Prentiss first hear the Noise

I feel like the first settlers slowly acquiring the Noise would have been incredibly traumatic

It's not hard to imagine some people being unable to handle it, with a few potentially driven to suicide or violence as a result

Imagine spending over 20 years in the dead silence of the convey, only to suddenly gain the ability to hear every voice around you.

(Strictly speaking, this part is my own headcanon)

After the settlers landed, the Noise could begin appearing within a day or so. But Prentiss was someone who had spent twenty years working in the loneliness and silence of the convey. Every day, the only sound he could hear was the blood moving through his own veins. He was born aboard the ship and only knew the other caretakers from his vessel. If he had a closest friend, it was probably Elizabeth.

But as a woman, Elizabeth would never develop the Noise. She could only hear and see Prentiss's Noise. She couldn't understand why this was happening to him.

Prentiss only really knew her, so she was the only person he could turn to. Everything he said, and everything displayed in his Noise, amounted to the same thing: he was falling apart. He was overwhelmed by the sheer flood of information. It reminds me of the description in CW3:

The voice of the world surrounds him like the black beyond coming in to crush him under an impossible weight.

And Elizabeth could never truly empathize with what he was experiencing.

So he ask, "Why can't you empathize with me"

It wasn't really a question of why. It was a question of why she got to be spared it...

What are your headcanons for Davys mother? Do you think she was another caretaker like Prentiss or a regular settler. What do you think their relationship was like? I'd be interested hearing your thoughts on this cause I find the New Elizabeth era to be really interesting.

I was gonna write my headcanons about it in a fanfic but I never got around to it, I might format it in a bulletpointed list later if I get time

Chaos Walking stage production where every man character has 2-5 additional actors following him around and voicing his Noise. Sometimes the Noise actors gesture wildly. Sometimes the main actor has to quickly push a Noise actor behind him. Sometimes the Noise actors start grappling on stage, yelling at each other (shut up!). Sometimes the main actor is quiet and the Noise actor is monologuing. Sometimes they're both talking, but the main actor trails off and the Noise actor says the missing words. It's never quiet on stage. The lighting keeps some of the Noise actors in shadow, but the observant viewer notices what they're hiding.

the Noise actors act out memories, fantasies, reflections of what the main actor is seeing. Think about the comedic potential, the hidden details, the symbolism...

I'm picturing this kind of like a Deaf West Theatre production on steroids, where many characters have a main actor speaking in sign language and an additional one acting as their voice. So picture Todd followed by his five voices. Do you see the vision.

Todd's Noise #1: tired tired tired Todd's Noise #2: We've walked half the night, WHERE is the river? What if we took a seriously wrong turn? Todd's Noise #3: Can't do nothing about that cuz there ain't no turning back. Viola: Isn't any turning back Todd's Noise #1: *gasps* Todd: That's wrong on two counts. Todd's Noise #2: *puts his hands on his hips* Todd's Noise 3#: *holds up one finger* Todd: Number one, constantly reading people's Noise ain't gonna get you much welcome here. Viola, crossing her arms: And the second? Todd's Noise #3: *holds up two fingers* Todd & Todd's Noise #2: The second is I talk how I please.

Viola: Yes, that you do. Todd's Noises #1 and #2 start stepping toward Viola menacingly. Todd takes a deep breath, and Todd's Noise #3 pulls the other two back.

being trans in the chaos walking universe would suck I think because if your a trans man you lack noise which would make people thing ur weird and if your a trans women you would have noise which would also make people think your weird
