Since he'd gotten to the cabin, Donnie made it his top priority to keep himself distracted. Which, wasn't too hard considering his baby's condition upon arrival. With his mind a jumbled mess, he'd done the only thing he knew how to do best: Donnie tinkered. Â After parking in the single car garage beside the cabin, he'd stripped of some layers and got to work. The damage could have been worse. Sure, he'd still have to get her repainted, but at least the majority of the work he could manage himself. Rolling up his sleeves, he cranked on his radio, wheeling himself under the vehicle and humming along with the lyrics. The man had gotten lost in his activities, stopping only when the sun was setting behind storm clouds in the horizon, a downpour of rain richochetting off the tin roof above. Wiping the grease off on his jeans and the the sweat from his brow, his gaze fell over the car before him. Most of the dent was removed from the now sanded front, the engine and everything internal on the machine getting a clean bill of health. Yeah, it was definitely time for a break.Â
"I wonder if Mom left some sweet tea in the fridge last time they came down." He spoke out loud, a lop sided smirk grazing his features. Â "Who am I kidding? 'Course she did."
Besides the car he'd just slaved over for hours, this cabin was the only thing the man outright owned. The only other material possession he could call his own. Growing up, his parents had struggled to make ends meet to keep the beloved refuge, the secluded place like a second home to the large family. It hadn't gotten any easier when the children left the nest, and when Donnie heard about them possibly loosing it, he'd purchased it without a second thought only a few years into his military service. They still came back here, his parents. The cabin had brought them just as much joy as it did for himself, and the duo had only just left from their weekend get away last week. Back then, he'd bought it with foolish dreams of the future in his head. Now- well now- it had turned into nothing but a place for refuge. As abundant as the joyful memories were everywhere around him, there were just as many unpleasant ones. At least he still had the secluded little place, and merely shrugged to himself as the thoughts swam around in his mind. If anything, he had a place to retire in the future: grey, senile, and fishing nightly at the lake, whether he caught anything or not.Â
With the promise of cooling off on the porch, watching the rain fall as he chugged a glass of the cold liquid, Donnie made his way outside the large open doors in front of him. He didn't get far, however, stopping just in the frame as his eyes focused on the figure in the distance. Even from a dozen yards away, Donnie would always know her. Rain, snow, a stadium full of hundreds of people- it never would take him long to spot her. Donnie made his way out, each step heavy as lead, body shaking more from conflicting emotions then the chilled rain. He was still pissed as hell, his grinding teeth proof of that, but now there was more. Guilt was still in the forefront of his mind, no matter how much he tried to push it away, telling himself it wasn't his fault. Stronger still, was relief and worry. He knew she'd come back, though deep down his doubt was strong this time, and couldn't be happier that his instincts had been spot on. What the hell did she think she was doing, standing in the rain like that? Did she want to catch pneumonia Their gaze locked as he made his way over to her, gently rapping an arm around her shoulder and silently pulling her back towards the garage. She'd been crying, eyes red and puffy, the rain only hiding the tears as they mixed.Â
"What the hell were you doing just sitting out there?" He croaked out, making his way to his trunk and grabbing the blanket he kept there, fanning it out before draping it gently over her shoulders. After giving her arms a few rubs, he leaned back against the hood, arms crossing over his chest.Â
No, you don’t and it always leads to you getting into trouble. I know you’re not, Don, just reckless when emotional. *chuckles* I said I needed you around here, didn’t I? *sigh* Yes. Charlotte Sheffield is missing, one of the kids in her class said they saw her walking out the west gate but we can’t find her on any security videos. Yea, Daphne. Any idea what the hell happened Donnie?
Yeah well- trouble might as well be my middle name, right? Reckless when emotional? Y-you really think that, huh? I really try, Mick. I try with the temper and the- and the- *shakes head, sighs* I just try, alright? You know that. Yeah, yeah you did. You're gonna make me think I'm irreplaceable yanno. Charlotte- you mean Charlie? Well ah- last I heard from her- she was hot and heated with Dais- Daphne. I um- kind of blew up over it and- No! I just- I need to go Mick, alright? I don't want to talk about it anymore. And how the hell am I supposed to know? I'm gonna go-
You've reached the voicemail of Michael Gale, headmaster at Walter University. Please leave a message after the beep, and I will return your call in a timely manner. Thank you. - Beepppp-
Hey Mick, it's me. Listen I- when I said I had to go, I meant it. You know when things come crashing down on me, I've just got to get away. I'll try not to be long. I'm sorry, I just- I can't deal with all this anymore alright? I'll give you a call back later.
LOCATION: → His lil' place, and to his refuge spot
GENERAL NOTES: → Him not happy
He was sick of it all. Somewhere in Donnie's mind, he snapped. Whether it was when Dai- no- Daphne- knocked him to the ground, or perhaps when she'd slammed his leg between the bathroom door: he didn't know. Somewhere during the barrage of blows he'd welcomed, Donnie had simply given up. He'd given the woman a few minutes after her words faded away before pulling himself, and whatever pride he had left, off the ground. As he cleaned himself up, admiring the blow the blonde had landed square in the center of his nose, her words echoed repeatedly in his mind.Â
Donald, you did the one thing you knew would hurt me the most-you called me Daphne.
Just the simple fact that you let me be in your life meant everything. I’ve always done whatever you asked me to. I never said no. I’ve always been Daphne Douchard, trying to prove to you that I could be Daisy.
All I know is the Donald from ten years ago, the one I’m still in love with. I don’t want to let him go because somewhere, somehow, I convinced myself he loved me too.
With a growl, Donnie brought his fist down on the sink, trying his best to keep his frame steady as pain shot through his limb. With every loop of those words in his head, his decision became clearer in the consistent fuzziness of his mind. He was just so done with everything. He'd felt guilty for ten god damn years, and try as hard as he could, he wasn't fixing things as fast as the woman wanted. She'd said she wasn't good enough for him, but the pretty little fool was too blind to see that he was, in fact right: he wasn't good enough for her. Everything he'd done, and tried since finding out she was there, had merely gone up in smoke. He couldn't do anything right.Â
And then his damn jealousy and temper had gotten away with him, and as the images flashed through his mind, he brought his fist down again. If she would have just let him talk, or perhaps if he'd stepped in a few minutes earlier before she'd- he couldn't even think about it, shaking his head back and forth. After that, he'd been so angry, and anything said went in one ear and out the other. Strike yet another point against him. No! Donnie decided he wasn't going to feel guilty anymore, and sure as hell wouldn't feel low. He'd set his foot down, and decided he'd do what was right for her, no matter the cost. She wanted to say goodbye, than that was fine. He wasn't going to stick around anymore.
With that, he packed up a few duffel bags: shoving the wads of cash he'd saved over the years in one, and clothes in another. He was done trying to be perfect for her, trying to move at a pace much faster than what he could accommodate. Everything he'd done these past years had been for her! The military had been his only option, with limited funds and all, and he'd hoped it would make him respectable in her family's eyes. Not that it did Donnie any good. He still was nothing but a commoner in her father's eyes, never amounting to anything good enough for his baby girl. As much as they both would like to think she was nothing like him, deep down she was. Things weren't going the way she'd visioned them, and he didn't know what to do anymore. Donnie didn't know what made her happy.
As he yanked open one last drawer, a sarcastic huff escaped his lips. Donnie pulled out the little box he'd tucked away, looking at it with distaste. He knew what was inside: Daphne's grandmother's ring. A pretty, dainty (compared to his fingers, that is) little emerald ring, with diamonds along the edge. Her mother had given it to him years ago, declaring that the blonde had always pined after the ring. She'd simply said that, when the time was right, some day it might come in handy. After all, the stone was the same hue as his eyes. Back then, almost all the stones had been lose, and the frame had been bent in every direction imaginable. Now, it shone brightly, and he'd payed out the ass to get the heirloom back in near mint shape. For years the woman's words were his motivators: some day. Jotting a quick note on some scratch paper, he left it by the box on his dresser, knowing it would get back to her eventually. At least he'd done a good thing.
Looking around his little place, he hoisted the duffels over his shoulders with a nod. He needed to go away for a while, after all, it was for the best. What Donnie needed most was fresh air, peace and quiet, and the lack of a razor. If anyone needed him, they knew how to reach him. Instinctively, he reached in his pocket, checking to make sure his cell phone sat there comfortably. Mick would be ticked for a while, but he wouldn't stay mad long. As for her- well, he wouldn't sink into those feelings again. He made a mental reminder to give the man a call later on that night, and ease his mind. Anyone that mattered knew where he ran off to for solace, if they absolutely needed him. Tossing his things in the back of baby, he started the engine and let it roar, revving it a few times before squealing down the road in a whirl of dust and Zeppelin.Â
Leave my mother out of this! I am not my mother, nor am I my father. I’m Daphne, just as you’ve stated. I’m Daphne Douchard, Daisy died along with the us that never existed.
Don’t you ever breath anything of my mother again.
[scoffs] Don’t talk to me about love, Donald. You think you’re the only one that’s scared? I’ve been terrified since the beginning. Only now I’m numb. Every guy was always measured against you and none of them could ever compete. I got sick of feeling so empty when I was with you-I just wanted a moment to remember what it was like to feel. If you don’t bother making a move, then you have no right to ridicule me or anyone who decides to do so. I don’t belong to you!
Italy, huh? That's right- run away. Taking some tips from me, are you?
I can talk about your mother all I want! Your mother was an amazing woman who was her own person. She didn't let others dictate who she was, or who she was supposed to be. Us that never existed If you weren't so pig headed you wouldn't have ran off and let me finish talking to you. Since she's gone now, guess what I was gonna say doesn't matter anymore.
That's fine. Go ahead, hit me all you want. I ain't gonna hit back. C'mon, is that all you got?
That's right, Daphne. Make this all about you once again. You know- it takes two for things like this to work out. That's the thing, you never think I don't feel those things. You never think that I was scared, or- or maybe I didn't know what the fuck I was getting into. HELL woman, you never, and I guess still don't, think I ever cared. Comparing to me, huh? I'd say I'm not good enough, but you've already proven that haven't you? Why should I? You tell me? I'm done trying to explain myself and my actions to you. Done. You never listen anyways. So no- I'm not making a move. Not until you realize how much of a ditzy, stuck-up, spoiled little bitch you're being.Â
This is true, you think maybe you should? *shakes head* You ever were a creature of habit and ritual. Just try not to get yourself killed, huh? I need you around here; otherwise it’s just me and two crazy females. Of course I worry, I have you in the hospital, a missing TA and another teacher seems to have flipped a switch. There’s a lot on my plate right now.
Do I ever? *grins* Yeah I am, but that's how I like things. You know I don't do change very well. Stop with that, will you? I didn't mean it, and it wasn't on purpose. I ain't suicidal and all that crap. Yeah, you do need me around here don't you? A missing TA? Teacher who's flipped a switch? That would be Daphne. Just gonna warn you now, she's lookin for you. Wants to bail. Yeah- I wouldn't wanna be you right now.
That’s correct, which is why I’m still here-I must give Michael proper time to find a replacement.
Please do watch your language, Donald. I understand not all of us were brought up the way I was, but I…ain’t trying to fool anyone.
Proper time to find a replacement? Yeah, like you'll be going anywhere.Â
Watch my language? Sorry, princess, I didn't realize that bothered you. Never bothered you in the past, or did you forget that person when you shoved that stick up your ass? You aren't a lady. A lady doesn't belittle another human being. Sounds a lot like Daddy Dearest, doesn't it? Your mother would be real proud, you know that? You're nuthin' but a snobby, spoiled little rich girl, you realize that right? You've changed into the very kind that wouldn't have given me the time of day. Whatever. I'm not putting up with this shit. The girl I loved apparently is gone, and this one- *laughs* I want nothing to do with. Go run home to Daddy, Daphne.Â
No, you don’t but maybe you will now. After all, if you had listened to me you wouldn’t have to do more work on her. *sigh* No, I don’t think you’d do it on purpose, I just think that maybe your head wasn’t really on straight and that worries me. I’ve got enough shit that I’m stressing over right now, I don’t want to have to worry about you killing yourself inadvertently in the process, you got it?
I never listen to you, that's why you always have to help me out somehow. We've got a routine down, would hate to break that. You're right, my head wasn't on straight. *laughs* Really? Kill myself inadvertently That's rich, Mick. You worry too much, man. I can handle myself, no need to stress or worry over me, got it?
