There is no heritage to speak of. No lineage, no father’s father. The Westlakes are Pennsylvania-born, solidly on the lower end of the middle class. Dad’s beater car for all the kids to share, an uncle with access to his in-laws upstate apple farm so they could pick for free. Mom worked two jobs for nearly a decade until their Dad polished his resume and found a better one. Their parents were always good stewards. They always offered them an open line of communication and never told them their questions weren’t worth exploring or answering. They did the best they could with the money they had and invested in their children more than themselves. They didn’t have the best house, but they had a warm one, a place to invite people to where cutting a slice of pie in half to give to another was the way you did things.
They come from no legacy, but they’re determined to make their own. (Except June. smh.) So they’re scrappy, having little help and none of the money to fund themselves without playing the dirty game, too. Ultimately, they rely on each other. They know what it’s like to be the people with nothing. It doesn’t mean they’re honest or naive, but they have the sort of strong will to go up against people who could damn well beat them down.
They’re all in politics or are on the fringe of its spectrum. So charity, working as a legal assistant or personal assistant, district representative, etc. They’re the little dark horse family that could, doing their best to prove they have the energy to keep up. All four siblings have a good relationship, but they have their missteps and secrets among each other. Don’t really see them hating each other, but definitely being frustrated or annoyed because, y’know, siblings.
Def canon: They call Rutger his name, Ethan / Rutger wants to be president one day. / June is the youngest who left and came back married then dropped out of her internship (no one knows this).
