Me As A College Student

These two images describe my life because of the context of their pictures. College can be stressful and so I just want to get up and fly away. The picture of a person looking out of an airplane is a picture that can relax many and would for me as well as one endeavors on a new journey and memory in life. The picture regarding something on fire shows how there's something that is dangerous and brightly colored-right in front of your face- yet you can't overcome it because it's too hard, nearly impossible with the resources that you have. The angle that it's taken at makes the individual look puny and weak as well compared to the problem at hand.

Reflection

On my speech, I felt very well prepared. I spent 3 days practicing on and off and also timing myself to make sure I was in the time restraints. Whenever I gave the actual speech in class, I felt fairly confident however I did get a little nervous at one point where I lost my place in the note cards but then quickly calmed myself down and proceeded on. I tried to use personal connections to really drive my points in. I wanted students to be able to understand where all of my points where coming from as a student myself and also how college athletics affects each and every one of us. I also wanted to over across as very credible so I was sure to introduce the sources that I used. I was not too sure with how my transitions went from point to point but I did enjoy giving the speech! Public speaking is not typically something that I have a problem with and I actually enjoy sometimes. I like to voice my opinion! All in all, I think the speeches went well for the entire class too.

Serial Episode 2

In this serial podcast, I happened to notice more how the music is played on certain parts of the podcast. Nobody in the class had mentioned it when we discussed the first episode but I feel as if the type of music that is chosen to play when she begins to get into the story is very meaningful and effective as well. There is a beginning phase of the podcast where the narrator tells the basis of things and she might also introduce a few key concepts that need to be known- such as the update on the current case- that will in turn be vital information to understand the discussion that will follow. The music then plays and it has a very serious tone to it, but still remains to be adventurous in a way and makes you think of mystery books and shows too. This can cause a connection with the listener as if the news that is going to be told is very very interesting. I still feel as if Sarah has bias towards Bowe though just by how she uses his information to back up topics after she gets the opinion of his past comrades and others. She does give more insight to the counterpoint's side though which is allowing the reader to really determine for herself/himself if he is to side with the platoon or Bowe.

One think I could use a little extra in is retouching on fallacies. After that jeopardy trial, I’m a bit lost in the world of fallacies and want to know a broader range and really straighten them out from one another. A majority of my high school knowledge from this topic has failed to be retained…

David Sedaris. "A modest proposal". The New Yorker. 28, September 2015.

In this particular article, a now grown man shares his story of how he's become to get married to another man. The personal anecdote he uses allows the reader to see his perspective on how growing up and realizing you are homophobic affects ones definition of a marital situation. He defines his partnership as never really wanted to get married and that he would never introduce the man he lives with as his husband or boyfriend or what have you and also that he always refers to himself as single. As a reader you can understand how this group of people is singled out from society and therefore he wishes not to tell the world. He does not seem very flamboyant in the sense of expressing his sexual preference. By doing all of this and giving us an insider to his personal story, it allows us to not feel as if the issue is wrong and that that homosexual individuals would still thrive in the world even if they were not allowed to be married anyways. They are a partnership in this case but neither wanted to take the role of marriage.

David P. "Don't wake up in a roadside ditch". DirectTV. 6 May, 2013. I chose a very obvious fallacy this time. When I was in my AP classes in high school learning about fallacies, we used to Direct TV commercials as a prime example of a slippery slope so I obviously reverted back to old ways. In this commercial, it is giving the viewer the impression that if they do not give up cable and get Direct TV, that all of the horrible things will happen to them in lea of it. One thing will lead to another thing that was worse than the previous and in the end it will lead to something even more awful than all of the rest of the events, like ending up in a road side ditch (need I remind you they say that'll happen just because you won't give up your cable...). The commercial tells the tales of a VERY unlikely event but it appeals to the viewers and gives them something to laugh about and hopefully in turn will think Direct TV is a good company and purchase their goods and services. The market loves commercials like this though and I wouldn't be surprised if this commercial and the others like it lead to an increase in sales for the company. Go fallacies!

Drop the Balls Super Bowl Ad. T-Mobile. 6, February 2016.

This was one of my favorite commercials! The commercial used ethos to bring light to Steve Harvey’s mishap at the miss universe pageant. The intended viewers could have also felt pity for the host as well as he claims “it’s not me who messed up this time!” It was said that version had actually used last years statistics for their commercial at that time, the company of t-mobile has since doubled their coverage, etc. The fact that they have pulled in statistics to show their point gives them a lot of credibility, which is know as logos in rhetor. The commercial thrived overall with the use of not only one rhetoric appeal, but 3! Way to go T-mobile!! Kudos to your writing team for a worthy commercial!

Marc Silver. "If you shouldn't call it third world, what should you call it?" Goats and soda. 6, January 2015.

The exigence particular article, I would have to say is whether or not a certain term is appropriate to use when describing and categorizing countries of the world. Every term can trigger different emotion, either good or bad, when spoken to different individuals depending on their outlook of classification or perhaps how well off the country is or is becoming. The author of the article is specifically Marc Silver, but he speaks as a blogger that wishes to not present any bias or create any perpetual feeling to any of his readers. He writes at one point that a term was "out of date, insulting, and confusing." This is exactly what the blogger is hoping to stray away from. He also writes to other bloggers and writers of any sort allowing them to see how a single phrase can affect so many people an that we (as writers) should be as specific as possible when it comes to such issues to prevent any bias.

Before I read this article, I already had an opinion about the topic. Before I went into the reading, I laid out my thoughts and thought the following. I do not find it appropriate to judge people that are higher in our society for them and their families doing things families do all around the country or that they should not should not be reprimanded for the wrong doings that can occur to anyone. They are normal people too and deserve to be treated so. After I read the article, I still have that belief in mind but also these individuals are held to higher standards and are looked upon as leaders and heroes. They are people who others want to be or to live like and therefore should act well enough to represent that of a great leader. Their families can alter this but it is also important to handle the situation in a manner that can also be praised. The leaders of our country are looked up to but they are also humans that make mistakes, just like you and I.
