Y'know being a kid (early teen) in the early 2010s made it really easy to make fun of Rebecca Black, because kids are often damn mean to each other. But looking back on it, kids weren't the ones spreading that video and mocking it. I think back to that video now, and how she looked in it... She was singing a song about riding the school bus and enjoying the weekend. She looked like a kid. She was a kid.

As an adult, I'm kind of horrified in retrospect. Grown ass adults around the globe more or less went to a middle school talent show to throw tomatoes.

Specifically older teens and 20somethings, who were sufficiently close to those awkward middle school years for it to stir up insecurities about their own awkwardness. I was an actual grown ass adult at the time (like around 40) and the vast majority of people over 30 either (a) didn’t know about it at all because they neither followed pop music nor were terminally online, or (b) shrugged their shoulders and said “yeah, rich kid shit” and went about their day.

As someone in the second category, the reaction from the college-age crowd was baffling and frankly disappointing. There was no reason to be that weird and mean simultaneously about it; it was like Black became the scapegoat for everyone’s feelings of cringe - the cringegoat, if you will.

[Benjamin Hanil] Song, the most harshly sentenced Prairieland defendant, having received a 100-year prison term, gave a moving statement in response to their sentence, explaining for the first time the motivations for their actions the night of the noise demonstration at the Prairieland ICE Detention Center. “What we all saw happen to Renee Good and Alex Pretti is my worst nightmare,” said Song. “So, when I was standing in the street on July 4th, 2025, in plain view with reflective safety strips and high visibility clothing, what I saw right in front of my eyes was my worst nightmare,” continued Song. “When I saw Lieutenant Thomas Gross stop pursuing and point his gun at the back of a running, unarmed protester, like he testified, I was terrified.”

“As a firearms instructor and a United States Marine Corps Veteran, I understood what I was seeing. I knew what it meant for someone to lean forward into a gun, […] to prepare for recoil. As the evidence shows, I did not want to hurt anyone. I never had the intent to hurt anyone. It is impossible to say that I was trying to ambush or anyone or planning violence,” Song told the court. “I am so grateful that we are not here mourning another death and tragedy. hi. im currently living in an abusive environment and its. bad. i had surgery awhile back and still have a huge wound that nearly spans into my intestines because it's taking a long time to heal and they didn't want to close me up. i had no choice but to move back here. my mom promised that she would help me with stuff while i recover but she yells at me every time i ask for help with anything and im not capable of doing any of it by myself without further injuring myself

i need help. i cant afford housing rn bc donos have been difficult and idk if i can get a caregiver but if i could at least get help with basic expenses like food and getting my phone activated and saving up for if (when lbr) i need a quick escape i would really appreciate it
