hello, i was wondering, if cas can sense longing, how come he didn't know dean was still alive after the soul bomb didn;t go off?
Hello,Nonnie! To answer your question, first I have to remind everyone that thelonging retcon was introduced in 10x10, an episode written by Buckleming. Thosewriters are not exactly famous for being careful with established canon, and that’s something we need to keep in mind.
The longingthing has never been mentioned after season 10 –though it was highly implied insubtext in 11x21 (another ep written by Buckleming). In that ep, Amara putLucifer to sleep (for lack of a better word), and only then could she pick upon the longing Dean was feeling for Cas, the longing that took her to Dean despitebeing unable to find him before.
Otherwriters haven’t used the longing retcon, but everyone in the fandom accepted itas a new piece of canon and ran with it as the best way to explain how Casalways found Dean in season 8.
For instance, in 8x07:
Or in 8x21:
The thingis that what Buckleming explained and what the fandom has accepted as canonmight not be exactly the same.
I have seen people who think that Cas ispermanently feeling Dean’s longing. It sounds poetic and romantic, I know; Idon’t mind that in fanfic, but what Cas said about it in 10x10 was a littledifferent.
CLAIRE: [ToCas] How the hell did you find me?
CASTIEL: Angelsare able to find those who pray to them.
CLAIRE: Pray?Oh believe me, I gave up praying a long time ago.
CASTIEL: Well, itdoesn’t have to be a formal prayer. I could pick up on a – a longing…Perhaps you wanted to tell me something?
The way Iunderstand it is like the kind of conversation you have in your mind when you’retalking to someone as if they were present. In Claire’s case, it might havebeen something like: “Stupid Castiel, I hate your guts, but I guess you’reright and I should try to do things a little bit different.”
In Dean’scase in 11x21, it must have been something like: “Dammit, Cas, where are you? What else can I do to find you?” (I mean, look at Dean’s face seconds before Amara talked to him)
I don’tthink we’re talking about a completely unconscious feeling but an unconscious prayer, or atleast that’s how Cas described it: “Angels are able to find those who pray tothem. […] It doesn’t have to be a formal prayer.”
In 11x23,when the soul bomb didn’t go off, it’s very unlikely that Dean washaving an unconscious conversation with Cas in his mind. He was dealing with Chuck and hissister, he was worried about Earth once Chuck decided to leave again, and thenhe was kind of lost, trying to find signal for his phone.
Maybe he would havestarted thinking about Cas the moment he realized he was lost if he hadn’t heard a woman asking for help -a woman that turned out to be his mother, who had been dead for morethan 30 years.
Once he sawMary, I’m sure any possibility of Dean thinking about Castiel vanished. That’swhy Cas didn’t feel any longing.
Again, Ilike the fandom’s interpretation of the longing retcon when it’s used in fanfiction, but sometimes that interpretation doesn’t make much sense in canon.
Lucifer vs. Rowena: A Study in Character Development
Also known as, actions speak louder than words. Lucifer continually claims to have changed, but no one else perceives it that way because his actions haven’t changed at all. He’s still just as self-serving as he’s always been, and everyone can see it but him.
Rowena, however, doesn’t claim to have changed - quite the opposite, in fact. She calls herself “flawed, petty, and evil” - but in this case, her peers disagree. Her actions show that she’s changed, that she’s grown as a person.
Lucifer and Rowena both had the opportunity to use Sam in a ploy to get their son back, but only one went through with it. So who is the “flawed, petty, evil creature” and who has truly changed?

THIS IS A LITTLE LATE BUT I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS AFTER 13X18 STILL
after that ep i saw a lot of “i wanted gabriel back but not like this >:(” that i was seriously surprised by! i think after all of this time headcanons have drowned out what the show has already portrayed and what’s already been written
i had a lot of people saying “yeah but gabe already left after all of that :(((” in my inbox, but i wasn’t even vaguely upset when he left, and here’s why!
i love husbands
The CW: Save Wayward Sisters
Alternate reality Castiel’s damaged eye.
It doesn’t really seem like a coincidence that we were reminded of certain things just a few episodes ago, does it…?
Idk tho this whole show is one giant coincidence ;)
misha in various stages of undress + jeremy carver episodes
#Cue thirsty Jeremy pic lol (ssjdebusk)
Cas walked/talked/moved a lot like misha this ep i felt
Party!Cas finds time for yoga.
His mannerisms have been softening up for years. I remember someone reblogging a gifset of Cas from 10x09 and weeping a lot in the tags about how human his mannerisms were… And that was a long while ago.
A lot of people laughed at me describing animated Cas as more active and normal Cas as “a wall of ‘fuck you’ that occasionally stabs people” but he has been a little less stiff lately, but he definitely still was acting very angelic in the Bunker, like, not sitting down, even if he might have leaned, and not accepting an offer for a drink. Then in Heaven he was flopping on the furniture, bored and distracted… if there had been a minibar in the throne room, he’d have made himself a cocktail. I think the contrast was somewhat deliberate… Cas is still somewhat between worlds, still more angel than human in Sam and Dean’s presence, but more human than angel around the angels - now he’s the only one wearing colour and the one sassing the angels, using the wrong words to them, and then meeting Naomi, a reminder of how angels USED to be programmed back to a robotic perfect working condition.
There’s a lot of interplay between the writing, directing and acting going on and it’s all describing Cas lusciously and I love it :D
the character development
You know I was reading an article in the Hollywood Reporter yesterday about how rare it is for shows to get the balance between comedy and gore or violence and drama down pat. And that a lot of times it feels like the show doesn’t have a good grasp on the tone it wants. A lot of shows try to have this mix, but it ends up being really jarring. And then obviously I went home and watched the new episode of supernatural with that article fresh in my mind, and it really drove home an aspect of the show that I’ve always loved but don’t really see discussed. Because spn is so very good at this balance. So good, in fact, that it’s kind of in a league of its own. We’ve seen it countless times in episodes like mystery spot and changing channels and the french mistake and so on and so forth. Often the seemingly irreverent episodes are the ones with the biggest reveals. Spn has almost a seamless balance between it’s comedic elements and it dramatic elements that you hardly even notice the tonal shift - whether it’s episode to episode, act to act, scene to scene. They’ve really forged their own path here, and it’s something I’ve always admired about the show. And it’s certainly something I don’t think gets enough praise. Because they pull it off. Somehow. They have you in stitches at the beginning of an episode, and by the end you have tears in your eyes. And there’s a huge difference between noticing in the moment “wait this isn’t funny anymore” and realizing after the fact “hey wasn’t I laughing uproariously at the beginning of this episode?” When so-called high caliber shows miss their mark or try and fail to create this balance, spn has been excelling at it for 13 seasons.
gonna butt in here on your point because supernatural’s mastery is navigating humor to drama to violence is something that i think about A Lot.
the main reason the show is so so good at being funny at the same time it is heartbreaking and “epic,” is due to all these shifts being motivated by character instead of being shoehorned in the story to ~~lighten the mood and vice versa. dean actually is a huge dork with his sense of humor; cas is hilarious in his misunderstanding of human peculiarities; and sam’s deadpan stares are quintessentially sammy. likewise, episodes like changing channels and the french mistake use actual plot points to create scenarios that aren’t amusing in and of themselves, but are funny because of how sam and dean (and cas) react to them. granted, changing channels is pretty funny on its own, but, then, that’s because it’s a gabriel thing. in other words, all these moments for comedy stem from how realistic sam, dean, cas, and other characters are. they have a sense of humor and they react to the world they live in; a world that, as we know, is full of shenanigans. incidentally, that elevator scene is so so good because it follows the same principle, but flipped. if regular people came across dean in a fight like in the scene, they would just quietly leave – while the audience is in stitches because from the outside the world of supernatural is wild af.
and of course, all of this stuff works because the actors have such a brilliant sense of comedic timing.
13x19 was hands down the best episode this half of season 13 so far!
Rowena tangoed - can she tango with Sam next please?
Cas is called handsome again and gets all awkward about it
He is extremely handsome in this episode I mean lbr
DEANS FACE when Rowena calls Cas handsome!
The whole kitchen exchange scene. Lots to chew on there…
“Ball handler” lol
ROWENA just being awesome throughout
NAOMI BEING UNAPOLOGETIC YOU COW *I love her*
Textual reminder of Cas killing hundreds of Deans (8x17 call back)
Poor depressed angel. #same dude
DEAN TOTALLY HAS A CRUSH ON ASHTON KUTCHER DON’T TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME I WAS RIGHT THERE WITH YOU DEAN.
Jessica was brilliant
BILLIE AND ROWENA AND THAT CONVERSATION URGH SO PERFECT
all the potential terrible things to come. More darkness hanging over the season. So ominous. Love it.
The shot of Cas by the sandbox which shot for shot I stg is an exact match to 6x20. I need to check, but it’s totally a 6x20 call back.
So we have had callbacks to the TWO gayest episodes pre season 12 in one episode?
Sam had so much faith in Rowena and I love it I love that he has bonded with her I love their connection and Dammit I might actually be starting to ship it. Crap.
“SEE YOU SOON DEAN” WHAT DO YOU MEAN SEEN HIM SOON BILLIE?!? YOU COME BACK HERE AND EXPLAIN RIGHT NOW!!
Just… This whole episode man. Steve YOKEY you brilliant bastard. Can you please write a dozen more episodes each season because we need this kind of quality writing more often!
Ill write up a substantial review later but I just wanted to flail with you all this morning about this! We’ve needed a strong rise of positivity recently and damn did YOKEY deliver!
