Does Betting Make People Stupid?
Is that a stupid question? It could be. How many stupid people does it take to change a lightbulb? I’ve got no idea but I’m using a plural. This bloke looks more bored than stupid. However, I guess if I asked a question, someone would say he’s a stupid mother f..... Just because he doesn’t look like a model in a glossy magazine.Â
It’s a funny thing, but when you get to know someone really well, you don’t think about what they look like.Â
Meet my mate, Joe. ‘’He’s a funny-looking bloke’’, they say. I’ve never really thought about it.Â
I wonder if he likes to gamble. That would make him really stupid!
Now, I don’t associate all gamblers as being the s-word. I bet and I don’t like to think I’m stupid. I mean, I’m not perfect but I have a gambling discipline which probably sets me apart from a decent number of bet until they drop folk.Â
However, I hate to say it, that a lot of people who gamble are stupid. They turn from a person with five degrees, a good job, responsible and even have a few premium bonds tucked away, into a weak, foolish bucket of shite. Come race day or a trip to the casino, they leave their brain in a jar by the door. They act like a child in a sweet shop who is high on something Willy Wonka kept in a brown paper bag under the counter.Â
‘‘I’ll have a quarter of those, I’m going to the casino later.’‘
Very strange.Â
For some gambling must trigger a dormant part of the old brain which lacks logic or reason. Some bookie shouts 1/2f for both horses in a two-horse race and they bet on both.
If you go out and someone turns into a gambling fiend then leave as quickly as you can. You know for a fact, by the end of the night when the rational part of the brain starts to pulse into action that it’s going to end in tears.Â
‘’What will I tell the wife?’’
Just say you spent it on a high-class prossy and she’ll forget all about the betting which ‘’never happened’’.
Do You Like To Bet?
Not sure why I’ve got this photo of a man with paper eyes. I guess he is asleep, dreaming about betting or going to the casino? (Joke).Â
Betting. What does that word mean to you? What image does it conjure up? Some sad loser, with a fag in one hand and a bottle of meths in the other? I guess that is the case for some poor soul who has been begging on the street and decide to chance their luck rather than by a sobering cup of coffee.
I think there is a distinct void between gamblers and those who do not. I wonder if people who don’t gamble associate their decisions in the term of percentage. I have a 60% chance of getting the job. It could be termed as a betting average although I guess if you don’t see it as a gamble it isn’t (in your mind at least). I guess you have to have something to lose to make a gamble.Â
I view most things in life as a gamble.Â
Is it wise to have that kind of mentality because it is a form of assessment, which most people lack? I don’t think it is a bad thing when most don’t consider many variables. Like a headless chicken running about and crashing into stuff until they keel over.Â
I think a wise person bets. Not recklessly. They bet with understanding and worth.Â
Are Handsome Horses Better?
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Sounds like cyclops out on the pull. I guess it takes all sorts to make the world go round. I remember someone saying: ‘’Money makes the world go round but love keeps it spinning.’’ I’m not exactly sure what they mean by that.
I often watch old comedies and one, in particular, is On The Buses. It ran from 1969 - 73. It was sure sexist, homophobic and racist stuff in ways. That was just par for the course in the old days. It was a comedy, they need to latch onto something. Anyway, I think it is even funnier with age. One of the main characters Jack Harper used to use the term: ‘’Handsome’’ for almost anything.Â
Well, handsome is as handsome does.Â
But do handsome horses go better than ugly ducklings? A handsome filly. Fillies don’t usually measure up to the colts especially when two-year-olds. However, within their own age group, they do vary from one extreme to the other. Often, the more expensive the horse, the more attractive it looks physically. Not to say a beautiful, handsome, beast doesn’t run slow. However, in general, a handsome horse does go better than not. So if you go to the races, looking at horses walking around the paddock, you may note the best looking horse in the field. Â
It’s not a bad starting point for picking a winner.Â
What’s Your Lucky Number?
I wonder if you have been to a casino? Probably sounds a stupid question if you have. ‘’Yes, I went last week and lost £10,000.’’ Great night! Hopefully, that didn’t happen.Â
I have been to a few casinos. Great Yarmouth, Notting and Luton. I lost a small amount at Nottingham but won at Luton. I go to Great Yarmouth Grosvenor quite often and I do enjoy it there, especially after a day at the races.Â
I don’t bet a great deal. If I lose it’s no more than £50. I think the most I have lost in any one night is £60, which is a drop in the ocean to the majority who like a bet. All this fixed odds stuff is bad news if you bet a wedge over a good few hours you are almost certain to lose.Â
I have done must better on roulette than three-card poker. I’m not keen on the latter. I had a really good night with a prial and good hands and the amount I won was not what I would have imagined. The cut is far too high on pair plus. it’s strange how no one ever seems to think or so about the casino edge on these games. Bizarre, when that is one of the major factors to winning and losing. It is the act of a mug punter.Â
I enjoy roulette much more. The rake is a lot less at 2.7% or something like that which means you have a fair chance of winning if you get lucky in the first hour or so.Â
I simply look to see which number has come up a few times and follow it. There is no logic to why it should come up again, but it often does. Rather than someone following a cold number and hoping it turns hot. It doesn’t seem to happen.
Betting a single number and corner. I have done very well betting like this and only start with £20. Last time we stayed at the Nelson Hotel, which was a very cheap stay and enjoyable breakfast. I won £80 playing roulette that evening. My brother got lucky betting on number 9 and won £280.Â
All in all, it is a good night out.Â
What Does Your Table Look Like?
That’s me all ready for the day. Getting ready for a day of betting. What do I need? Laptop, tablets, a cup of coffee...
I guess we all have a different format to the good old day of gambling. There wasn’t all this technology and information. In truth, we can find just about any information we need if we are willing to put in a little bit of work.Â
I’ve been preparing for the start of the new Flat turf season. It is a busier time than actually evaluating the day’s racing. I run a website called www.grouphorse.co.uk which details all the two-year-old horses. It specifically identifies the best unraced and lightly raced two-year-olds in training. Horses the trainer would rather you didn’t know about.Â
Well, they shouldn’t be so quick to reveal their hands (four aces). The fact of the matter is that can’t help but detail this information if you know where to look. That is the difference between someone who understands their niche and someone who doesn’t.Â
The process of winning starts by simply looking in the right direction. If you are looking to the south as Pegasus flies to the north, you are going to miss the winged horses.Â
I have been gambling for many years and look forward to this season. if anyone has any questions I am always here to help. Â
To New Beginnings & 4909 Posts
Well, I really need to do something with this website so I will be writing posts from now on rather than simply reposting from the other websites I run. You may have noticed the change of title to Shark Bets & Muse.Â
I guess that means I should give a few tips! I specialise withing two-year-old horse racing to a high level. Not none of this normal kind of tipping which goes as far back as the Racing Post (last three races). Anyway, each to their own.
I have recently purchased an annual membership to Great Yarmouth Racecourse. I do enjoy a day at the races and Yarmouth holds many memories of my Dad, family holiday and candyfloss.Â
So, I will be venturing to the Norfolk coast a good few times this Flat season, which isn’t too far away now.Â
I’ve been working on my horse trainer stats. It’s informative but about as boring as watching paint dry until the final calculation reveals it’s a Van Goff (sic).Â
Looking forward to writing a few posts here and to a good season ahead.
