Hi, before I ask my question, I would like to say that your college videos were super helpful for getting me through high school and I feel that because of the help I received from those videos I am able to say Stanford Class of 2023!!! Anyway, I was wondering if you still write creatively/for fun. Also, how's the literary scene at Stanford, if you know anything about it at all? Thanks once again for everything!

literary scene at stanford…….there’s like a few magazines like leland quarterly, pulse, static, topiary, there’s the newspaper the stanford daily. there’s also a fashion magazine called mint? the creative writing department is also always putting on readings and events that are really cool!!

Hey! So I'm a high schooler hoping to major in English Lit in college and was hoping to submit to some lit mags/competitions. I was wondering which lit mags you know of/which published your poetry when you were a high schooler? Love your creative writing process videos on yt by the way - if it has changed since you made that video, maybe you could make an update? Thank you so so much in advance!!

i’m not sure if all of these are still active anymore but i published stuff in glass kite anthology, polyphony hs, textploit, scholastic art & writing is a great competition....and thanks!!

what are your thoughts on cs106a? also how many units do you recommend a freshman takes?

106a is not a breeze of a class! don’t expect to be on the same level as people who already have experience with cs! the checkmark grading system is super confusing but also matters more than you’d think! it’s like it can be a fun class but also maybe consider not taking it frosh fall with 700 other frosh who very likely will. and don’t take 106b just bc you feel like it’s the logical next step! take b if you want to major in it. that’s why it’s in the cs core. 12-15?

Same '22 admit: I live in Silicon Valley and whenever anyone asks, I always say I'm gonna do CS, but I'm not sure if it's what I want or the byproduct of being here, esp. since I'm also super interested in philosophy/writing/poly sci. Have you found that Stanford culture supports CS/STEM more? I'm worried that if I go, I'll end up in STEM no matter what because of Silicon Valley's intense valuation of it and my apparent susceptibility to buying into that/following the herd, instead of exploring

ooooooo this is so real lmao so yeah stanford culture definitely makes it easier to be a stem major but i actually really like being more of a humanities student! the classes here are really fun & there’s lots of people that are really passionate about it. honestly being exposed to stanford culture for so long has kinda turned me off to being cs just bc it seems like kind of a dull existence & i guess that’s never really been the kind of lifestyle i want to have…….totally depends on lots of factors though & over time i’ve realized that i’m in a very privileged position to be able to think this way

Hi Eleni! I was just admitted to Stanford and I'm super excited :D I'm also trying to make sure Stanford is the best fit of my options before committing. One question I have: some of your videos show you pulling all-nighters, and that's something I've literally never been able to do in HS, no matter how busy I was (literally physically could not do it). Are all-nighters common at Stanford? Or necessary to keep apace with all the other amazing, high-achieving kids and opportunities there? thanks!

i mean it definitely depends on which classes you take but i think all the all-nighters i’ve pulled have just been because i put things off a lot & not because i was really that busy that i didn’t have time to do it earlier. if you manage your time i definitely wouldn’t say they’re necessary!

So I used to have a Russian friend who had a pretty thick accent and like a lot of Russians tended to eschew articles. She would say things like “Get in car.” And stuff.

Well one day this asshole who had been kind of tagging along with us asks her why she talks like that because it makes her sound dumb and I still remember her response word for word.

“Me? Dumb? Maybe in America you have to say get in THE car because you are so stupid that people might just get in random car, but in Russia we don’t need to say that. We just fucking know because we are not stupid.”

One time I was proof reading a paper for a Russian student. As I was correcting her paper with her, the many mistakes in her grammar started weighing on her. I asked her what was wrong, and she said, almost sobbing,

“In Russian I am so intelligent and clear. In English I am like [an] idiot”

Respect to anyone trying to master a foreign language. I get so sad thinking about that student.

Full offense but people who make fun of someone else’s accent or belittle their limited vocabulary when they’re speaking a language not native to them are fucking disgusting and are just begging to be punched.

They’re speaking your language because you don’t know theirs. That’s not something they should be made fun of, it’s something that should be commended because learning a language is hard fucking work.

I hate people who do this so much.
