Double Gooch - Imperial International Pale Ale - Devil's Backbone & Fat Heads Brewery This beer has an understated grassy, herbal aroma. The flavor is a mix of grassy and grapefruit hops. The malt is balanced and backs the hops well. I would not expect to like this one, but it really grew on me. 6/10
The Devil Went Down to Oregon - Imperial Rye IPA - Devil's Backbone & Ninkasi Brewing This beer had a surprisingly earthy, old world hop aroma. This gives way to a very nice rye bite paired with a solid hop profile. This is a nice warming rye IPA--certainly not the west cost style I was expecting from this collaboration. Not my favorite Rye IPA, but a good beer. 6/10
Uinta Brewing - Monkshine Belgian Style Blonde Nothing like good beer in a plastic cup! Here in rural Utah, it's Utah beers or nothing, but I'm not complaining. Classic banana and spice aroma with a hint of anise. The flavor intensifies the anise and has a smooth lingering finish. Belgians aren't my typical choice, but this beer could change my mind. 7/10
Squatters - Hop Rising Double IPA The IPA was delicious. Why not double down? The aroma on this beer is an earthier version of the IPA. There's a bit of fruitiness here, but this beer is focused on the hops. The double IPA moves a lot of the hops into the flavor, more than the aroma. This is a very smooth double IPA, but I am just not a huge fan of the resulting flavor. It's obviously a great beer...just not one of my personal favorites. 7/10
Squatters - Off Duty IPA I'm passing through Salt Lake City airport with a few hours to kill this evening, so the Squatters pub seemed like a good idea. The off duty IPA was recommended as "one of the best IPAs you will ever taste." I'm listening... The beer has a nice American IPA aroma of tropical fruit. The flavor adds a complex hop body, with hints of pine and citrus. The malt balances the hops with a touch of spice. It might not be the best IPA I've ever had, but it's very, very good. 8/10
Devils Backbone & Coronado Brewing Company - Devil's Tail Black IPA I love Devils Backbone, so this collaboration mix pack was right in my wheelhouse. This one has a nice, toasty aroma, with some earthy hops. The flavor is has a great blend of toasty malt flavor and strong hop backbone. A good beer. 7/10
Back East Brewery - Misty Mountain IPA Sometimes, a random beer surprises you. This beer has a great citrusy west-coast style hope aroma. The flavor is well balanced with a nice, powerful hop flavor. There's nothing earth-shattering here, just a well executed, simple IPA. I'll have another. 7/10
Drake's Brewing - Denogginizer Imperial IPA This looked like a nice local option, while in San Jose for the week. The aroma is pleasantly fruity, with some tropical fruit and citrus scents. On the palate, the hips are a bit sharper, with a bit more citrus and grass. The malt is more complicated, and took some getting used to. This is a nicely balanced beer with a very interesting profile. Ultimately, it's not my favorite IPA, but it is a good beer. 7/10
Wild Wolf - Alpha Ale - American Pale Ale I had no expectations on this beer, but love picking up something local. The smell is a delight - classic American Pale Ale aroma of pine with hints of citrus. Unfortunately, the overwhelming aroma gives way to a subtler flavor. The beer is balanced, smooth, and easy-drinking; it's just hat the whole package is not as great as the aroma. Oh well, still a decent beer, and a brewery to visit some time... 6/10
The King's English IPA I love the name and bottle of this beer...I couldn't resist. The beer pours out much darker and richer brown than expected. It smells earthy and a bitter, maybe even a little skunked. The taste carries the earthiness but the bitterness is perfectly balanced with a tangy malt flavor. There is also an unexpected fullness to the body - heavier than most IPAs. The flavor lingers with a nice bitterness on the finish. While the sour aroma of each sip bothers me, the taste is delicious. 7/10
Heavy Seas - Peg Leg Imperial Stout It's stout season, and this is an old favorite. The aroma here is pretty standard stout fare. The flavor is deep and smokey with hints of coffee. There's also a metallic flavor that lingers a bit on the palette. I like it, but either this bottle is a bit off, or the beer is not as good as I once thought... 7/10
Flying Dog Brewery - Kujo Imperial Coffee Stout I generally like Flying Dog beers, especially their stouts. This stout has a nice coffee aroma (shocking!). The taste has a delicious bitterness well balanced with a full-bodied smokey flavor. The aftertaste is a tad more bitter than if like, but all-in-all, it's a good beer. 7/10
Sam Adams - Thirteenth Hour Stout I love the idea of a Belgian style stout--I love strong and dark Belgian ales. The immediate impression of this beer is a strong Belgian yeast aroma. Maybe I got an older bottle, because the sour yeast flavor overwhelmed everything else (there was also a lot of foam...hmm). I got a hint of coffee / chocolate flavor in the aftertaste, but it wasn't enough for me to want another pour... 2/10
Heritage Brewing - Freedom Isn't Free IPA I love the name on this can of beer from nearby Manassas, VA. The beer has a nice straw and pine aroma. The flavor is less to mike liking though. The medium bodied brew is smooth and well balanced, but flavor hop character is just not my favorite. While this wasn't my style, I will definitely try some of the other offerings from Heritage. 4/10
Green Flash - Double Stout After a long day, my hand found a bottle of green flash beer, and I was happy... This beer pours a midnight black. There are hints of chicory and cocoa in the smell of the beer. The first taste bites a bit - this is a strong and well buttered beer. The warming fullness of the hops smooths the smoky, dark flavor (some cocoa a bit of coffee and I even taste a bit of tropical fruit in the hops). Delicious. It's enough to put the longest day into my rear view mirror. 9/10
Founder's Breakfast Stout Another classic. Chocolaty aroma with a hint of coffee. The initial taste is similar to the aroma - coffee & chocolate. The medium-full body is so smooth that the aroma blends into the flavor and lingers as a smokey, warm after taste. Delicious. 9/10
Terrapin - Moo-Hoo Milk Stout It’s winter - time to drink some stouts!
This one has a pretty normal stout aroma and appearance. It’s very smooth though and a bit lighter in body than most. Normally that would be a knock against a beer, but in this case it gives way to a smooth chocolaty toasty finish. Very balanced and delicious. 8/10
