G3 Backcard-style commission from @/raggstosketches on Instagram :]
I loved making this piece because I love using my passion-made skill of drawing G3 ponies for people who share that sincere admiration & love for the generation, but I also loved making it because it reminded me how cool the greater MLP community is. Several different people came together out of the kindness of their hearts to help me find the resources I needed to accurately recreate this, and they did so immediately and without a second thought. Without them, I would have had much more trouble finding the fonts, and I probably would have spent hours recreating the background pattern, but all I had to do was voice my troubles one single time and seconds later, a jpeg of the exact pattern I needed was sent. I love this place. There really is something special about the camaraderie of classic-mlp fans.
good eye and good memory! 9 months ago I was commissioned by the same lovely person to create this :)
and yeah I definitely am extremely thankful for repeat clients, in part because I start to get attached to the characters so it’s like a special treat 😄 thank you very much for your praise too 🙏 it indeed takes many layers and much planning and my poor 8-year-old iPad is coughing and sputtering the whole time but We Make It Work!!! and it’s work i love to do so I always feel fulfilled at the end of the day :)

Recreating a G3 Backcard!
Big thanks to raggstosketches on Instagram for commissioning this piece, what a fun project to work through!! G3 is incredibly near and dear to my heart, so when I get to create G3 artwork for people to whom it matters just as much? That’s a gift!
This is actually my second commissioned work for this person (the first one being partially visible in this post, as I use it to color pick) and both times it has been a dream come true 💕 This time, I was commissioned because she’s getting another artist to make a G3 toy custom of Red Velvet! I’ve seen a sneak peak, and it’s looking AMAZING. This OC is feeling so real to me, I can easily imagine her in the G3 world as if she were an official character. Thank you again, raggstosketches, for bringing your wonderful commission idea to me!
MLP Friends are Never Far Away! Comic reading 📖
Skywishes and Star Catcher are two of my favorite G3 ponies, as I’m sure I share in common with many others. Make A New Friend Every Day was one of the first MLP songs I ever heard, even years before I knew about the full episode, and it’s still one of the closest to my heart! 💖 As a kid my first exposure to MLP animated media was the digital Popcorn Theater section of the G3 Welcome to Ponyville flash game. I played that game so often while it was on MLP’s website! Inside the Popcorn Theater, you could watch clips of songs from all the G3 animated material. I didn’t have any MLP cartoons of my own until I got Pinkie Pie’s Special Day, of which the runtime is 11 minutes of mostly clip show. I still loved it! I just didn’t get to see most of the full specials until I was much older. I do know I watched the 1986 movie and I THINK A Very Minty Christmas when I was 6, at a then-3yo friend’s house… But I’ve since lost contact with her, and she was also… three… so I’m not sure she’d remember the specifics even if I could ask. Where was I going with this? I dunno. The Popcorn Theater is so fun. You can still find this game on various flash game archives. I loved the theater section so much especially because I had the Popcorn Theater PLAYSET with Starsong and interchangeable scenes for the theater screen. They’re a but worse for wear, but I still have both my scenes! So off-topic to this comic lol but I love yappin’ ponies!
parts one and two together 💖
Remember when new generations looked and/or acted substantially different? (Part 1 due to the stupid mobile image limit)
Part 2
Part 3
(Mrs. Cake half-counts, on account of her toy name being Dazzle Cake instead of the show's Cup Cake, and there was a mail-order birth flower Morning Glory released the year before the flutter pony)
Part 4
Correction: There was actually four Cupcakes!
Images from my addition are all from mlpmerch.
Check out this MLP deadstock! Have you found this near you?
This SpotLite Project-A-Lite toy is dated 2015, and was released to promote the Cutie Mark Magic toy line. This era was around season 5 of My Little Pony, when the Cutie Map was introduced and began summoning ponies across Equestria with the magic of their Cutie Marks. Most pony toys around this time have extra cutie marks printed on their legs and eyes, as evidenced by the Pinkie Pie vector used on this packaging. Strangely, Cutie Marks in the show seldom take up more space like this. Smaller cutie marks appear on the Mane Six when they go Rainbow Power mode, but that’s a different gimmick from the prior year. It would be cool to see the ponies power-up and have their Cutie Marks grow across their bodies, temporarily increasing their natural talents.
What do you think of the Cutie Mark Magic line? I personally wish they would release more plain ponies without gimmicks— it’s not that I dislike gimmicks, far from it! But sometimes, a pony’s ONLY toy release is in a gimmick line and not a regular toy, and THAT always annoyed me. Examples include but are not limited to Bon Bon, Roseluck, Aloe, Photo Finish, and Octavia. None of those ponies got plain, show-accurate, 3” brushable toys. They all have patterns or added mane colors that pulls me out of the immersion. It just bothers me so much that these ponies didn’t get a regular release before a gimmick release— or a regular release at ALL! These are the passionate complaints of my inner child. I may be 24 as I share them, but trust that they are the rantings of a 12 year old.
Spike has his heart set on Rarity, but even if he WEREN’T a baby dragon… I think she’s got her priorities elsewhere. Best move on, Spike buddy, it’s a moot point.
I wonder how the Spike/Rarity dynamic would have developed overtime had Lauren Faust stayed on the show past season 2. She very clearly understood what she set up, but subsequent writers end up vastly misinterpreting how Spike and Rarity are supposed to interact, of course leading to some of the most universally-agreed upon worst episodes MLP: FiM has to offer. It’s truly a shame how often FiM gets basic things like this so wrong, as it’s a children’s show and should be setting the standard for child safety with adults, rather than being the open gateway to so, so much internet child abuse. I really think child experts should make a return to the writers’ rooms on children’s television.
How do nylon and polypropylene hair hold up 2 weeks after curling?
If I wanted to be scientific about it, this wouldn’t be fair because I spent a lot of time playing with the nylon Rarity, and didn’t even touch the polypropylene Rarity. But even with the odds stacked in her favor, polypropylene Rarity can’t hold a candle to the performance nylon Rarity’s hair effortlessly puts on.
If nylon Rarity were sitting untouched these past two weeks? Forget about it! That curl would be nearly as crisp and sharp as it was the day I unwrapped it. Just another piece of proof that little ponies should have nylon hair— it’s good texture, long-lasting, and easy to style. Everyone deserves a pony with beautiful, luscious hair! It’s what the brand is built on after all, isn’t it?
Kinda been obsessed with leopard print lately tbh
Wishes Do Come True! by Ann Marie Capaljia, illustrated by Lyn Fletcher
This story is one of my childhood favorites! The art in it is some of the best G3 has to offer, and it’s such a whimsical, magical tale 🥹 I’m so lucky to have gotten to grow up reading this and having it read to me! Now I get to share it with all of you ❤️
If you’ve watched Dancing in the Clouds, you may catch a few notable similarities and differences in this story. The story of Star Catcher meeting the Ponyville ponies is told about three or four different ways across MLP media, this one being my favorite printed version. Another version of this story, an I-Can-Read book called Belle of the Ball, focuses only on the first part of this book’s story, with Star Catcher meeting Twinkle Twirl and magically granting her a dress for he Best Friends’ Ball. But in the animated version of this story, we never see Star Catcher meet Twinkle Twirl first at all! Or if it does happen, it’s off-screen and not mentioned, which would make sense with how Twinkle Twirl promised not to tell, though I’m not sure that was intentional by the writers. There may also be one more telling of this story in an MLP annual, though I’d have to double-check.
Which version of this story are you most familiar with? Do you have a favorite? Skywishes and Star Catcher make for the most magical duo!
I luv her new bangs sm <333
how it feels to start wanting the toys from the show made to sell toys
Spike, buddy… chill.
Sometimes this dynamic of is entertaining and cute, and sometimes it’s really off-putting. It depends on which writers are working on the scene, I imagine. Lauren Faust did it best, truly understanding Spike as a little boy with a puppy-love crush and Rarity as an adult who found it flattering and adorable, but never something she would entertain. It fast moves away from that in the show though, so I’m just gonna clutch Season 1 close to my heart and pretend like MLP HASN’T gotten way gross and weird with it. …………..ok but they totally have. And I want them to do better in the future. Gravity Falls handled this best I’ve ever seen, with the way Wendy addressed Dipper’s feelings to her. Would it have been so hard to get something like that in MLP?! Instead of… (shudders) that one late show episode where Spike moves on to Gabby and Rarity gets jealous… MLP deserves more emotionally intelligent writing!
Painting Sweetie Belle’s Little Pony Portrait!
I feel so whimsical making these itsy paintings for my ponies 🥺 they add so much playability to my easel accessory, and it’s exciting to know that even if I’m focusing on the Core 7 now, I can paint LITERALLY anything to put on that easel! …as long as I can paint it small enough!
