Sugar and Depression

Many doctors agree that the most damaging thing we can eat is sugar. It is a major cause of inflammation and studies show that individuals with inflammatory illnesses – autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer – often struggle with depression. Up to 70% of patients with autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus, experience depression.

The spiking of blood sugar followed by a crash can also increase the risk of depression, according to research by the National Institutes of Health. Interesting data shows that countries with high sugar intake also have a high rate of depression.

How many grams of sugar are you eating a day? Numbers can be very important, but few are more important to your preventive health than the number of grams of sugar you’re consuming each day. I say “grams” rather than “teaspoons” because you’re probably aware of how many teaspoons of sugar you put into your coffee or oatmeal, but you may not be mindful of the sugar you consume in bottled drinks and packaged food – and those show the amount of sugar in grams.

To convert grams into teaspoons, divide the number of grams by 4. For a drink that contains 39 grams of sugar (typical of one small 12-ounce can of soda), the equivalent is almost 10 teaspoons!

Dr. Terry Grossman, a doctor who is also my friend, a best selling author and one of the world’s leading anti-aging physicians, gave me a goal of no more than 15 to 20 grams of sugar a day. In order to avoid rapid glucose fluctuations in my bloodstream he recommended 5 or 6 grams at the end of each meal, rather than all 15 to 20 grams at one time.

I decided to aim for that six days a week. Sometimes I go over 20 grams; once in a blue moon I go under. On the seventh day, I allow myself a break by being gently aware of my sugar intake that day, but I don’t count grams. I normally don’t even take that break but it’s good for the soul to know that I have that freedom.

Ask your healthcare practitioner what your daily limit of sugar should be, and if you should count fresh fruit or not. I don’t count fruit as part of my maximum daily grams because the fiber in fresh fruit can mitigate the sugar (unlike juiced fruit which has the fiber extracted).  I also value the nutrients, vitamins and minerals. I do, however, limit my intake to avoid spikes in my blood sugar.

Imagine carrying around a huge, heavy backpack filled with things we don’t need or enjoy. We carry it for so long we forget it’s even there, and yet we wonder why our body is achy and tired.

Our incessant thoughts are like that – taking up so much of our vital energy – leaving us stressed out and exhausted. I’m not referring to the kind of thoughts used to solve a problem or contemplate beauty. I’m talking about the unintentional thoughts that seem to sweep us away, enticing us to worry about the future or regret the past. For many of us, those worrisome and regretful thoughts take up a good deal of our mental space. And they don’t feel good.

Research studies show that our thoughts stimulate emotions that trigger a rush of chemicals to our cells. Once a week change the position of the sticky note; otherwise your brain will tend to ignore it.

I Reversed Early Alzheimer’s

“Who are you?” my mother asked me again.

It was the third time in twenty minutes, and a regular ritual during my visits to the nursing home in the last months of her life in 1994.

Alzheimer’s. They say it’s hereditary. 

I remember thinking: is that what’s going to happen to me? Will I get Alzheimer’s too? Even if I manage to avoid that dreaded disease, will I deteriorate mentally and physically in other ways with age? Will I begin to lose strength and flexibility as my joints creak and my bones thin? Will I become set in my ways and inflexible in my thinking? Will I have to stay cooped up in the house, afraid of slipping and tripping? As I advance in years, will my mind become less clear, less sharp, until I can’t remember what day it is, who my children are, or even who I am?

It was five years after Mom died, when I was in my early 60s that the symptoms of early Alzheimer’s did enter my life. It started out as minor short-term memory losses and not being able to find words I wanted to say. Then it progressed to greater memory loss: I wouldn’t ask a question because I couldn’t remember if I had just asked it. And my tongue kept tripping on words.

It was extremely frightening. For me and my children. They insisted I go to the doctor for testing, but the test in the late 1990’s was a series of questions the doctor asked the patient like, “What year is it?” and “Who is president of the United States?”I aced them all but regardless: I knew my mind was deteriorating.

Then when I was 67 years old, I had a “wake-up call” and became aware of what I was doing to myself. Even through the fog of early Alzheimer’s, I began to realize that my thoughts and beliefs were creating a life for me that I did not want.

Who am I? My mother’s last words to me were more profound than I realized at the time. Even though I knew that I am a spiritual being experiencing life in a physical body, it wasn’t until ten years after her death that I became conscious that I have a choice about who I am going to be in this physical body in my later years. Let me say that once more. It’s a simple, quiet intention, but one that has made a world of difference to me: I choose how I will spend the rest of my life.

All my adult life I’ve searched and studied and applied the ancient esoteric secrets for creating the life I want. Why not, I realized, use that same wisdom to turn my back on Alzheimer’s and develop a program for a clear mind and strong body for the rest of my life? Why not think and grow young? Why not use the Law of Attraction and other age-reversing techniques to give me vitality, stamina, flexibility, love, creativity, exuberance, a sharp mind and a strong body?

Once I had a clear intention to reverse aging, the next step was to learn how. Soon a whole program, including youthfulness techniques for the body, started to emerge and I began making those mind body spirit practices into habits.

It worked! The results were so astounding, I had to share this program. It reversed my early stages of Alzheimer’s (In 2010 I tested positive for the APO-e4 Alzheimer’s gene), gave me tons more energy and kept breast cancer from recurring. I felt it was my purpose to help society change its views of what life can be in our later years. We’re living longer and I had found a way to make the extended life a more dynamic and joyful experience. How could I not share it?

And so I did. That was the birth of my first book, Think and Grow Young.
