Qu Yuan was a popular Chinese official who threw himself into the Mi Lo River as a mark of protest against the corrupt rules. The local people of Hong Kong saved Qu Yuan by rowing boats in a rush. While rowing the boats, they scare away fishes and other sea creatures by drums. However, they failed to rescue the hapless Chinese official. They tried to calm the spirit of the deceased man by throwing glutinous rice dumplings or zongzi into the river.

Diverse Watercrafts

“A dragon boat is a human-powered watercraft originating from the Pearl River Delta region of China's southern Shanghai Province. These were made of teak, but in other parts of China, different kinds of wood are used.” However, the dragon boats participating in Tuen Ng Festival varies from each other in several aspects – style, size and number of crews.

Normally, the large dragon boats are designed in a conventional way just like massive war. The watercraft further have 20 to 80 crew members according to their sizes. Some of the dragon boats these days are operated by teams of women. Also, the dragon boats compete with a variety of traditional and new age human-powered watercraft.

Drummers and Support Crowd

Both drummers and support crowd boost the excitement and thrill of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival drastically. The drummers keep beating the drum continuously by sitting in the middle of the dragon boats. The crew keeps paddling according to the rhythms of the drums. At the same time, the spectators encourage the crew and make the event more exciting by cheering and banging cymbals as soon as the boat race starts.

Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival is one of the traditional festivals the keeps evolving with the passage of time. Many dragon boat races take place across Hong Kong during the Tuen Ng Festival. Meeting point will be at the corner of Nathan Road and Middle Road of the rear entrance of The Peninsula Hotel Hong Kong outside store “Ralph Lauren” for check in and will direct you onto the coach. Meeting time is at 7pm, if you could be there earlier please do and we will begin check in as early as 6:30pm.

Coach will lead to a harbour view private dining restaurant for dinner. The venue is at a wedding banquet hall, air conditioned and also open bar with beer, soft drinks, red wine and white wine. After dinner we will be boarding on boat to head out to secure our best location on the water in prepare for the fireworks.

By the end of our cruise, guests will be dropped off at the Causeway Bay typhoon shelter to disembark. Trains will be running all night for guests to get back to their hotels, taxis or Uber will also be available to hail. Expected disembarkation at 1am.

A Holiday trip to Macau

Situated on the south coast of china, Macau has most striking features. Macau is a blend of Portuguese and Chinese influence as it was traded by Portuguese and later handed back to China. It has separate identity of its own. Senado or Senate square, St. Paul’s cathedral, Monte Fort, Guia Fortress, Museum of Macau, A-Ma temple are some of the architectural attractions in Macau. One of the biggest casinos in the world is at Cotai Strip. There are many shows happening in the theatres of Casinos. The Senado Square: - Largo Do Sao Domingos and Avenida de Alemida both are connected making a triangle. It has many shops and restaurants surrounding the square. The lighting at night makes Senado Square more attractive. It is a part of the UNESCO historic centre of Macau world heritage site. Near about 3700 square meters is covered by this construction. Leal Senado stands in Sao Lourenco Macau china. It is a place where meetings and other conferences were held by Portuguese government. Exhibition hall is situated on the right part of the first floor and many exhibitions are held. The public meetings and conferences are held on the second floor. A public library containing around 18,500 books is on the first floor. The original walls of the building and its layout are worth seeing.

Ruining of St Paul’s cathedral: - It was well known facade destroyed by fire but the ruins are preserved in the Museum. It was originally a college and a church dedicated to Saint Paul apostle. It is listed as a historic centre. One can see intricate carving on the ruins that goes back to the 16th century under the supervision of architect Carlo Spinola.

A-Ma temple: - A 15th century temple located in Sao Lourenco Macau china and is one of the oldest one. It is a temple of Chinese sea goddess Mazu. The name “Macau” is believed to be derived from the temple’s name. It is a UNESCO world heritage site of Macau. Gate Pavilion, the memorial arch, the prayer hall, the hall of benevolence, hall of Guanyin, Zhengjiao Chanlin are parts of the temple.

Macau Tower: - It is located in Se Macau and is 1109 feet from the ground to the highest point. It is used for various activities like Sky jump, bungee jump which makes it highest commercial sky jump in the world. Not only for observation it is also used for telecommunications and broadcasting. It has observation areas, revolving restaurant, shops, theatres and many other entertainment activities.
