Cognitive functional stack: Se Fi Te Ni
Seyong is persistent and has worked hard for his dream for years and years with limited “success”. Nevertheless, his Se-Ni keeps him ploughing forward, looking for an opening at every moment. He’s really shone out on The Unit, and this is of his own doing. He has an intuitively decided attack plan (Se-Ni) and understands the need for screen time and viewer interest (Se, Te). His facial expressions are second to none and he’s often one used for a good reaction (Se). He’s an active and in-the-moment stage-loving performer (Se), who is always looking for opportunities at every turn to showcase what he is capable of. He’s quick to leap into action and take the initiative, even if he is not the leader (Te).
He’s definitely a feeler who cares a lot about the wellbeing and emotional state of others. However, this isn’t in a Fe kind of way, but is rather more based around what he feels he himself needs emotionally, and therefore expects for others too. He cares for others in quite a reactionary way (Fi), rather than a preventatory way (Fe) - for instance, he will rush up to people who are hurt or upset or injured, and offer support immediately, but he won’t necessarily see if someone is about to need that help. (Fi, Aux-Ni) This was shown when Kijung was crying about his voice – up until that point, Seyong had simply been encouraging Kijung to push himself, not having realised that Kijung had a bit of a mental block on the high pitches.
He’s aggressive and physical (Se) and expresses his strong emotions with his whole body (Se, Fi). For instance, he finds Kijung so cute that he bites him on the cheek. Kijung doesn’t like this, and it serves only for Seyong’s pleasure and not for anyone else’s. He also physically attacks Jeup and Rokhyun when they pick the people who Seyong was interested in for their teams. The attacks are playful and swiftly followed by hugs, but the fact that Seyong is behaving in this manner in front of all of the other contestants shows strong Fi, since he hasn’t quite realised how this action would feel to the many idols who hadn’t been picked for a team yet. Seyong is essentially showing he had preferences for the three or so people who were already picked – but doesn’t consider that this performance of favouritism might hurt the 30+ who are still sitting on the sidelines, waiting to be picked (Fi). His Fi was also obviously expressed in the infamous occasion where he and Euijin disagreed on the dance formations for the Heartbeat team. His Te had planned that all out carefully, and his Fi was insulted at the thought of it all being thrown away.
His Te is expressed in his careful planning of the dance routines and his drill-like practices. He carefully observes and corrects any movements from his teammates that he sees as incorrect. Seyong gets annoyed at anyone who isn’t pulling their weight and isn’t trying their best, or meeting his high standards. (Se-Ni) However, he then does his best to then help them improve.
His team-picking moment was calculated and almost completely devoid of empathy (Te); he chose people completely based on what they would bring to the table, including picking some people who were surprised that someone as presumably popular as Seyong would pick someone less ‘popular’ like them (Raehwan, Heedo).
Overall, he takes people at their face value but works hard to improve himself and those around him – not necessarily for the benefit of viewers but for his personal satisfaction. I’m confident that Seyong embodies the functions of an ESFP.
