“The best way to gain a dragons trust is by feeding them.”

With the firebender’s knowledge of dragons he knew the ways of  getting a dragon to trust you quick and effectively. There were the best friend anyone could have when their trust was gained. 

“Plus we made the whole dragons eat people myth. Their diet mainly consists of fish and sometimes other dragons. Some even eat molten lava or rocks. It all depends on the dragon.”

Each one was unique just like the people that lived here. And he was positive they could even find a dragon for the prince. But it would take a lot of patience and time.

❝ I see... ❞ Zuko considered the thought, rubbing at his chin before ultimately nodding his head in affirmation. He supposed it very well could be a lie since there was rarely any man in the Fire Nation who drew the ire of a dragon and lived to tell the tale anyway.

❝ You really won’t find that written in any texts in Caldera City but then it’s not like I’ve read every single book on dragons. Most of my studies were very structured growing up and there was little room to wander or seek out things like HOBBIES between schooling and training with my masters.

“Not true,” she said simply, plopping down next to Zuko where he still dripped from the dumping of cold water. The droplets caught the light in places, glinting before falling to the darkened sand underneath him.

“Besides, we haven’t spent much time together since you came back. I thought it would be nice to have some quality time while Ty Lee helps Mai with the sand in her swimsuit.” She tossed her hair, leaning back against her hands, ankles crossed as the princess basked in the sunlight. 

With a deep breath she felt the swell and rise of her firebending before it settled back within her as she let the breath out between her lips. 

“Unless you’d rather leave things as they’ve been the last four years while you were away?”

Golden eyes narrowed suspiciously as Zuko watched Azula sit next to him. He knew better than to take anything his sister did at face value, he’s had YEARS to learn that lesson all through his life. Azula always had something up her sleeve even if she weren’t wearing any at present.

At some point though Zuko knew he’d have to give up the active glaring and huffed as gaze was drawn back out toward the ocean. As much as he’d like to push his sopping bangs out of his face that just wasn’t something he’d do- NOT HERE where everyone could see the mark of dishonor so prominently displayed on his face.

❝ While I was AWAY? You almost make it sound like I had a choice in the matter. ❞ Or that he’d had a choice outside of considering his own sister an enemy during the time he was EXILED and made a refugee in the Earth Kingdom.

He also didn’t mention speaking to them. He would make sure to clearly translate the prince’s intentions so they didn’t think he was a threat to them. The month was so close to their egg laying schedule it was going to be busier than ever on the small island. 

With people all over the nations seeking a safe haven like the dragons it was apparent they were starting to run out of space.

But those problems didn’t seem to matter now with the prince wanting to make his pact with the dragons and he hoped he’d be  one of the few who would keep their word as well. 

“Why don’t we go now? Most of the dragons will be in the stables by now since its close to feeding time.”

❝ I’d really like that. ❞ Zuko answered at first, a pause before continuing much  more UNSURE of himself than before. It was a trait entirely unbecoming of Fire Nation royalty but a trait Zuko found hard to rid himself of for a while now.

❝ That is, if I’m not intruding at all. If the dragons are busy I’d just as gladly wait on them to be ready to accept me. I am not here to disrespect your dragons in any way and I’d hate to further insult them when they’ve been insulted enough by my people and MY FAMILY in particular.

❝ By all of that of course I mean to ask if they might try to EAT ME if it’s close to their feeding time and they haven’t eaten yet? ❞

Hiccup had a rare talent. Being a fire bender he connected quicker with his dragon. He could speak with them as well.  So when he spoke to Zuko he spoke for all of them. For their voices were lost to those who could not hear them. 

“If you’d like while you’re here….perhaps you can try and mend the broken bond with the dragons. Seeing as you’re going to be Fire Lord one day…it’ll help them knowing they have an ally in the fire nation. A lot of the dragons here had to abandon their home and seek safety.”

While Zuko had the whole nation thing Hiccup would be Chief of this whole island. He didn’t want to be but it would happen. But he wanted to help the dragons return to their routines. Their migration patterns and where the went to lay their eggs.

❝ Mending the Fire Nation’s bond with the dragons is definitely something I’d like to do. I would just have to figure out how to do that which wouldn’t put your island in danger or the dragons on it. I’d hate to have a repeat of history because even if I said hunting dragons would have MAJOR CONSEQUENCES there would always be people who’d still try with wanting to feel superior to the original Firebenders. ❞

It was easy for this conversation to take a rather MELANCHOLY turn, thinking about their shared nation’s past transgressions and how much their people had to make up for. Though, Zuko did perk up a bit at the mention of gettng to meet the dragons himself. He was never going to assume that was possible, understanding entirely if he were left a little untrusted by this boy, yet here the offer stood and WHO WAS ZUKO TO REFUSE?

❝ I would be HONORED to personally meet with your dragons so that I could tell them face to face that I do want to do everything I can to keep them safe so they can return to wherever they want to live in the world. Dragons should never be forced to live in FEAR, they deserve so much better. ❞
