This week was the semi-final and therefore it is understandable that we were feeling connected with the remaining 4 contestants. Whoever went this week was going to feel like a loss. Don’t get me wrong, Selasi was the right choice to leave the tent, but he is such a lovable character, that I can’t help but feel sad that he wont be in the final.
The contestants really struggled with patisserie week. Fondant fancies aren’t easy at home, but under pressure in a tent it isn’t surprising they were all somewhat ‘informal’.
I was fascinated by the Savarin. I hadn’t heard of it before and the idea of a half cake, half bread creation soaked in zesty, boozy, syrup sounded too good not to try at home.
As I hadn’t made one before or was even sure what they taste like, I decided to use Paul Hollywoods recipe via the Beeb and not try to experiment with flavours this week.
The smell of this cake when tipped out of the pan, still hot from the oven, was divine. So much better than I imagined. After 2 and a half hours of prepping, proving and baking, I was so happy when I turned it out and it was golden and well…in one piece.
Whilst the Savarin was soaking up the syrup, I prepped the caramel shards.
…and the chocolate tag…I forgot to buy chocolate, so i had to melt down some of the children’s chocolate buttons to make this…shhh don’t tell them and I promise to give them a big slice of cake later.
The children were desperate to help me decorate the cake… I can pretty much guarantee that no contestant from GBBO16 has ever had to contend with three sugar high children..”helping’ so enthusiastically that they had to stop and mop the kitchen floor half way through decorating……
I was really happy with how my Savarin came out. The syrup soaked all the way through the cake, and although I needed to omit the liquor from my version so the children could eat it, it was still really zesty and light.
The sweetness of the Chantilly cream, mixed with the sharp fresh fruit was a delicious combination.
…Right I am off to make a nice cup of tea and enjoy a large slice of cake. Next week is the FINAL!
