Stop that.
Applejack expected many things at the end of the day. A home full of life, a grandmother busy preparing dinner in the kitchen, a younger sister either helping their grandmother, or doing her homework, and an older brother still in the field or stacking apples in the barn. These were comforting, normal things.
The pegasus on the couch was not one of those things.
Applejack glanced around, her ears perked. She could hear Apple Bloom and Granny Smith setting the table in the kitchen. Big Mcintosh was nowhere to be heard, but the stallion was as quiet as a mouse if he wanted to be. For all she knew, he could be right behind her. A quick glance confirmed that he, in fact, wasn’t.
She faced the couch once more, her eyes taking in the other mare in the room. The one who was pouting at her. Glaring, even.
"How’s it hangin’, Dash?"
"Meh."
"Meh?"
"Meh."
"Sounds terrible." Applejack chuckled. "Y’wanna talk about it?"
"Meh."
"Y’said that already."
"It still fits!"
"Oh, you’re speakin’ now? Thank Celestia!" Applejack said, raising her eyes to the sky in praise.
"Shut up." Rainbow glared, crossing her forelegs as she turned her head away. "This is all your fault anyway."
Applejack blinked. “Me? What’d I do?”
Rainbow’s glare turned back to Applejack. “Really, AJ?” She asked, pointing a hoof at her now swollen midsection.
"Oh. Right." Applejack’s ears flattened against her head and cleared her throat. "I thought you were okay with it now?"
"I was! Am! I-I dunno!"
Applejack quickly trotted over and sat next to the pegasus. “Darlin’, what’s wrong?” Applejack put a hoof on one of Dash’s as she remained silent. “Tell me, please?”
Rainbow stared back, holding Applejack’s gaze for a few moments before grunting and looking away. “I was talking to Twi about stuff, and then it shifted to the little guys,” she said, her free hoof caressing her stomach. “That’s all she talks about these days anyway.” Rainbow smirked. “You know how she is.”
Applejack chuckled. “Don’t we all.”
Rainbow grinned back, the first smile Applejack had seen since walking in. “Anyway, she starts nagging me about getting a checkup. She said it’s been five months and I hadn’t done one this month yet. Won’t shut up until I get one.”
"She try to follow ya to the hospital?"
Rainbow rolled her eyes. “Yup. Told her to sit her butt down. Flew to the hospital, and they had a free slot right then, so I got my checkup done.”
"Wait, that’s what got ya all in a tizzy?" Applejack’s eyes widened. "Did somethin’ happen? Is he alright?"
"She."
Applejack blinked. “She?”
"Filly. Pegasus, too." Rainbow grinned. "And she’s perfectly healthy."
Applejack frowned, her emotions warring between elation and confusion. “So why were you so grumpy?”
Rainbow snorted, once again glaring at Applejack. “They said I need to stop flying.”
Applejack guffawed. “That’s it?”
"Hey! This isn’t funny!"
"Dash, I’m surprised you were still flyin’. Didn’t Twi tell you to stop weeks ago?"
"I did!" Rainbow said. Her ears wilted as Applejack raised an eyebrow. "Okay, okay, I stopped most of my practicing months ago."
"Most?"
"The dangerous stuff. I’m just flying laps now. Gimme some credit here." Rainbow grumbled. "And now they’re taking that away too!"
Applejack shook her head. “You can still exercise on the ground, ya know. What’s the big deal?”
"Uh, my house is kinda in the sky, remember?"
"Oh. Right." Applejack blinked. "So live here for a spell."
Rainbow stared at her. “Just like that?”
Applejack grinned. “Just like that. You’re family now, hon. Grab some stuff from your place and come by tonight. Y’can sleep in my bed if ya want.”
"Hey, I don’t want to kick you out!"
"Who said you’d kick me out?" Applejack smirked, caressing Rainbow’s belly with a hoof. "I just want both my girls next to me."
Rainbow’s cheeks brightened as she scrunched her muzzle at the farmer. “Stop it.”
Applejack couldn’t wipe the smile from her face. “Stop what, Sugarcube?”
"That." Rainbow said as Applejack leant down to nuzzle Rainbow’s stomach."Stop that. It’s your fault I can’t fly, you don’t get to be so happy and cute."
"No can do."
Rainbow rolled her eyes. “I better be getting cider while I’m here.”
"No booze while pregnant, remember?" Applejack chuckled as Rainbow’s eyes twitched. "Tell ya what. I got some without alchohol in it. Will that do?"
"…Fine." Rainbow was silent a moment. "AJ?"
"Hm?"
"Thanks."
"Anytime, Sugarcube."
