birthday request (7/7/2026)

My birthday's coming up again, and I thought I'd make another request! If you've got a AU for your XIV characters, I'd love to see a photo of it!(open to everyone, vanilla gposers and screenshot mods alike!)

I am shocked and pleased to announce Mars won Eorzea Weekly's 'Magazine Cover' theme!

Honestly didn't think he stood a chance against the other really amazing entries that week, but talk about Brumerat charm (which he has no idea he has and doesn't understand wtf it is)

Did this purely vanilla and then assembled on Canva (this was the like, idek, 14th or 15th iteration coz I couldn't make up my mind and kept looking at examples on Pinterest; hats off to all the actual layout artists and editors who do this regularly for an actual living)

I love the idea the artist was a rushed lala doing a commission and thought they'd just about got all the towers in before the deadline and then ran their eyes over the skyline for one last look and saw a HUGE obvious missing dome they'd just completely glossed over and already painted sky there and everything... Hastily scribbled dome it will have to be!

An Ask (of Sorts?)

Hmm, being courageous in a rather passive way, but... lately I've been itching to ask so many folks what led them to their NPC WoLship(s) of choice. So in the interest of efficiency and not at all because I'm too cowardly to drop this in most of your boxes without prompting, this is... I suppose a blanket ask for anyone who reads it?

Please kindly tell me the reasoning behind your chosen WoLship(s)? However much you're comfortable sharing would be great! No amount of detail is too little... but the more the better! (Please ramble—I'm actually begging.) As open format as you like, but here are some specific questions I always wonder about to serve as something of a starting point, if needed?

Why did that specific NPC (or group of NPCs) make your shipping brain go "bing" like a microwave?

Did it have anything to do with player preference?

Did your WoL (or non-WoL OC) grab you by the face and say, "Regrettably, they're the one(s)."

Was the decision immediate, or did you have to come around to the idea?

Did it feel like work to maneuver your personal canon so they fit together, or did it just evolve naturally?

Are they your sole ride-or-die OTP, or are there AUs/alternate storylines where your WoL falls in with someone else? If so, what made you curious to explore those other ships?

Alternately, for anyone who's chosen not to ship their WoL/OC with NPCs, why is that the case? Is it likewise player preference, or did your character hold up a giant sign with, "Absolutely not, thanks," scribbled on it when you tried?

If your WoLship is with another OC, what made them a better fit than any of the NPCs? Could your WoL have connected with an NPC if not for that OC's presence in their life?

I'm curious about platonic ships, too! (Those are often my favorites!) Whatever you consider the most pivotal or poignant connection(s) forged between NPC and WoL, be it friendship, familial, mentorship, rivalry, and/or so forth! What made that connection stand out so much that it's essential for your WoL's lore?

Oh, and um, please answer (if you so choose) however you prefer: new post with tag, comment, hashtags, reblog, ask (anonymous or not), separate post with zero connection to this one because you'd rather keep it to yourself, etc. etc! Truthfully... I might panic and fail to engage regardless. But I promise I will devour the information like a little Kirby (the pink one, although I suppose the vacuum works here, too) and leave not the slightest crumb, because hearing everyone's personal lore gives me giant anime sparkle eyes, like /wow!

nothing beats the 5am, sleepy-yet-can't-sleep-for-unfathomable-reasons ramblings about pixel dolls so here goes (absolutely cut for the incessant yapping*)

*are you kidding me, it's 5.22am on a workday and I only went to bed at 2am; the nonsense is unmitigated unrestrained uncontrolled, and I will make my narrative a part of your scroll whenever you see this on tumblr, even if it's just this ridiculous preamble):

So... to set the scene, I have no WoL/NPC ships, and the reasons why probably boil down to two things: 1) my FFXIV ships are Aymeric with Lucia and Erenville with myself, and 2) my self-insert hasn't met the fussy little bunbun officially.

...okay maybe there're four things.

3) I basically haven't finished a firsthand playthrough of the game (I already embarrass my friends with my utter lack of progress in this MMORPG* so I won't tell you how far I've not gotten). Thus I suppose you could say my WoL hasn't really 'met' anyone they want to romance.

*the first M now stands for Mammoth

4) I say my WoL, but honestly? Not a single one of these little jokers I created is the universe-saving, apocalypse-cancelling WoL. They're the vehicles through which I find out what's happened to the world and universe they inhabit, but none of them have grown powerful enough to face the gods, then Gods, and then The Actual God Behind It All At The End of the Universe and was handed stewardship (haha, no, of course not - unless...?) of the entire galaxy. So in my head, very few of them run across the NPCs that the WoL connects with.

5) Not even the obligatory Self Insert is the WoL. She's a semi-aggro, fed up Hyur adventurer from That Part of Nagxia Under Deep Cloud Cover who swears in the FFXIV equivalent of Cantonese when she travels for profit and to get away from her hometown no one's ever heard of. (...come to think of it, even if/when she meets Erenville, I'm not sure that's so much a ship as it is a child's paper boat that falls over halfway across a puddle)

6) WAIT I FORGOT, I DO HAVE AN NPC SHIP

7) It's Self Insert x That One Viera Omikujishi What Only Shows Up Every Heavensturn (why? Coz look at him. He's so very hot - and so very unavailable)

She flirts with him every year and every year, it never works.

(...I think Self-Insert may have a thing for Viera men*. Huh, go figure.)

*I say while playing mostly Elezen. Life's funny that way.

8) Alright fine, jokes aside, closest to NPC relationships I can name is my Ishgardian girl Oudine taking up machinist/shooting lessons with Stephanivien at Skysteel, and a cordial acquaintance with Aymeric since she's supposed to be attending meetings at the House of Lords as head of her house. I suppose in other circumstances, I'd have shipped her with him or Haurchefant*, but by the time I got to them, someone else had already established themselves with Oudine in my head.

(Only on Halloween I guess LMAO)

* I did have a vague idea that had I started my FFXIV experience differently, I'd have had Oudine and Haurchefant engaged to be married and after he dies, have her develop a vendetta against the WoL for being a contributing cause of his death. Unreasonable? Entirely. Villain origin story? Hell yeah.

7) That someone used to be a lovely Au Ra named Hatou who got sidelined so fast, I only have screenshots from 2025:

He was supposed to meet Oudine.

8) And then this asshole (affectionate) showed up:

Mars Rainteau was NOT supposed to have this much main character energy. He was just supposed to be part of the supporting cast. One day, out of sheer curiosity, I messed around in the character creator to see what he looked like - and my friends all went "WHO IS THAT" and I was like "what"

And then, because who am I to deny the appeal, he came alive i.e. I made him in game.

And then, Oudine went "...I kinda like him" and Mars went "I like her" and I went "what", then my friend suggested they have a complicated backstory, and my other friend drew a Most Beautiful thing.

And then, a sort of process ensued which I think is best represented by an imaginary conversation that went something like this:

Me: Didn't you tell me you were asexual?? Mars: Yeah but not aromantic. Me: Mars: Ace and aro usually go together but not all the time. Me: Okay then what's YOUR deal? Oudine: I've ranged from ace to demisexual from the very beginning - and I've known Mars for years. Me: Mars: Keep up. Oudine: Happy Pride!

So now they have a complicated backstory, and current Very Slow Burn, thanks to the character creator, external approval and me being a pushover in terms of story decisions and character choices.

9) AUs with alternate pairs include:

The Sharlayan AU - because one highly indulgent friend and I jumped into Gpose for 6 hours and I still wanted my Au Ra ship dammit

The actor AU - because that same benevolent friend allowed the impossible: a one in a trillion chance bubble where her boy can actually comprehend a romance with a woman, much less be an active, willing participant

(Also coz the characters got married for tax benefits)
