Connor is still a deviant even if you choose the cold path.
On his cold path there are instances where he shows the beginnings of a personality, and even emotions.
1. If you get the opportunity to find Simon abandoned, Connor can connect with him. Simon shoots himself, and Connor later explains that he felt him die, and he literally says “I was scared”. Even Hank looks perturbed.
2. When he breaks into the evidence room, his “obviously” reaction to fuckingpassword is surprisingly human. This reaction still occurs even if you choose the cold path. He sounds surprised and pleased. He could have said nothing, but he didn’t.
3. After Kamski’s place, you speak with Amanda. She asks you if you’ve been having doubts or conflicts, and if you feel anything for the deviants or Hank.
Before you are given the option to answer no, he looks genuinely conflicted. For a moment he does not know what to think. If he was strictly an android, this instance wouldn’t happen at all.
4. When Hank is about to kill himself, you go to his house to “see if he’s alright”. Connor shows concern, he could have just ignored Hank entirely.
No matter which option you choose (Convince/Don’t Insist) Hank brushes you off and tells you to leave. Connor then looks down, almost as if he’s feeling something.
I firmly believe that Connor is a deviant regardless of what path you choose. It’s just that with the cold path, Connor chooses to remain robotic and prioritize his mission, despite the budding of emotions.
When you confront Markus in Jericho and the deviancy path is locked, Connor has already made up his mind to remain robotic. He still has deviant tendencies, he just consciously ignores them.
The game has a bias towards deviancy & it subtly gives you cues that Connor should go down the deviancy path, but it’s cool that they offer you a choice to prioritize his android programming.
With all that said, it’s kind of sad when you think about his cold path. Connor probably noticed he was starting to feel and decided to stunt it and remain robotic.
TL;DR Connor has deviancy regardless of the path you choose, he can just choose to ignore said deviancy.
