its literally like. they set up these characters. but rather than retconning and rewriting they just pasted new characters with the same faces over those existing characters, then try to convince you this was always the plan

My biggest problem with how Hoyo's been writing the Fatui female harbingers as of late is a sheer lack of acknowledgment for their previously written flaws or the unintentional flaws that came from trying to make them look like better people.

I can't empathize with Sandrone's grief because she shows zero remorse for attempting to colonize Nod Krai or for how she manipulated the pains of the Scions to achieve her goals. The one who cut a mans tongue out, mocked her so called friends funeral, the one who was consistently characterized as a hermit with a terrible personality that has now very clearly been changed with one example being Arlecchino’s stupid new voice line on the Marionette that feels so forced and doesn’t even make sense. This is not acknowledged at all.

I can't empathize with Columbina's loneliness or pain of being used because she smiled and sung at her friends funeral and sat by idly as the Fatui were committing numerous war crimes and the fact that in order to make her sympathetic, Hoyo had to demonize a group of Indigenous people. That they make fun of fans such as with her new tabletop outfit while acting the Traveler of all people is her greatest connection while Lauma has to pick up the pieces. This is not acknowledged.

I can't empathize with the far more human aspects of Arlecchino because her children are dying out in other nations and being groomed to only ever follow the path of a soldier, something that will keep happening so long as Arlecchino is in control alongside the Fatui. This is never acknowledged because at least she's better then Crucubena.

The sheer lack of self awareness from Hoyo ends up making these women fake as hell and that would be so interesting to explore- it would be so cool to analyze the complex and often misogynistic two faced personas women have to take in positions of corrupt power and the sacrifice of morality to survive it. How women can stick together out of solidarity, but then throw each other under the bus because they believe they have too.

How even the worst of people can still hold on to morals and it’s always impressive when they do.

But we got to remember, Hoyo hates nuance so.

sorry to reblog ur tags but YEAH EXACTLY!! it drives me crazy when people say that hoyoverse has never retconned or pivoted a character before release when both Arlecchino and Sandrone (and arguably Columbina) have all CLEARLY been changed when they were made playable. hm! weird that it only seems to happen to the female harbingers. even happening to Signora posthumously. i guess now that everything is Dottore's fault its okay.
