Did you know the little alien sitting inside the guy's head in MEN IN BLACK was both a tiny puppet and a huge, intricately detailed full size one for the close ups?

Doubtless most of my fellow PHMmies have already seen this, but in case you haven't, here is Mythbuster Adam Savage and the costume designers from PHM, Glyn Dillon and David Crossman, discussing the red EVA suit.
Besides some lovely images of the suit and details, they also mention things like how the mission patch had to get legal clearance to show national flags, and what the fictional aerospace company names in the film come from.
I'm bored, so let's talk about the difference between matte paintings and green screens.
For several decades Hollywood used a technique of painting backgrounds on glass sheets and then juxtaposing them with the actual shot filmed.
Matte paintings are the most obvious way of knowing you are watching an old film. When CGI became the standard in Hollywood, matte paintings were basically replaced by green screens, which can be considered almost an evolution of this technique in a way.
Matte Paintings are better than green screens in every single way imaginable.
Matte paintings give a film texture, if that makes sense. Even when it's obvious that it's a matte painting, it is still incredibly satisfying for me visually. They transform film shots into true living paintings.
I always questioned myself, for example, why Ghostbusters 2, a film that usually is not as liked as the first one, is so visually pleasing to me. And the answer is obvious,. because they still relied on matte paintings instead of green screens.
Even the worst matte effect is still better than a good green screen.
