There’s the sound of laughter that comes from her, soft giggles as she watches the water’s current residents— some fish and a handful of birds. 

( Ah, but soon the fish will... hydrate? No, that’s not it, but she can’t quite put her finger on what’s the actual word she’s thinking of; but that’s besides the point. Soon, it’ll be time for the fish to hide and the birds will probably leave for the winter— freedom, she supposes, that she envies )

That’s a real downer to think about, so she doesn’t— she opts to watch a nearby stranger, fishing... well, she means to just watch, but as things usually go with her, she doesn’t manage to stay quiet for very long. “Is... is it fun? The fishing, I mean— it’s always seemed kinda hard to me!”

The metallic gleam is what catches her eyes first ( little bird, too curious, too easy to distract with the smallest of things ) — daring little thing she is, of course, means she has to see the source. Well, has to is debatable, but it is a necessity in her book, at least. 

Lips form a small ‘o’ shape, a soft noise of awe; even when she has no clue about what she’s looking at, she is easily impressed, nonetheless. “What’s this thing do, ‘nyways?”

There’s a soft chitter in her throat, a sweet noise that reverberates for a moment— cheery little smile on her face. “Huh? Wha... What d’ya mean you’ve never heard of it before?” Her lips tug into a small pout, just briefly, before her smile’s back again with an enthusiastic wave of her hands. “Alright then, I guess I’ll have to help you, then!” That’s what friends do for each other ( she thinks, anyhow ).

There’s a small furrow of her brows, confusion seeping into her expression ( though, to be fair, that is perhaps not that uncommon of a look for her; it is hard keeping up with humans sometimes ). “I....” She starts and stops, a small huff of frustration escaping her lips. “I don’t get what you’re saying. I-Is it something I said...? ‘Cause... I really did mean that apology sincerely.” Ah yes, her impeccable talent of putting her foot in her mouth has preceded her— though really, she thinks it’s maybe not her fault for once ( misunderstandings are always possible! Or, ah, much more likely with her, perhaps ).

“You’re a dancer huh? I’ve heard it takes a lot of hard work to do that.” Even as nasty as Mal was, the fae couldn’t help but be reminded of Dizzy as she looked at the much smaller teen. And for that, she would give her rare kindness.

Her gaze is fixated on the girl’s hair— lovely, a few shades lighter and she thinks she’d probably be more reminded of Pique, but that’s probably besides the point— when she realizes she’s being spoken to, fingers grasping at the slippers in her hands. “Mhm! I am, a-and it’s pretty hard, but the effort’s worth it, I think, even though I’m not really that good...”

     elias forgets how perceptive children are.      they notice everything and nothing at the same time.       he needed to watch himself to avoid upsetting her, as he doubts making a child cry would be the way he wants to end his day. if anything, it would ruin it, and then chise would want to hear all about it… and she’d probably be upset with him.      ❝ yes, like the ugly duckling story that you humans enjoy passing around.      but the ending of that story is a tad different– doesn’t the ugly ducking turn into a beautiful swan who is loved by everyone ? ❞      … really, he’s only heard the story a handful of times throughout his long life. but he’s familiar with it, and what the story itself is meant to convey.

     ❝ yes, she is right. i find it interesting how some humans dictate that others must conform to the social rules that are set… while others embrace those who ignore the rules.      peculiar.      it seems like every mortal i’ve come across has some sort of wisdom to bestow me. ❞      oh. she’d heard him say that… and didn’t understand ?      the magus momentarily wishes that his face wasn’t set in non-moving bone, his jaw parting as his mind buffers, a response not found as fast as he’d of liked.      ❝ er… chise is my fiancée. we are to be wed. that is what i mean by ‘ wife to be ‘, child. ❞ 

Had she been sitting, or at some other kind of surface, Ahiru thinks her hands would’ve slammed against it in her enthusiasm ( albeit somewhat melancholic, her energy is, but present nonetheless is ). “But that’s the thing! The ugly duckling wasn’t a duckling, but everyone else judged it because that’s what they thought it was! S-So... even though everyone likes the swan for being a swan... everyone also hated the swan for being a swan. Do you get what I mean?” A pause, before the small pout on her lips turn back up in a small smile. “B-But that wouldn’t ever actually happen in real life... I don’t think birds would actually make a mistake like that.”

“Mhm! It’s really peculiar, but that’s just part of what makes humans so diverse! It’s a little troublesome, I guess, but... they make it work, I think?” A small titter, she can’t help but agree with that sentiment— humans are odd, but perhaps not as much as they think. “That’s ‘cause there’s always more to learn— so I’m told, and I th-think that’s true... although I think that was probably about my lessons, not life itself, but it still counts!” She beams with a wide, toothy grin ( wisdom, she brushes over that thought fairly quickly— that is not something she would apply to herself, though she will admit there’s plenty to learn from everyone, if one was willing to learn ). “Oh! That... that makes sense, yeah! Haha... I’m not used to hearing that kind of wording.”

❝ Right then!❞

With a bit of a skip in his step, Tsurumaru began leading them to their first destination to look. It would be too obvious to start with the places Mikazuki normally frequented, so they would have to start with the main island, working their way to Beaulieu before it got dark. He’d hate to keep her away from home then, after all. The blade hummed, head tilted to the sky in faux thought as they walked.  ❝ I’m pretty unfamiliar with human customs.❞ It was the half-truth.  ❝ Ahiru-bou, where do you think we should start first?❞ he asked, eyes turning their attention to the girl  with a smile - a bit curious as to where she would pick. 

In it’s own way, it was fascinating having a human body. He could speak and do many other things he couldn’t as a sword, including interacting with this small girl. Of course it came with it’s burdens, seeing as Tsurumaru still felt tied to his long-standing fate as a sword and actually being able to experience centuries worth of emotions. Well, he can’t be bothered with that now, he had a saviour to find. Maybe after revealing his actual identity as a sword once they find his old friend, maybe he could treat her to ice cream or something.

She is quick to follow his lead with a scurry of footsteps, with her short stature used to having to keep up with those much taller than she. It reminds her of a time that feels like a distant memory, her and a boy on a search for a prince ( him and him and her, three people that are tucked near and dear to her, even if only in memory— and perhaps only that, when they are worlds away from her now ). A time like now, when— ah, on second thought, it is better if she does not spend too much time lingering on such thoughts; lest she upset herself ( no, it’d do no good for her to start crying now! There are more important issues at hand, and better times to let herself divulge in her feelings ).

“I don’t really know either— I mean, humans are all very different, it’s not fair to clump ‘em all together.” She speaks without thinking, and is quick to amend that ( it holds true though, none of the ‘humans’ that she knows are all the same ). “Did... he happen to ever mention anythin’ that might be useful? Like, things he liked to do? The city is really big!” A statement emphasized by a motion of her arms waving about— though, to be fair, much is big when you are a small bird, and the only town you have known is a small place once closed away from reality. “ ‘Cause, if it was one of my friends, I would start by checking places that I know they might be, you know? But, if you don’t really know anything, tha’s okay! We should check places that people have to go— like, to get groceries— or uhm... uh, maybe somewhere really busy. It’d take too long to check every place individually, right?” A brief pause, frowning. “But oh... I guess people have to work, huh? So that might not work out to well... plus, there’s always the chance we might miss him, isn’ there?” A seemingly hopeless task, but she doesn’t seem to be deterred at all— she will always continue to hold onto hope, no matter what.

     ❝ no, it’s not nice. ❞      his answer is short, yet straight to the point…. but it also shows just how much the mage struggles when it comes to interacting with YOUNGER mortals.

     ❝ it–… ❞      he wants to be honest, to say that YES, it was rude and she should be sorry… but instead, elias merely halts his sentence and allows his slightly parted jaws to ( quietly ) click shut.      if she were here, he believes chise would be PROUD of him. proud for being nice– for displaying ‘ good ‘ and ‘ kind ‘ qualities.      the way the child’s emotions sway from cheerful to distraught, and then back again are slightly alarming for the old magus ( who already struggled with understanding human emotions in the first place ). he does his best to keep up, taking extra care ( for ONCE ) to avoid hurting her feelings or worse, making her CRY even.      ❝ uniqueness is not a bad thing. but. to some individuals, being different is a cause for them to treat you differently as well. usually in an unfair manner. they punish you for not conforming to them. my wife-to-be has said that being different is ‘ good ‘ and that unique people are what make life fun and worth living, something about learning others’ perspectives and such. ❞

She is used to dealing with short, blunt conversation, people who don’t like to talk much— though, for the most part, it is really she who talks too much in comparison. It is comforting to have her thoughts confirmed, at least ( even if it,is a strangers opinion, something that not everyone would care for ).

There’s a small cock of her head, curiously, when he stops himself short ( another thing she is used to, though she’s figured out that it’s usually it is out of frustration when it comes to things she doesn’t understand ). Given how ‘rude’ she’s been, however, she opts not to inquire what he was going to say; it is perhaps best for her not to know. A soft sniff, a nod of agreement— as if she didn’t know that very well herself! “Like an ugly duckling...” Ah, her best metaphors are spoken in the ( few ) stories that she knows, a quiet mumble before she’s back to her normal bubbliness. “She’s right! Because people that are different aren’ bad, and humans are all really different. That’s what makes them so... them! Even if they’re ‘wrong’ or ‘bad’, there’s still something worthwhile to learn from them. It’s all just a matter of perspective!” A pause, a furrow in her brows. “Uhm... what do you mean by wife-to-be, anyways?”

( To a stranger, it must be astounding how she can go from speaking with as much wisdom as a child can offer— and in the same breath, be caught on some trivial, off hand comment )

“Ehh? No! Don’t say that! Everyone is amazin’ in their own way. And I think bein’ able to talk to birds is pretty extraordinary! It’s something that makes you unique, and you should be proud of that.”

“Ah, yeah, I wish I could fly, too.” Which was more than a passing remark, not that she’d understand that. He literally did have wings, not that he was able to use them. At most he could manage a lopsided glide. “Okay, hold out your hand,” he says, opening up the bag of birdseed. “What birds are your favorites? I like macaws. But toucans are fun, too! And chickadees are very cute, but I got bit by one once and it wouldn’t let go.”

“Er—” She’s conflicted, truly; the truth isn’t something she can say so easily, so she’ll accept it with a sheepish smile. “I guess if you say so, it is. It’s not really that special, honestly... not like being good at dancin’ or fighting.... or making stories come to life! There are way more talented people out there, I think.” Though, in retrospect, she really doesn’t want to be good at fighting, so, maybe that one really doesn’t count. She, at least by ( her ) human standards, is probably pretty normal— then again, her idea of talent comes mostly from people she idolizes, so if she were to really think about it ( which she doesn’t ), there’s some bias there.

“Lot’s of people would like to, I hear— it’s fun! Er, in theory, I think. It’s probably not that much more exciting than like... being able to swim and dive, you know!” She’s hasty to cover up her slip up ( however small it may be, she has to correct herself, out of habit ). Eagerly, she cups her hands and holds them out, a soft chitter while she waits. “Oooh, uhm, swans are really pretty and elegant, b-but I think they’re supposed to be kinda mean, and doves sound kinda nice... there was a nest of canaries at the school I was at! And uh, all the little sparrows and such are also really fun. But, I like everyone a lot because picking favorites are hard and that’s not fair! Like, most people don’ really like crows, right? So I wanna like them extra to make up for it!”

Blinking down at the girl, Tsurumaru was just about to comfort the girl when she was suddenly tearing up with his usual konpeito magic trick ( that one usually went well with Sada-bou and the other tantous to cheer them up, but to his luck although he’s ran into very few children in this city, he kept it on hand for adults as well ) before chuckling, a bit endeared by this earnest little one. He didn’t usually strive to move people so much; it simply was a reality Tsurumaru accepted the moment he was taken from his place of eternal rest. He never cried once, certainly not expecting others to cry for him.

❝ Wah ahaha! Ahahahahahaha!❞ Tsurumaru couldn’t help but to laugh at her promise. Well, it was moreso at himself, hoping she’d keep it even after finding out he’s less of a bird and more of a sword. The tachi could truly see no merit in befriending a blade the day he becomes the Tsurumaru Kuninaga once more, an inanimate object; a mere tool. Still, the thought was nice. Even swords became lonely in their cases, after all.

The old blade paused in his steps, kneeling down to eye level. A crane and a duck, what a surprising friendship. Tsurumaru didn’t quite understand human relationships just yet, sometimes swords used their respective schools of smiths or former masters to form familial bonds, but even despite only knowing her a short while and learning her name just now, there was the fleeting thought that if Ahiru would be family, she would be something akin to a daughter to him.  ❝ Ahiru-bou, the one we’re looking for is clad in blue, and if you look  closely,❞ he points to one of his own eyes.  ❝ I remember that he had eyes with little crescent moons in them. Think he’ll be easy to spot?❞ he asked, kneeling back up.  

Since he was supposed to be a crane now, Tsurumaru thought he should properly ask to be Ahiru’s friend after revealing that he’s actually a sword.

If there is something she could consider herself ‘good’ with, it is an endless amount of empathy— no, perhaps, it is that she is too empathetic, reads too far into things called feelings. But, it is the quality that makes her the most ‘human’, she would suppose, more than any human body could. Regardless, she has little qualms when it comes to showing emotions— be herself, wasn’t that was she was supposed to do, even in a place she didn’t know? Tears are as genuine as any emotion she feels, though they are quickly wiped away with the flutter of her lashes ( this was not the time to be upset! This was a time she should be happy, she’s meeting someone new! )

She pouts a little at the sound of his laughter; if only because she thinks she’s not being taken very seriously ( and she is pretty serious about making a promise like that! )— of course, if she knew better, well... she’d probably be a bit more understanding. Her sulky expression doesn’t linger too long, though, this isn’t a matter that calls for letting herself be upset for too long, and besides, there are more important matters at hand!

She peers up when he ducks down, most do not bother to try and be on level with her ( which, in all honestly, isn’t a thought that usually occurs to her, but it’s kind of comforting, in a way— like it strikes her as being close to equal ). The suffix added onto her name isn’t something she’s familiar with, but the way he speaks makes her think it doesn’t mean anything bad— but she doesn’t get much time to really think about what it might mean. Her brows wrinkle a little bit, it sounds awfully specific to her which means, no, such a small detail would make things harder, wouldn’t it? But, she’s ever the hopeful optimist that, somehow, it’d be an easy job, so she replies positively with a nod. “Mhm! If we’re both looking, then I bet he’ll be really easy to find!”

Children certainly were energetic, weren’t they. Although it’s been thousands of years and he could hardly remember them aside from the battles they died at while wielding him, up until seeing the tantous given life as children he could only ever recall them shedding blood or sacrificing for the sake of honor and their parents, even if he was aware he has only really seen the nobility side of things. It brought up much fonder memories to see children, well, act as children. 

❝ There could be. It’s comforting to blame the gods for things, but really it’s angry or sorrowful spirits that bring calamity to people.❞ he replied, not really considering if that would frighten the girl. It was what he learned in his long lifetime, at least. Then again, she began to ask some frightfully insightful questions, even if the tachi doubted she was aware how much they were. ❝ I guess when I do properly express my gratitude in some way it could mean I would go back to being a crane. It would be best if I don’t get attached to this gift in that case, so I won’t.❞ he hummed. 

It was best to believe that, anyways. 

Although he reveled in the uncertainties of life, they also made him anxious. He could be free now, but there was the daunting fear he would catch another master’s eye and be snatched away from a life he began to grow accustomed to, and with this human heart he gained, none of the laughter in this world could save him again. Well, anxious as he may be, he was going to cross those bridges when he got there. It was too bothersome to dwell in it and he had grand surprises to see through. 

❝ Wahaha! What positivity you have! My name is Tsurumaru, but you could call me Tsuru-san or just plain Tsuru if you’d like. And you? Plus… you should probably know who exactly I’m looking for looks like or it might be difficult for you to help search, no?❞

Child, she is, and though she can channel the wise grace of Princess Tutu that she once possessed, it is much simpler to live out like the child she is ( at the very least, it is what she deserves ). Naive, perhaps, but it is true to herself— and that is what is important, Ahiru thinks, that’s a lesson she’s learned; to be herself, however that may be.  

There’s a small flinch at the mention of spirits— how scary!— but it is easy to remind herself that not all spirits were bad, and some of them were just a bit misunderstood; with that thought in mind, she decides it’s easier to not think about it too much, and doesn’t. “That’s not fair. Gods have feelings too, I bet.” And here she is, sulking; concerned with the feelings of god ( most people would think gods were above that, but she is not human, so perhaps it is natural that she is considered over such matters ).

Brows furrow, struggling with what to say for a moment; she does not usually struggle with words, expressing her feelings ( then again, right now she seems like she might start tearing up, so her struggle is fairly justified ). “W-Well, it’s okay to get attached if you want to, there’s nothin’ wrong with that! And.... and I’ll be your friend even after you go back to being a bird, mister crane. So you won’t be lonely or anything, promise!” Ah, she is projecting a bit, perhaps, considering many would not start to think if a bird would be lonely; but her intentions are sincere ( at the very least, the proclamation of friendship to a near stranger proves she’s still feeling like herself ). 

Positive! Not the word that comes to mind first for many people when referring to her, but one Ahiru liked all the same. “Thank you! It’s ‘cause I’m very...” Pause, a brief look of concentration— what was the word again...? On second thought, maybe words weren’t her strong suit after all. “... hopeful! I’m told I’m really hopeful, and I think they’re right— hope they’re right, ‘nyways.” If possible, her smile grows, beaming brightly towards the other. “Tsuru-san! My name is Ahiru, ‘ts nice to meet you!” She trails off in a sheepish titter, scratching at her cheek. “Suppose you’re right about that. So, uhm... what’s this person look like?”
