So when the twins were first adopted, they didn’t know how to read. Obviously they were put in school, but I wonder if Martin & Luella homeschooled them a little first, to catch them up on basics?
The twins learning to read for the first time. They probably learn very quickly, starting with picture books and moving on to children’s stories. Gene seems to enjoy the experience, but Naru just looks bored the whole time.
“Reading is pretty fun, huh?” Gene beams.
Naru sighs. “These books are stupid.”
During breaks, while Gene eats a snack or goes outside, Naru sneaks into Martin’s study and stares at the shelves filled with thick volumes. One day, Martin walks in to see his son sitting on the floor with a book open in his lap, frowning deeply.
“I don’t know these words.”
Martin looks over to see what he’s reading.
“That’s quite a difficult book you have there. I imagine most boys your age would have trouble reading it. Would you like a dictionary?”
“What is a ‘dictionary’?”
Martin just smiles and pulls one off a shelf. “It’s a book that explains what words mean. If you ever come across one you don’t understand, you can look it up here.”
He shows it to him and explains how to use it. A look of awe appears on the boy’s face, as if a whole new world just opened up to him.
“If you still have trouble understanding, don’t be afraid to ask. Never be afraid to ask.”
The boy just blinks, as if that never even occurred to him. “…It wouldn’t bother you?”
He thinks for a moment, then nods. “Okay.”
