June/Cora | The Devil’s Carnival: Alleluia
“Maybe I just want you to come and rescue me from my evil ways.”
wick on We Heart It.
One of the strangest movies, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Ivan Moody In The Devils Carnival.
whereisyourheavenhiding:
The return of the tent’s inhabitant goes unnoticed for a moment as the man basks in the warm glow of his hard won victory. Soon enough the lighthearted giddiness of finally finding what he sought seeps from his bones, leaving only the feeling of being watched. Knowing he was caught, the Twin turns and, while still holding the club to him as though it’s proper owner would snatch it away at any moment, he fished out his flask. He takes a swig and feels the warm giddiness start again in the pit of his stomach, spreading outwards. So not from his success then.
Doll had a rather blank stare on her face, and the Twin felt a slight twinge of agitation at that. The man could never tell what was on her mind unless she chose to share it with him, and while it did make imitating her easier he had always been a little bitter that he couldn’t figure out the inner workings of her mind in the same way he could everyone else’s. That agitation passed quickly, as it always does, and he rose to his feet, holding his hands, and by extension his stolen treasure, out to Doll.
“This looks bad,” The Twin states, pausing to try and gauge Doll’s reaction. “It was for good reason.” He offers no further explanation, only begins to walk back towards the exit. He dips mid step once he passes her by a few strides, grabbing at a handful of small metal balls (chinese health balls, he thinks) and turning the action into a low sweeping bow, motioning for her to lead out of her home.
This looks bad.
Doll’s eyebrows rise, her gaze levels to the Twin’s and locks there, staring. It certainly does. Somehow she doubts that good reason he insists on is going to be particularly convincing--if he ever happens to share it with her at all.
So she remains motionless as he passes her, only her pale face turning to keep those unblinking eyes trained on him in reproach. There’s no reason to stop him herself; now that she knows he’s here she can hold him in the twisting passages of her tent as long as she pleases. Instead, a plywood facade clatters to its side just inches from the Twin’s nose, a pair of baby carriages roll over it, and all at once the pathway fades from existence before him.
Then does the Painted Doll stalk forward, slip between her visitor and the brand new barrier in his path. There is something unsettling in the perfect civility of her features, something in the wide eyes and pursed lips that doesn’t quite add up. It might, possibly, be the hair’s breadth of distance between that pleasant visage and the Twin’s own, or the sinister downward cant of her chin.
With a palm on each shoulder she pushes him, back and back and back, until his coat brushes the canvas wall and sunlight sprays down over their heads. Drawing herself up to full height, Doll smiles primly, angles a meaningful glance toward toward the tear, and squeezes tight with her fingers.

The sounds of the carnival, already a distant din by the time the Twin makes his way to Doll’s tent, become nearly unnoticeable once he passes through the entryway. The man tilts his head, listening for the owner of the place and after a moment he becomes satisfied and sets to work. He digs through piles of junk, searches through countless trunks filled to the brim with discarded costumes and stolen jewelry from the carnival’s guests, pulls apart wooden set pieces stacked precariously against one another to search between them, and still he fails to find what he knows is hidden away in one of these piles.
By the time he had searched through half of the possible hiding spots he had left the place looking like a tornado had torn through it, not that it was terribly tidy to begin with, and there was next to no chance that he would be getting away with his little search undiscovered. Never mind that though, it wouldn’t matter if he could just find that damned thing already. Growing agitated the Twin begins to pace, trying to think of a better way to find what he’s looking for than just “tear shit up and hope for the best”. Right when he was about to give up hope of finding it on his own the shine of a bauble resting in the sun caught his attention and his gaze rose to follow the beam of sunlight to it’s source, a small tear in the canvas of the tent. Oh, Doll is not going to be happy about that. But when his eyes land on the long handle of the golf club caught in the fabric a grin overtook his face. The Twin crossed the distance in a few large strides, reaching up to grasp the handle and yank the thing out, tearing the fabric just a tiny bit more in the process. His satisfaction was to be short lived though, as Doll would likely skin him alive for what he did to her home.
On her first dainty step through her own tent flap, the Painted Doll discovers a soft black glove at her feet. On the second, the glossy toe of her boot prods a fat old almanac; the third is obstructed wholly by the crumpled mess of some carnie’s lace-and-motley tutu resting in the straw. As she walks each footfall is matched by a thin trickle of her personal belongings: toys, jewelry boxes, battered foam wig heads, each in turn tossed to the dirt. Discarded, apparently, by some guest with an agenda.
The occurrence isn’t wholly unusual. Wick and the girls make as much a home of her tent as she does; it wouldn’t be the first time one of them whirled through her things seeking some article or other. Doll isn’t exactly organized, she’ll be the first to admit.
But something is off, here.
Perhaps it’s the content of the debris, maybe it’s the sheer volume of it; her telltale visitor doesn’t know where to look, they’re just... looking. They’ve picked through every bowl and cabinet, every shelf and crevice, and their path leads nowhere but deeper into the maze. The Woe-Maidens would at least have guessed to try a bit closer to her bedroom, if they wanted anything of value.
So Doll ventures deeper, letting the destruction guide her feet. The intruder couldn’t have gotten far, with a mess this big, she suspects--ah.
Before her lies the Twin, a golf club, and a rather sizable tear in the side of her tent. Pausing just at the edge of the little clearing in the junk, the Painted Doll stands poised, waiting for the man to turn. Head cocked, face blank, any of a thousand emotions could be seizing her at this specific moment, and he would be none the wiser.

A war between heaven and hell...
She had to admit, the idea was entrancing. A chance to storm that fine and pearly parlor, to smash the flagstones, to grab the divine Pretender Himself by the balls. A chance to see her dearest Cora again--if only for just a moment. The Painted Doll would love nothing better than to show the whole immaculate production exactly what she was made of.
The sorry show before her now could hardly be named a war. The poor Sevens that strayed by God’s own word onto Lucifer’s doorstep didn’t stand a chance. Away from their effulgent home, clinging on desperately to weapons they couldn’t possibly fathom the purpose of--though, Doll had to admit, significantly more powerful than Hell’s own--it would be only a matter of moments before they were all obliterated by the swarming mass of demons all around them.
Still, chances were at least one of the unfortunate lot would make it to the stable door before a carnie could cut them in half, and she simply could not let the position of Hell’s newest permanent guest be compromised. Too much rode on the man, pardoning the pun.
So, as the elevator doors pinged shut outside, Doll slipped backwards off the Agent’s back, into the seat that just moments previously had contained him. With a sharp twist of her hips her legs were free of him, and she stood, pulling him up with her by the glossy black shoulders of his coat. Perfectly poised, an iron grip locked on either side of his neck, the woman waited for the poisoned man to get his balance.
She had no illusions; an hour, maybe two, and her former lover would be back to his full, glorious strength. She had to make sure the Agent was good and secure before he could do more than retch.
