"Vermillion" A very lengthy way to ask someone whether they will remember you (love you) after death, will it be a question or a request.
Context: I asked my friend about Roland's vital fluid's color, and they answered vermillion, thus the color, it's not his canonical vital fluid color btw. And whether the vital fluid was Roland's will depends on your perspective ヽ(〃･ω･)ﾉ (but i like anything range from red to purple a lot so I'm biased //smack)

SPOILERS FOR A NEW DIVIDE/CH.19 IF YOU HAVENT PLAYED IT SKIP AHEAD
sits down. can we talk about roland.
he spent [checks notes] 4 entire chapters of the story running around and following vonnegut, doing everything he said just to find out where luna is
at first glance the og ascendant group (luna/alpha/roland/lamia/gabriel) really does seem like they just exist together because they have a common goal, except for luna and alpha because [waves hands], but you think "oh i guess they dont really care for each other, right?" this gets reinforced when lamia leaves roland without a second thought twice, when roland and alpha take down gabriel
and then it turns out, the reason why roland was looking for luna all this time, why he goes all the way to the moon, i just to see her again, and give her a chance to live. admitting that his existence at this point only makes sense if luna also has something worth living for. alpha trusts him that he will do the right thing and deliver the drive that she asks him to give, because he knows that there is no luna without lucia and vice versa
maybe im going insane. at this point it's clear to me that the bond between alpha, luna and roland is above the ascnet, and that they are just looking out for each other, and it makes me want to rip my heart out
roland went through an incredible character development between fake ascension and evernight beat, going from just being the comic relief villain to a fully developed morally gray character that is neither good nor bad, and that character development blossoms in evernight beat and a new divide, where yes he does cause chaos on purpose, but he still always tries to make sure everyone *even the enemy* is safe and it makes me go ballistic. i need to hit kuro game on the head with a hammer
this makes no sense im just rambling incomprehensibly atp but like. do you get it do you fucking get it. am i losing my mind
NO, cuz you're so right. And I'm not the kind of person who usually to discuss plot (cuz I can't read for shit) but hey it's about Roland (a pseudo appreciation post, I guess) //post include spoilers and stupid dissection +theorizing!
I started playing on inspcription of labyrinth and with the hidden stories with Lamia joining Roland just to leave then later in the end, accompanied with some info summary from a friend, I was being so sure that "oh the ascendants probably doesn't care that much about each other, they just share a common goal to destroy babylonia or whatever," and it's been implied. And I have lived under the impression that Roland and Alpha is in bad term and that she's been beating him up multiple times (which is very much not true) since, again, they don't appear like they care about each other and Roland looks like he spends about 80% of his time just messing things up for people for fun.
Then the act they pulled up and Voodoo going along with it had me cakling,
"unexpected" my ahh he's been leaving clues for Alpha to follow (the rabbit origami) It's like they had been having this plan all along, even tho there's no point that it was discussed.
(not me thinking that Alpha was gonna beat him up or something) But she just entrust him with the device, that he'll bring it to her sister. That device is clearly important, and Alpha could just go there herself, but she trusts Roland to deliver it for her and cover up the rest.
It's quite hard for me to find again but it seems that although Luna appear to be the superior, Roland is just serving her the entire time and it's implied at the beginning of the story, something of just an underling that does her bidding; but during fallen star (yes, that early, I didn't expect it too), Luna was actively looking out for Roland (iirc he got his ass kicked, as he usually does) So it's hard to not say that they have developed something of an unspoken trust(?) from time to time? idk how people say it, but I think they'll get it, these three care for each other more than they appear (also Luna even gave Lamia free legs after she asked to be taller lmao they all care about each other)
Anyway, honestly the entirety of Roland's journey to the moon was actually a good look into how he has become as a character, especially after we are getting more and more glimpses of what he thinks as he acts (we didn't got a whole lot of that before)
I also really love how we get to have to see the way Roland evaluating the situation when given the choice, "a morally grey character who's neither good nor bad" is a good way to define the role he plays in the whole thing, like what would a character whose role is to push/motivate the main casts into making a decision, like, what would a character like that in a story think.
These two lines is implying something like, he may not have a genuine sibling on his own to feel what it's like to live for someone he loved like a family (or not anymore) but Luna does and she wishes to build a world where she can live happily with Lucia, and he exists to see that happen. And I think Vonnegut knows that either way, Roland will give Luna a chance to live.
Roland is something of a messenger, when given a task, he will get it done, that includes releasing the stem into the system of the babylonia lunar base. Like at least he make a use out of what's given and create chaos out it (and honestly I find it so fucking funny).
Also a thing to note is that Roland wants Luna to wake up and keep living, and I'm not sure if this is intentional to further his characteristic or it's just a writing choice, but Roland was planning on shooting the omega weapon and break it, then he put his gun down, saying that it might accelerate her death,
I'm thinking that he refrained because that would make him directly involve in the process, and that's against his character/role's rule as the messenger. Idk, that might not be it, I'm looking like this when I arrange this post, it's hard calling me normal lmaooo
But istg dissecting him as a character is so fun, I'm not sure how other feels but I love to conclude whatever he does with "maybe, he could be doing either things," he think one thing in his head and does the other, sometime even both if he felt like the illusion of an audience would laugh at that behavior (I'm reading too deep into him-)
And to conclude this ramble, I would like to point out that for a character who's known for smiling and grinning for about 90% of the time, Roland's expression range in CG is various, and that plays a lot cuz we could just assume that when he was not smiling, he's being genuine, but then again playing pretend is a thing he's good at, so it's hard to tell when he was just fucking around or is he saying something true to his feelings,
but I have a feeling that this whisper to Luna at the end was genuine. He's serious; and I have a theory that it could be what Alpha wants to say to Luna as well (although I don't think a brief moment of interaction between Roland and Alpha is enough for a sentence like this), and it's sprouting from his personal experience as someone's so lost with who he truly is for a very long time. The "true self" holds some sort of impact. But that's just a theory, just so if it sounds delusional then it's just a mean to not being taken too seriously!
