A Week at the Viva la Vida Apartments
āHey Brian!ā The cheerful, energetic voice jolts Brian awake from his dozing. Brian is sitting on a park bench in the middle of a beautifully forested park. A young man approaches him.
āHey Chris.ā Brian says covering a yawning and waving sheepishly.
Brian quickly checks on Elen, his 10 month old baby, peaking into the stroller next to him.
āYou look very tired. You doing ok?ā Chris asks Brian as he sits down next to him.
āAh, so - so I guess. Little Elen has been keeping me and Helen up all night. Iām so glad Iām not working right now. Iād be so blasted if I was at work. That wouldnāt be good for anyone.ā
āIām sure your coworkers would totally enjoy you driving big construction vehicles while being excessively sleep deprived. Nothing could go wrong.ā Chris says in his typical cheerfully sarcastic way.
āHa. That would be a big safety violation.ā Brian says, smiling at Chris' joke.
āIām supper grateful for the year paid leave. With a newborn and a 6 year old running around itās been hectic. Wait, Connor's 7 now. Gosh... Anyway, it's been hectic, youāve heard the meltdowns theyāve had. Living next door to us and all." Brian says.
āOh, gosh, I'm just remembering the night before finals week when everyone in my apartment had early morning finals. So glad that's over and it's summer now." Chris says laughing at the memory.
Chris and Brian sit in silence, lost in thought each are contemplating and processing their own thing. Enjoying their time in the beautiful public park spanning out before them. They are currently in a densely wooded area with a gated playground for young kids off to the side.
Elen makes an adorable cooing noise. The two men are drawn to the sound. Chris is amazed how babies have the power to be such annoyances and immediately make you feel happy and protective.
āYes, howād you get here before I did? I just got here and I thought we left the apartment around the same time...ā Brian says, puzzled.
āOh, I took para-transit. Then I walked from the library to here. Itās not that far.ā
āOk, nice. I was just wondering if I was slowed down by how tired I am. The walk didnāt seem that long for me.ā
āYeah, it isnāt. I just get tired if I walk there and back. Though most of the time Iām fine wandering around the park.ā
āFeeling up to taking a walk with me? Iām going to take the scenic route through the park to head back to the apartments. I think they ā we, need a nap.ā Brian gestures from Elen to himself.
āSure. A walk sounds lovely.ā Chris says.
So, the two men get up, Chris grabs his cane, Brian lifts the breaks on Elenās stroller, and the three head off into the park.
