as much as I have issues with nocturne of recollection's characterization and the weird math going on (really? the incident happened 350 years, which would make Alucard older than his own mother?), the one thing I will always love is how much of a teenager Alucard and Maria are in it.

Alucard slept for 300 years presumably when he was 18 and it shows with how he behaved around Maria. He doesn't talk to her for the entire year he stays with her, let's his imp insult her, and is acting cold. It's undeniable that he is crushing on her, but instead of being mature and talking about it, he chooses to act distant and aloof.

Alucard never grew up into a proper adult vampire. He immediately stunted his maturity and mental state instead by going to sleep for 300 years. He robbed himself of gaining any life experience or worldly knowledge. He acts like a moody teenager because he is a teenager.

And this helps adds to Maria's character. I dislike the radio drama for stripping her powers to make her helpless, but the emotional beats she has with Alucard are good. She gets angry, she argues with him, and she gets emotional like any other young girl. She is an 18 year old teen girl dealing with being a hunter and in love. She is getting mixed signals from Alucard who keeps her at arms length, but shows hints that he wants to be close to her by letting her stay by his side.

Nocturne of Recollection is a teen drama. It's two teenagers struggling with their feelings and making mistakes along the way. They both don't have the necessary life experience when it comes to romance. They're clumsy and awkward and it's completely endearing when I remember that.

the one thing i found weird when netflixvania was running was videogame fans insisting that Alucard hated his former name and completely abandoned it because he really hated vampires and his father. The same Alucard who spent the next multiple centuries invoking his mother's memory hated the very name she gave to him and would leave it behind in the dust like nothing. There was moments when Alucard tells people to not call him Adrian and instead Alucard, but I always took it as him being dedicated to his mission in keeping his father dead. He can never go back to the name his mother, who he loved very much, ever again due to his sense of duty. I cannot in the million years see him hating the name that was given to him by his beloved mother who he continues to suffer heartbreak after heartbreak for.
