly disappointing, especially considering the quality of everything else. However, the service could not be faulted. The staff were helpful and friendly and just helped to transform a good meal into a special one.
Till the next restaurant time!
Love, A&F (weâre like models of the brand, but with a lot more flab)
