ÜLA: Multi-Purpose Spatula Concept (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: MDF, Copic Markers
This was an assignment for design in which I made a concept prototype of my design for a multi-purpose spatula. I designed this spatula for a baker in which this spatula also incorporated a timer as well as an electronic thermometer.
After several ideations and design processes, I came up with this design in order to fit the hand. Then I created models of the form to give me an example of what an actual model would look like.
Plant Stand (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Steel Wire, Laminated Wood
For this assignment we had to create a stand using laminated wood. First we had to create jigs that would be clamped together in order to laminate the veneer to the desired shape. I decided to create a sort of shelf that would hang off a door or a railing.
Acrylic Shelf (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Acrylic
For this assignment, we had to create a shelf from a template to get us familiar with the router machine and using solvent.
The side faces of the shelf was laser etched on and all the pieces were hand cut with the router table and table saw.
Wooden Mallet (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Red Oak, Wood Glue
This assignment was for our prototypes class to get us using the basic machines in the wood shop.
We laminated 4 pieces of wood together with alternating grain in order to create the mallet head (two pieces in the middle with a gap for the handle). The handle is a separate piece that is tapered at the end in order for it to fit into the mallet head without falling through. I designed the mallet head so that the handle can be removed.
Coffee Cup Lid (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Balsa Foam, Wood Filler, Polypropylene Plastic
This was for our prototypes class in which we had to design our own coffee cup lid in order for us to get familiar with using the wood lathe.
I decided to keep my design simple and minimal. We created these by using the wood lathe to create the circular form of the balsa foam and then I used carving tools and a crafting knife to carve out the design I wanted. Then, I used wood filler in order make the surface smooth so that the heated plastic is less likely to get caught on its rough surface. Afterwards, we vacuum formed our design in order to have the final plastic form of our coffee cup lid.
Complex Organizational Study (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Red Oak, Frosted Acrylic, Brass, MDF
For this study, we used many different forms: found objects, line, plane and volume. This time it was not restricted to only rectilinear forms and compositions. We had to create a dynamic composition using 7-12 different forms in a composition. I wanted to keep the composition simple but dynamic at the same time.
For the volumes, I decided that I wanted to use wood. The volumes are all made of laminated red oak and cut with a band saw and sanded down to its shape using the belt sander. The planes were made from frosted acrylic that was cut from the laser cutter and then pent to shape in the oven.
Rather than having visible wires showing the supports within the composition, I decided to have the supports built into the shapes. I decided to sand down the two volumes on the edges that were touching the base and drilled a hole through the base and the volumes to set a dowel to hold the volumes up on the base while being strong enough to hold the other forms that were connected to it.
Rectilinear Study (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: P95 Frosted Acrylic on MDF Board
This was a project that we did for our 3D class. We were studying rectilinear lines, planes and volumes and how they interacted with each other to create an interesting composition. We created a final composition using any materials we wanted on an MDF board. The assignment was to have5-7 lines, planes and/or volumes interacting together in a space to create direction. We also had to consider the hierarchy of dominance among the pieces.
I decided to use frosted acrylic for all my pieces because I wanted to be able to show how the planes and lines pierced through or into the volumes by using the translucency of the material to my advantage. All the pieces of acrylic were cut with the laser cutter and then sanded off on all the edges to a 45 degree angle. I decided to have the 45 degree angle so that it was easier to solvent all the pieces together without having any of the edges of the acrylic exposed on the volumes.
Urban Survival Kit (Rotational Molding Project) Presentation Drawing (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Copic Markers
This was for our design class in which we worked in groups in our class to design an urban survival kit using rotational molding as part of the product. As a group, we discussed and drew up ideas, and created a final design. For my group (with Luke and Skye), we wanted to create a survival kit that is accessible during natural disasters such as hurricanes. We wanted to design a stack-able kit that included all the necessities needed during such disasters.
For drawing class, we had to create presentation drawings for this rotational molding project in grey-scale and in color.
Handheld Vacuum Cleaner Presentation Drawings (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Color Pencil, Pastels, Copic Markers
After developing the form and shape of the design, we had to draw our design from many different points of view in order to get across the entire form through our drawings. We also had to design a company name and logo for our 'product' that we designed, this had to be included in the presentation drawings.
We drew several versions of the presentation drawings: one in blue pencil, on in grey scale markers and one in color markers. The presentation drawings had to include the company name and logo, a three-quarter view of the product, orthographic views and callouts.
Handheld Vacuum Cleaner Ideations (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Indigo Blue Color Pencil on Newsprint
After drawing inspiration from nature as well as existing products, we drew many different types of our own designs by morphing the two. I decided that I wanted to design based off and inspired by animal forms.
The second image was the development of the design that I chose.
Handheld Electronic Ideations from Nature and Existing Products (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Indigo Blue Color Pencil on Newsprint
This was part of my drawing class in which we were designing our own handheld electronic object. These drawings are drawn from photographs of nature and of other existing electronic products to draw inspiration from their forms and shapes. We had to draw the side view using only line and some light shading. In the end, I decided that I wanted to design a handheld vacuum cleaner.
Stick Dog (2014) - Ian Lu
I told my friend I would post some of his artwork. Definitely some of the best work I’ve seen.
Still Life (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Acrylic Paint
For these assignments, we had to paint specific still lives. The first painting was done in the classroom, in which we painted flowers on a windowsill, attempting to capture the sense of illumination from natural light.
The other two paintings were done at the park, in which we had to paint certain scenery involving water, reflections and natural light.
6 Hand Narrative (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Pencil
For this assignment, we had to draw 6 hands in which they interacted together to create a narrative. I decided to create a 'tea narrative' because I thought it would be an interesting way to have all the hands interact together.
Grey-scale Still Life Painting (5 Shades) (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Acrylic Paint (5 Shades)
For this assignment, we had to paint a still life involving multiple objects. We were only allowed to have 5 specific shades of grey (Black, Dark Grey, Grey, Light Grey and White). We had these colors pre-made to the specific shade before we started painting. When we were drawing this, we had to assign different sections to specific shades so that it realistically depicted the shade of the still life.
Three-point Perspective (2014) - Jacqueline Hsiao
Materials: Charcoal (Vine and Compressed)
This was the final perspective assignment where we had to do three-point perspective. For this, we were allowed to have the three vanishing points wherever we wanted. I decided to have one of the vanishing points within the borders of the page to create a more dramatic effect. I also emphasized the effect by having the other two vanishing points extremely close to the border of the page. We had to draw an imagined space.
