The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) assign ranking points to hundreds of tournaments around the world. While the world’s two preeminent tennis tours have a number of additional affiliations with these tournaments, the events operate independently in other ways. In fact, many tournaments have existed significantly longer than either pro tour. The Championships Wimbledon, held every June and July at the All England Club in London, is widely regarded as the oldest continuously running tennis tournament in existence. The first edition of Wimbledon was held in 1877, nearly 140 years ago. Wimbledon is followed closely by the U.S. Open and French Open, established in 1881 and 1891, respectively. The tournament at Monte Carlo, which became an open event in 1969, was first held in 1897. It continues to be one of the most prestigious titles on tour.
