FONT
A font is a particular size, weight and style of a typeface.
Three common fonts are Bold, Underline, And italic which is shown above.
1. Bold
Bold type can add an emphasis or strength to a font.
2. Underline
Underlined type is an effective way of emphasizing the title of a document.
It can also be used to call attention to an important section of text.
3. Italic
Italic fonts have an animated style and are often selected for designs where there is a need to convey the illusion of speed and energy.
2 Main Font Types
1. Serif fonts are the most legible and are commonly used for large blocks of text. Serifs are the small lines tailing from the edges of letters and symbols.
2. Sans-serif fonts are simply fonts without serifs (Gothic). It is considered more modern by many.
Using Font Types (Serif/Sans Serif)
Serifs fonts are easier to read in print. This is because the serif makes the letters more distinctive and easier for our brains to recognize quickly.
Sans-serif fonts are better on the web. This is because computer monitors are typically 100 dots per inch. Printed works usually have a resolution of 1000 dots per inch so therefor serifs will be difficult to read on screen and sans-serifs are difficult to read in print.
Massimo Vignelli
Designer Massimo Vignelli was known for his iconic New York City subway map and American Airlines logo, among many other designs like Bloomingdales and Knoll. He believed that to use less actually improves design.
These are three of his fonts used in his works.
