Iāve officially been here a month!!! It simultaneously feels like it flew by but also like the longest month ever. I still definitely donāt feel settled, but I guess thatās to be expected. Since in my previous post we established that Iām lonely and miss you, Iāll use this post to provide a more logistical and hopefully cheerful take on what Iāve been up toā¦ Iām employed and I have an apartment!! Iāve had the j.o.b. for a little over a week and a half, and Iāve been with the roomies for two weeks now. Iām super thrilled about the roommate situation, and Iām content(?) about work I guess ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ .
Iām living beachside in Maroubra with two other girls (Olivia and Anja) who are super kind, go to Hillsong, and got connected to through a friend of a friend so theyāre not entirely random. Honestly, so #blessed with how it came together. Iād spent a week looking at different Gumtree (Aussie Craigslist) adds, and was minutes away from reluctantly accepting an offer to live in a house in the burbs with 6 other people, when I got a text about my place now. It was all rather divinely orchestrated, and I couldnāt be happier. I share a room with Olivia, and weāve got a lot of similar interests, the same sense of humor, and she may or may not have two pet snails, so itās prime. Anjaās super kind and thoughtful, though our schedules are a bit opposite, so I havenāt gotten much of a chance to hangout with her yet. The apartmentās tiny but itās cozy and it works. I also currently donāt have a bed frame, so I sleep on a mattress on the floor, but weāre working on it.
For the monies, Iām working at a lux boutique hotel downtown in the CBD district, and Iām in their F&B department. Itās less than stellar but it pays wells, so itāll do for now. Iām still in training, so I donāt know what Iāll be doing long term, but so far Iāve worked breakfast serving tea and coffee and bussing/setting tables, and Iāve served drinks for their evening cocktail hour for the higher paying guests in the executive lounge. I definitely prefer working the lounge, but again, canāt say this is the dream.
Ok so a brief rundown of what else Iāve been up to: Amidst locking down housing and a job thereās been coastal beach walks, one possibly ill advised walk along the rocks, getting lost in the park and testing my sense of direction after my phone died, walks to the quay (opera house location), a photo exhibit, bookstore afternoon, getting on the wrong train to the beach and ending up in the forest, many walks through Sydneyās winter festival Vivid, a few trips to the movies, many rides on the bus, a night on the town with the Airbnb host and their friend, and one Iām lonely and desperate for friends so Iāll agree to a date with you date (it wasā¦interesting). Oh! And I also went to the zoo and had my spirit revived and my soul cleansed. It was the zoo to end all zoos, where dreams become reality, and I am their biggest stan. I will be going back, and I will happily give them all of my money.
Overall this month has been good, great, awesome, hard, lonely, interesting, and really everything you would expect from packing up and moving to the other side of the world. Itās an adjustment. Itās a dream that still doesnāt feel real. If I had to quantify my state, Iād say on average Iām 80-85% well and happy and the other 15-20% is lonely and fighting the culture shock, and I think those are pretty good numbers.
I canāt seem to say it enough, but I miss you all and love you and thank you so so much for all the texts and snapchats and facetimes :)
