Safe House: Voices from the cutting season

In a comic format, the Toronto Star presents a graphic comic about a safe house in Tanzania that offers sanctuary to girls fleeing female genital mutilation (and child marriage) during the December cutting season.

Poignant, compelling, and truthful.  Talented Story artist Daniel Lafrance has collaborated with Toronto Star journalist Marc Ellison in this brilliant and progressive journalistic adventure.

Our talented story artist and 2014 'Eisner Award' nominee for graphic novel album ('War Brothers') Daniel Lafrance, is embarking on an admirable collaboration with journalist Marc Ellison for an online comic, for one of Canada's highest-circulation newspaper the 'Toronto Star'.

Daniel wrote: "Today (Feb 6) is the United Nations International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).  To mark the day, here's the cover and a 2 page preview for a 30 page online comic for the Toronto Star I'm doing with the journalist Marc Ellison on the subject of FGM and forced marriage to young girls in Tanzania.  FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women.  United Nation's website on the subject:
