Surprisingly funny and less reactionary than I thought it would be. I was also ready for them to take two whole specials just for this, but no, they managed to wrap up everything by the end. I am an anti Cartman redemptionist however so I didn't like that he actually learned his lesson in the end. The best special by far I would say.

Last rant aside S26E04 was good. Best in the season thus far imo. Had been a while since south park elicited sincere laughter from me and I felt like the pacing worked because they stuck to their guns and expanded their basic premise. It was more centered than Cupid yew ep and had better closure as result.

Kept building unto the joke of AI generated text within the context of the boys cheating their essays +Stan and Wendy's relationship but finding ways around making new jokes about it and expanding instead of relying on the 1 gag repeating throughout the episode with a some semblance of a plotline thrown in there at the last 5 min like toilet episode.

When Cartman shouted at the kid to get out! I legit thought they were just going to go through the same scene again lol. There's a lot of ways the premise could've gone that could've resulted in a mediocre episode. I can very well see them having the gag of submitting AI text loop through the episode as the punchline of the situation(picture branching away from stan and showing a montage of people using it at every level of society, same joke different setting/application) but it was used in an expository fashion to move the plot between stan and wendy forward which allowed them to exploit their remaining screentime with derivative ideas.

It's not complex stuff but failing at this bare minimum tends to be modern south park's biggest undoing in succeeding at both being funny and also immersing you in a situation involving characters and it makes the difference in entertainment value like day and night imo

we oughta make AI shit a permanent implementation in the south park writers room maybe it'll get them inspired me thinks

South Park Post Covid Special: Character thoughts

So yeah. The boys are finally grown up and they are miserable. At least Kyle and Stan. Very fanfic, very nice. I think both Kyle and Stan fit their 'bad end' current life. Kyle giving consultancies to try to solve everyone's problems and stuck in South Park and single. Stan left South Park and became an alcoholic having an Alexa he yells at but keeps anyways; specially after what we are told happened it makes total sense. Token and Clyde are also very in character. Jimmy did go back in his values, but that's how the world works when you need to make money so it's fine. We don't know much about Wendy, Craig and Tweek to make an assessment imo. Craig seems more assertive and bald. His character model being just his dad but not fat and with black hair makes me want to slap whatever artist was in charged of that.

Now the big ones. I will just copy paste something I said before to friends: Kenny is still used just as a plot device for the show. His whole deal also repeats the libertarian story of 'poor person works hard and becomes self made man' that I'm sorry but in this economy? That's pure bullshit.

We know his elementary education sucked

He never showed an interest in science or academics in general

Even if we accept Kenny was a secret math genius that just kept it hidden, and that later he got full scholarship to a good uni he would have to still find a way to sustain himself and likely his sister would have to juggle studies and work

After the scooter episode I believed they finally got Kenny's character. Yeah he is poor and a perv but he is also the most emotional intelligent in the group. But they needed time travel so he is a quantum physicist now. Yeah yeah people change and all, but he is a cartoon kid. We have had 23+ years of Kenny content and we know his traits: heroic, good hearted, goes with the flow, doesn't lead but likes it that way. I do think he always deserved a good ending out of all the boys, but he could have still done something that related to those traits instead of just being a plot device (again). Still him being a scientist all while being basically The Dude is the only way that fits if that's what they were going for. Now Cartman... I don't even want to talk about Cartman. Right now I see two ways. He is faking it or he is not faking it. If he is faking it then we got nothing and we have to wait until part 2 to find out who adult Cartman really is. If he is not faking it... Then this sucks I'm sorry. It is really funny but after the laughs all you are left with is an empty shell. What can you say here? Is just weird. I guess you can say there are Naazee skinheads that get reformed, but man, that's just not Cartman. Cartman isn't racist out of ignorance. Cartman is racist because its convenient to him. He makes fun of people to hide his insecurities, to feed his own ego, to explain his own delusional world where he is the center of everything. I don't buy this little ball of narcissism changed. Guess we have until Christmas to find out, huh?

South Park Post Covid Special review/analysis/rant

I should put all my thoughts on the episode in a cohesive post instead of ranting to my friends on discord so here it is:  Overall: Mixed. Great ideas, great jokes, some great character moments, but too bloated, bad political opinions (expected) and some big character wrongs.  I think the worst technical offences were the editing and the voice acting. Both fell off, lazier than usual. Scenes don't flow like they usually do and many scenes repeat information. We learn Kenny died from Kyle calling Stan and then also from Jimmy's show bit. A more stream lined version could have been: the scene with Jimmy to learn Kenny died, and that he was going to south park, it zooms out and we see Stan in his car watching how the show was cancelled, he is already on his way to SP. Instead of having the call and meet up, just have Stan and Kyle meet first in the funeral with everyone else. That's how Token joins them and there Wendy and the rest of Craig and those Guys learn about what they know without Token having to repeat himself. Speaking of the Craig gang + Wendy and husband: I love that finally after 20 years we got a CATG episode and Clyde, sweet dumbfuck, was perfect. The scene with Wendy and Clyde was *chefs kiss*. However, their B plot was completely useless. They are trying to find what Kenny hid, but they don't. In the end it was something Kyle and Stan knew on their own. I guess they set up Victor Chaos and the lab has the time machine they might use the next episode, but that's the next episode. I think this episode could have been trimmed to 40 minutes, give or take and it would have been funnier. Next post I will make even more controversial takes on the episode.

It’s such a South Park fandom phenomenon to aggrandize the limited amount of non-Randy based interaction actually shown, and, because of that very aggrandizment, write off the plot contrivances and improper development those character interactions were founded on.

Cartman and Kyle’s classroom brawl was neat, but could’ve been more impactful if tensions between the two (driven by the latter supporting school repopening within safety protocol and Cartman being the lazy antithesis) was given the time to really play out beyond the short, shown-in-previews snippet of conflict.

Stan’s arc follows the same process; rather than a more tangible struggle between his desire to be seen as strongwilled and his increasing anxieties of the pandemic environment that would lead to his projection of anxieties onto Butters, we’re instead shown the latter effect alone. Limited to few scenes where Stan’s dialogue as opposed to actions take the forefront, it’s a very told-not-shown writing style that makes for an unsatisfying conclusion.

All in all, there seems to be a modern South Park trend of acknowledging various interesting concepts without really taking the time to expand upon them to their fullest potential; a distinction that can take an alright episode and make it a great one.
