happy pride month!! this month we’re honouring love, and what better to represent love than the heart! so today we tackle the cardiovascular system, or more specifically, the cardiac cycle.

topics I hope to have down pat by the end of today:

1) pressures of the ventricles, atriums, aorta and pulmonary artery during systole and diastole

2) the four heart sounds and the stage of the cycle they correspond to

3) timeline of SLV and AVV closure/opening

4) general sequence of cardiac cycle and their respective duration

once I'm done: skin care time- then off to bed :) happy pride month, once again!

biochem today~

i’ve been meaning to tackle this fella for a while now, and today i’ve decided to suck it up and get down to it! so i’ll be getting into enzymology today and while i usually make notes by hand, i’ll be choosing to make slides instead. less time wasted!

today we tackle physiology!

on the agenda we have:

going through the slides of ‘introduction to physiology’

reading up on gastrointestinal hormones

studying hours: open

anterior compartment of leg tidbit

*slaps top of the leg like a car salesman* roight what’ve we got here, laddies? 

the shin, that’s right. 

did you know that there’s a condition dedicated to us medico first years? ‘Fresher’s Syndrome’ is so named bc it tends to occur in new med students or army recruits: bottom of the food chain, made to run around at the beck and call of any and everyone with even the tiniest bit of seniority.

all that running makes us overuse the muscles of our anterior compartment (namely -- in order of medial to lateral --  tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus, peroneus tertius) causing them to swell up in the tight compartment.

 venous return is disrupted

accumulation of fluid in compartment occurs

pressure in the compartment increases and anterior tibial artery gets compressed

reduces blood flow to the muscles

causes ischaemia (lack of blood supply) and pain

so expect pain -- the emotional and physical kind -- sooner or later :)
