It was a rare moment in his life since leaving home that he felt the loss of his family– their absence from his life– in any concrete way, but in the last several days as his moods had mellowed and he’d found himself in a period of blessed mental clarity he’d begun to miss them fiercely. On the tail end of a phone call he’d nearly hung up multiple times before his sister had answered Felix had broken down into tears at the mere sound of his sister telling him she loved him and missed him when they hadn’t seen one another in years; but in spite of the mixed feelings speaking to his family left him with he had wandered out of his villa towards the library with a clear head and a warmth in him that he was happy to cling to as long as he could. He’d scoured the library for several minutes to track down his sister’s favorite book before he curled up in a chair and read quietly with a soft, easy smile on his lips until the sound of someone approaching him drew his attention and his initial response– so unlike him normally– was to smile warmly in their direction, “ Ça va? Can I do something for you?”
Ainsley had grown tired of all the worn books in Tulach House and had given the library a shot for the first time in what felt like ages. She trailed her fingers over the bindings until something faded and gold caught her eye.
The Sound and the Fury. She hadn’t read it since university. Her finger caught into the top to draw it down when she heard someone speak. “Rien d’important,” she assured him. “Je recherche un roman classique.”
ingrid-magnussen:
“There really is.” She couldn’t help but chuckle at the idea. Or well, the downright fact that she did that many times even now. “I’m stuck in here for the time being, I think. So it’s just me I have to worry about. It could be much worst, I’ll give this place that.”
►
“We’re all stuck here, so we may as well make the most of it,” Ainsley agreed with an easy smile. “I’m going on two years now.” And she’d lived off Last Song Syndrome or whatever warbled over the speakers at the fitness center.
fionadughlas:
The island was beautiful, and everyone she’d encountered so far had been perfectly nice, but that had done little to assuage the worry in the pit of her stomach about her sister. Everything about this place just felt overwhelming, and seeing the size of the pirates’ operation was just astonishing. How had they all gotten so organized? How had they managed to pull off the kidnappings of so many royals? It wasn’t like they had no security back home, and yet…
Her head shot up at the sound of a familiar voice. “Ains!”
She wrapped her arms around her sister, squeezing tightly, feeling the knot in her belly finally release. Ainsley was here, she was here and she was okay. Anything else Fiona could deal with as long as she knew those two things.
“Oh my god Ainsley, I’m so glad you’re alright. You are okay, right?”
Ainsley clung to her sister for another long moment. It felt like Fiona was the only one she knew on the island, despite the smattering of a few acquaintances. A few people she used to party with way back when, but no one she could fully count on. Two years. Two long years since she’d arrived to the island and she let out the longest breath she hadn’t realized she’d held inside her.
“I’m fine,” she promised, drawing back to look at Fiona. “I’m good, I promise. Are you hurt? Did they hurt you?”

Life on the island had shifted. For the first time ever, Ainsley held a device in her hand that allowed her music. Contact with other people on the island, but it was still something. What she was allowed to do was use it for music on Spotify, even if she had to listen to ads. If she broke the phone, she couldn’t have another. Even now, she soaked up every lyric of every song she had missed so desperately. She could follow her old playlists from back home and the sweet melodies of her childhood would follow.
The only thing missing now was her family. Her brothers, her sister. Anything to tell them she was okay. Lorne was alive, he was at peace.
Everything came to a screeching halt when she glanced up from the phone to see a familiar head of chestnut curls. Fiona.
Her sister. They’d gotten her sister.
“Fi!” she called and gave her little notice before throwing her arms around her.
ingrid-magnussen:
Ingrid couldn’t help the smile on her face. “They really do. Today’s children will never understand.” She moved to sit on the bed, leaving the music on. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had music at will. I’ve been taking full advantage. I’ve also been trying to spare my fiancé of the boy bands so it’s mostly been here. Plus, the dance party is so much better on one’s own.”
Ainsley had no idea about today’s children; hell, an entire lifetime could have gone by since she was kidnapped. Technology could be unrecognizable by the time she made it home. “Fortunately, mine doesn’t mind the noise,” she replied. Aoife at least tolerated it so long as she couldn’t hear it. “There’s something about lip-syncing to Backstreet Boys into your hair brush during your morning routine.”
ingrid-magnussen:
Ingrid wasn’t sure what the catch was with the phones. She wasn’t going to ask and she hoped that wouldn’t be her downfall. It didn’t connect to the outside world but she could have music. That alone was worth the risk. She was in her room at the Tulach house, listening to the 90′s pop station she had on as she tidied up. She realized after she had been singing for a while that someone was in her doorway. She looked up, chuckling softly. “Boy bands are infectious. I can’t apologize for it.”
Ainsley wasn’t sure what was up with the phones but it was best to not look a gift horse in the mouth. She held her basket of clean clothes at her hip and her phone remained in the back pocket of her jeans. At first, she wondered if she somehow ass-dialed Spotify, only for her to hear the music coming from one of the rooms. Ainsley’s head poked around the corner when she recognized the song. “Aye, no, never apologize for boy bands, love. They make the world go ‘round.”
wcndywarwick:
Wendy came up and sat herself down on the sandy beach, crisscrossing her legs pretzel style and pushing her wet hair out of her face. The sun was quickly warming her up, but a shadow falling over her caused her to look up and squint at the person who’d come up to her. She offered them a gentle smile. “Going for a swim?” she asked, raising an eyebrow at them curiously. “The water’s a little chilly, but not too bad.”
Ainsley hadn’t done much by way of socializing since after the bonfire, but there were times she sought to change it. The sea water lapped at her feet as she made her way down the shoreline. Spotting Wendy once she heard that familiar voice, she turned to face her with an easy smile. “I was considering it, but now I might.” Then her smile deepened. “How have you been, love?”
devyncambell:
Crossing her arms, she rolled her eyes. “You know I still haven’t saved you yet. I could just let your rot up there.” Then again she remembered that if any Tulach finds out a royal died when she could have done something it was her ass that would get chewed out. As she sighed, she allowed her hands to fall to her sides. “Stay there - I’m coming.” She hollered up as she moved up the slight hill trying to find a way to get the princess without getting stuck or harmed herself. Then again, it was probably a good thing she had Dex to help her.
Finding her way up, safely, she could see her and a way for her to get her on safer ground. A few years ago, before they started to kidnap royals - she really would have left her there to rot. The things she does for these bloody pirates. There was a sturdy tree nearby that Devyn was able to climb and lean over to reach her hand down towards Ainsley.
“Can you reach my hand?”
“I could jump down and break my ankle, also,” she offered with a scoff. She wasn’t even certain how she’d gotten up there. A small walk to clear her head later and she’d ended up there. She looked up as the pirate ended up on the wall alongside her and her teeth worried her lip. “Just...be careful, yeah?”
She braced herself on the rock to see if she could crane upwards anymore. “Can you lower anymore? I can almost reach you.”
lili-orlov:
Lili took the bottle offered and pulled a piece of chocolate from the copious amount rested by the fire, “That’s true,” she nodded before pulling a piece of chocolate from the bar and popping it in her mouth, followed with a swig of whiskey. To her surprise, it wasn’t bad, it was actually pretty good, “Wow, I never would’ve tried that,” she admitted and smiled at the other. “I think I’ll hold on to that, for the next time I have both chocolate and whiskey available.” The blonde handed over the bottle to Ainsley just as she’d been given it and gazed into the flames a moment before lifting her gaze to the woman once more, “I’m Lili by the way.” Vasilia knew of the Dùghlas heirs but she didn’t know them personally.
“If you try Glenrothe and milk chocolate with a lower cocoa content, it’ll wake up a whole new level of flavor,” she encouraged. Ainsley had gone straight for the chocolate pairings at whiskey and scotch tastings. While some may prefer wine, she preferred whiskey, even if it was considered male-oriented. She could pick out cheap swill from top-shelf, pricey whiskey. She could almost pinpoint the distillery that made it if she put her mind to it. “I’m Ainsley.”
aoifeflanagan:
“I suppose that could be the case” she said with a shrug. Aoife had a dislike of anything overly bitter, but she figured having chocolate with the whiskey might help cut down on that bitterness. “Tell you what: considering today is a day we should all be enjoying, I’ll give it a shot.” She grabbed herself a piece of chocolate and popped it into her mouth, before picking up the nearest whiskey bottle. She poured a little into a glass and took a swig of it.
Ainsley watched the pirate’s reaction closely to gauge any like or dislike, but Aoife looked a little too neutral. Her personal favorite was dark chocolate paired with Caol Ila. The smoky flavor profile was almost as intoxicating as the whiskey itself. “If you like that, try milk chocolate and sherry. It sounds dumb, but it’s a great combination.”
savagenikita:
𝐘𝐈𝐊𝐄𝐒! 𝐁𝐘 𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐄𝐌𝐒 like she had been a quite time on this island. Which saddened her a little… She misses her home, with all the things considering. Although she did not want to admit, she feels safer on this island than at home. Hence, she wouldn’t let this thought ruin her mood. Especially at this party. ❛ Oh, really?! Which one was the best, in your opinion? ❜
Perhaps it was a little sad that Ainsley had been gone for over well over a year and a half now. She’d nearly forgotten what it was like to wake up in her bed with her dog curled up behind her knee, but now she’d settled into a routine. It didn’t feel like Stockholm had taken a hold of her, but who knew? She didn’t outright hate the pirates and Roman Tulach’s words to her still rang out.
Her father was to blame for Roman’s uprising.
Ainsley shook her head to clear it and focused on the blonde’s words before her. “I liked the year when I got here. S’mores stations. There were some interesting choices and some great scotch.”
aoifeflanagan:
It had been a while since Aoife had spoken with the princess she was supposed to be keeping an eye on. Between her work in the infirmary and spending so much time with Roza, she knew she’d been slacking on her royal-watching duties. So she considered it a sign when she ran into Ainsley by chance at the party. Watching as Ainsley took a bite of the chocolate and then a sip of whiskey, her eyes widened in surprise. Then she said “You know, I can’t say I’ve ever tried that. But as someone who is not a big fan of whiskey, I’m eager to see if it makes the taste any more tolerable.” Aoife was more a cocktail woman than anything else, not being much for straight liquor.
Ainsley was on a brief first name basis with what seemed to feel like her tenth or thirteenth watcher. However, it suited her well. There were times she liked to pretend like she didn’t have one, only because it gave her some semblance of independence. “If you aren’t a fan of whiskey, you haven’t been drinking the right one,” she informed her. “Like wine, you gotta find out which one works best.”
piratexmama:
“That’s good” said Genevieve with a nod of her head. She knew the youngest Dughlas was the sort of woman who liked to party (or so she’d read in the news), so if she was having a good time, the party was promising. A half-smile formed at the princess’s question. “Ask me again a couple drinks from now” she teased.
Ainsley was a lot of things, but pretentious was never one of them. While her family hid behind things like royalty and crowns, she lived her life out loud. She said what she meant and meant what she said. It made her a press nightmare, particularly after her brother’s death.
A wry smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. “A drunk man speaks a sober man’s thoughts, no?” she commented, her gaze shifting to the pirate beside her.
lili-orlov:
Lili sat with a very burnt s’more in her hand, not planning on eating it, but pawn it off on her sister later, as the princess hated wasting food. Her eyes fell on the other beside her, simply eating the chocolate rather than the whole mash-up, however the chase of whiskey after had confused the blonde and caused her to unknowingly raised a confused brow. “I’ve heard about chasing a strong drink, but never chasing chocolate with a strong drink,” she mused with a chuckle. “I can’t say I have tried that. But I have had chocolate in a mixed drink and whiskey was in it.”
“You never know unless you try, lass,” Ainsley pointed out, slyly pushing the bottle her way. She gently scrubbed at her lip line with a finger to scour away any errant traces of marshmallow.
(Part of her wondered if any clothes back home would actually fit her now.)
“Whiskey and chocolate is like wine and chocolate. You pair it up right and it’s wonderful.” That, and it was an old Scottish tradition.
