DISRUPTED MODERNISM (PT. II)
Disrupted Modernism - Jacob Waas
University of Illinois at Chicago (Jimenez Lai)
“Disrupted Modernism” captures an agitated glitch in the perceived perfection of the idealized institution for salaried men and women. For a moment in time, a cluster of soft parts replaces the hard, stacked floors of a modernist building. The soft clusters are squeezed and pressed into the existing framework of a building constructed on a 3x5 bay, the “golden ratio”, perfect in proportion. Moreover, the stark black façade projects a sense of importance for the idealized institutions that occupy it. In this case, the façade remains; projecting its image to the world while underneath the once idealized typical plan for the institution is traded for a more uneven arrangement of space. Thus, a moment of disruption is inflected onto a world that is striving to obtain perfection. The 9 to 5 day, however, must go on. The lives of the idealized individuals must at least attempt to live up to the projected perfection of the exterior facade. Meetings may be a bit frustrating, coffees will be spilled and the file room could feel like a bottomless pit, but do not worry; the break room still exists.
