I'm in the Facebook group for the class of 2023 and ppl are doing introductions and like ... it's overwhelming how wealthy everyone is and how everyone has gone to some fancy, elite private school ... and I just went to a shitty public school bc im hella poor lmao. Now I'm just kinda freaking out that I'm not well-prepared and won't fit in?? Any advice?

Hi Eleni! I noticed that you did a lot of stuff with writing, but you also did a lot of research. In your app, which do you think you focused more on? Idk I do similar things, and I've just been hearing a lot about packaging yourself and I'm kinda confused about what to emphasize, especially in my essays
i think i would mostly just like write about writing in one essay and then research in another? like i tried to include both whenever possible

How did you compose a college list?
at first my college list was super duper long & i kinda just composed it based on like schools i’d heard of, and then i eliminated based on like kinda objective things i was looking for, like school size, strong programs, location, stuff like that. and then after that i based it off of like school vibe i guess? either from like visiting the school or what i’d heard from friends that went to them or the internet

Is it actually possible for a common app essay's topic to be unique? I'm getting so discouraged... I like my essays but I feel like they've been done before
yeah so while i think there are some truly unique common app essay topics, i think what most of us do is just take an un-unique topic and make it our own…..like project your own voice & opinions onto it until it reflects who you are

How do you deal w parents who don't know shit about the college app process and make it so much more stressful than it needs to be ?
hahahahahaha o man this was literally my mother!!!!! like no shade to her, it’s a stressful process for everyone, and she did just want what was best for me, but also……..they’re not the ones literally submerged in it 24/7, and they don’t know how a lot of it works, or they think they do, which is even worse tbh
i think at first i would fight her on a lot of things, but i’m not a very stubborn person, and it would like very dramatically hurt me every time we’d fight about things, so eventually i’d give in to her demands, like for example my mom really wanted to read my common app essay…….but like i didn’t want her to at all bc it’s personal!!! and literally about childhood memories that she was involved in, but yeah i eventually gave in and let her read it and then that was a whole thing, and many edited versions came from it, only one of which i thought was necessarily better than the original, and i think after a while she just like got used to it too, so yeah i’m not really sure what the best way to deal with them is, esp since every family relationship is unique, but just have faith that you’ll find your way through it. & in hindsight college apps isn’t even something we think about anymore, and definitely did not have a lasting impact on our relationship

is 40 hours of ec's too much?
uhh not sure, but what i did was just like write down the hours you’re in school, eating meals, sleeping (& even if u don’t actually sleep 7 hours, i’d calculate that in as like the minimum colleges would want to see u sleep lmao), and then if your ec hours make sense in context of all of that, then it’s probably fine?

How do u balance friendships w college apps esp when ur friends are applying to the same colleges and are now being hella fake and you know they're literally BS'ing their entire activities list bc they have literally spent their past 4 years trying to get all A+'s
ooooooo yeah there were a lot of kiddos at my hs who were like this……and i think i just like tried to avoid them as much as possible? i was lucky that my really close friends were not like that at all and we weren’t even really applying to the same schools, esp early, but yeah it’s definitely a hard time, and i guess as sad as this sounds, just remember that once you head off to college, you’ll literally stay in touch with maybe like one or two of them so they will not matter to u

How did u spend like the waiting time after u submitted ur early college apps until the decisions came out ?
hm i think i’m answering this question kinda late (ack sorry), but maybe it still applies to regular decision? honestly school was kinda still really hard for me at the time so i put a lot of my energy into that and just like staying afloat……..i think i tried reading books & i definitely watched a lot of youtube hahaha
