It’s July 3rd and that means it is Mai Taniyama and @ghosthunthq ’s birthdays!
While it wasn’t planned this way when we started, GHHQ is very happy to share a birthday with the protagonist of Ghost Hunt!
We are one year old today and we want to thank the 231 of you who have followed us in this the inaugural year of GHHQ.
To do so GHHQ is offering a fan art giveaway contest.

There is always a theme of the twins in general and their birthday and we will have a unique theme for this year’s event as well.

Finally! Sorry it took so long. I’ve been reading and rewriting and editing John’s analysis for the nth time, and I just wasn’t satisfied until now >.< But honestly even until now—
I guess I’m just such an idiot (and extra) for these things lol But I’m just tossing it anyway, because I’ve done enough. It’s long and all, but it involves connecting things about John a bit from the original and later series as well, among other things. So I hope it helps? I just want everyone to appreciate John more~ Besides that, we haven’t gotten anything new about John after a long time… Although the short story is old…

Read a dialogue between Ghost Hunt manga illustrator Inada Shiho and the author of the original novel series, Ono Fuyumi.
This is the last translated article in the Da Vinci’s Reprint Commemoration Special Feature. The magazine had another Ghost Hunt feature a year after, in December 2011, after the rewrite was fully published. I hope you enjoyed it. As you probably know, the people of @ghosthunthq regularly post fanfic reviews. By now they’ve grown a significant collection of reviews and recommendations! I started adding these recs to ghosthunt_recs on AO3. Currently there are over 50 fics waiting to be bookmarked. The bookmarks will have the following note + a link to the review.

A chronology of the Ghost Hunt franchise and real life events, along with a short introduction which accompanied the chronological table.
This bit in the magazine was quite interesting. It clarifies something about the sequel Akumu no Sumu Ie… But otherwise it doesn’t really tell us anything new. It’s basically a chronological recap of the Ghost Hunt franchise up to 2010, along with its historical context. Though it did make me wonder why they selected certain events listed in the chronology…

Naru vs Noll
So, at this point in the story, it’s already been revealed that Naru is pronounced as Noll. However, I’m not sure if I should start translating it as Noll or leave it as Naru. Or if I should do a combination of the two. I guess what complicates the matter is that I’m translating ジーン and ユージン to Gene and Eugene. It seems strange to translate them differently especially when they’re sometimes in the same sentence. But then it’s weird to translate it as Noll with Bou-san’s nickname for him.
Take this for example (in all cases, it’s written as Naru (ナル)):
“Then, is Naru-bou your boss in the branch office?”
“Yes. More or less, Naru is the division head.”
Really?
“Even though Naru-bou is younger?”
“Age is irrelevant. Naru has performance in his favor, so as a researcher, he has seniority.”
“—While we’re at it, can I ask another question?”
“If I can answer it.”
“Nationality, is it English?”
“Naru? That’s right.”
Bou-san looked towards John for a moment.
“I heard that Noll is an American pronunciation.”
“Naru lived in the United States until he was about eight.”
“Then, are both his parents Japanese immigrants?”
“Professor Davis is a natural-born Englishman. Naru and Eugene were originally adopted.”

I’d likes some opinions. @csakuras, @yonakayaku, @witchhuntress, what do you think? What’s everyone else’s opinion?
The “Naru is the American pronunciation of Noll” has always puzzled me and I suspect it’s one of those things that Ono-sensei just got wrong. But because of that explanation, “Noll” and “Naru” are used interchangeably in the Japanese canon/fandom and are thought to be pronounced the same. Notably in the 7th rewrite novel, when Mai asks Gene what ナル is a nickname for, he replies using “Noll” (written in English). But this gets complicated when translating to English.
I discussed this with a Japanese fan before too, and she agreed that the “Narcissist” = “Naru” = “Noll” trick really only works in Japanese. I explained that in English fandom, we sometimes differentiate who addresses him by “Noll” and “Naru,” and why I decided on using “Noll” when translating “His Reality.” Because not only was there the question of how Lin would address him, but how Naru would refer to himself since it was in his POV. My conclusion was that since English comes to him more naturally, he might usually think of himself as “Noll.” But depending on the situation (like when he’s with Mai or the Irregulars), maybe he would think of himself as “Naru” too, and Lin would differentiate in the same way.
My friend thought that since the twins were bilingual, maybe Gene used “Noll” with a Japanese pronunciation (Naru), and since Madoka used Japanese with the twins, she might use “Naru” too. But I argued that since Lin and Naru probably spoke in English when they were first introduced to each other, “Noll” might come more naturally in their relationship. But Lin also addresses him as “Naru” when they’re speaking in Japanese, and it’s not entirely clear which language they use together in private.
ANYWAY. So basically, there is no right answer for this since there’s no difference when it comes to the Japanese POV. It’s something that we translators and English fans just have to interpret and decide for ourselves depending on the situation. ^^; My policy is to use “Naru” when any of the characters from Japan address him (because that’s what they have always known him as), “Noll” when any characters from England or BSPR address him, “Naru” when any Japanese-speaking characters from BSPR (Lin, Madoka) address him in Japanese, and “Noll” when they address him in English. But that’s just me!
It seems everything I wanted to say has already been said. :P
I agree with witchhuntress here:
I think it’s fine to use ‘Noll’ when the sentence necessitates the use of it, for explanation, emphasis, compare and contrast, etc. But I think it makes sense if they’ll revert to Naru in later dialogues since that’s what they’re used to. Well, that’s what I think. 😅
I use this approach as well:
My policy is to use “Naru” when any of the characters from Japan address him (because that’s what they have always known him as), “Noll” when any characters from England or BSPR address him, “Naru” when any Japanese-speaking characters from BSPR (Lin, Madoka) address him in Japanese, and “Noll” when they address him in English.
In short, it all depends on the context.
