Sade's debut album was released on 16 July 1984.

While 25-year-old Sade Adu and her band (guitarist/saxophonist Stewart Matthewman, drummer Paul Anthony Cook, bassist Paul Denman, keyboardist Andrew Hale) had plenty of experience performing live, they had never been in a recording studio before sessions for Diamond Life. Recorded in 6 weeks, the group completed 15 songs (9 would appear on the album), all co-written by Adu (mostly with Matthewman, except "Smooth Operator," which was co-written with Ray St. John), except the cover of Timmy Thomas' 1972 song "Why Can't We Live Together."

Diamond Life was a critical and commercial success, reaching the #1 spot in 6 countries, peaking at #2 in the UK, #5 in the US, and selling more than 12 million copies worldwide. It received the 1985 Brit Award for Best Album.
