First Secretary, Secretariat’s first (test) foal born. Several Appaloosa enthusiasts contacted Claiborne Farm to buy the mare and her unborn foal. John and Lynn Nankivil of Winona, Minnesota, prevailed with an undisclosed amount of money and purchased Leola and the chance that she carried a colored colt. Even before the foal´s birth, several breeders had purchased breeding rights to Secretariats first foal, without knowing if Leola would produce a colt. First Secretary´s November birthday made him ineligible to race, so instead his owners used him as a stud. He sired 247 foals including 39 race starters and 33 point earners. First Secretary lived into old age and died in 1993 after suffering from colic.

@virtie333 they changed it to be more correct to the phenotype as these are all different colors.

Red roan is chestnut (red) with roan over it.

Bay roan is bay with roan over it.

The biggest give away is the head, mane, tail (although I have seen some roans with a lot of white in their tails) and legs will retain the base coat color, making it easy to identify what version of roan they are.

So anyway, AQHA changing from strawberry roan to red roan is technically more correct.

Just for funsies, here’s a blue roan, the only one where the change from calling them by their phenotype is widely accepted (that I’m aware of):

Another fun fact, when injured roans will often lose the roaning in that area, as demonstrated by this mustang stallion.

apparently the only way you can get a buckskin is if you crossbreed an Andalusian to a Quarter Horse :) Who knew
