It's been a few weeks since the night of Slytherin's quidditch match, and he and Hufflepuff are assigned as partners for their charms project. He's very distant and only speaks to Puff when he has to.

She asks him how he is and he doesn't make eye contact and gives one-word answers. Before Hufflepuff can ask if everything's ok, Professor Flitwick dismisses the class, and Slytherin closes his textbook shut and slides out the door.

Hufflepuff can't shake off the feeling that something is wrong. She comes early to Charms class the following week, and she overhears Slytherin talking to Professor Flitwick.

"--change partners?"

Professor Flitwick shakes his hand. "Mr. Lestrange, the project is already in progress. You will have to stick with Ms. Tian until you are finished."

Hufflepuff backs away from the door and blinks back the sting in her eyes. Was Slytherin mad at her?

She's quiet for most of the class, only exchanging words with Sly when necessary. When class is dismissed, she catches up with him in the hall.

"Hey," she blocks his path before he can make it to the staircase. "What's going on?"

Slytherin's eyebrows knit together in surprise before they're replaced with a cool, glassy expression that infuriates Hufflepuff even more. "What do you mean?"

"This," she waves between them. "You're acting weird. Why did you ask Professor Flitwick to change partners?"

He shrugs, looking away. "I thought it'd be better that way."

Her shoulders slump and she swallows the lump in her throat. "But why," she says in a quiet voice. "Did I do something?"

Slytherin huffs a bitter laugh. "Are you serious, Hufflepuff?"

"Please, just tell me what this is about, Sly--"

"You're sending me mixed signals! First, you tell me never to talk to you again, and the next you're acting like nothing happened."

Shock registers on Hufflepuff's face. Before she can respond, Slytherin mutters that he has to go.

She turns and watches him leave, words caught in her throat.

What in Merlin's beard was Slytherin talking about?

Later, Hufflepuff is having hot cocoa with Giselle when she brings up what happened with Slytherin.

"It's all just so weird," Puff murmurs, fiddling with her ring. "I never told him to not talk to me again."

"The fact that he tried to switch partners is actually evil," Giselle stirs her cup. "Clearly, there's been some kind of miscommunication between you two. When did he start acting distant?"

"I can't tell," she sighs. "I haven't really seen him since his Quidditch game."

"Speaking of the match, how's things with Nicholas? You seemed kind of anxious after the match."

"It's nothing," Hufflepuff shrugs, looking away. "Nick was just feeling a little tense before the match, and when his team lost, I left to go find him but he didn't wanna talk so I just went back to my room after and stayed in."

Giselle sits up. "Wait, what? I saw you near the Gryffindor common room that night and thought you were seeing him."

"No," Puff frowns. "Nick said he needed time to cool off, so I left him alone and stayed in my common room."

"That's crazy. This must be some weird doppelganger shit happening because I saw you. We talked for a bit, but you were in a rush."

"That can't be true. Ask my roommate, she'll tell you I was with her the whole night."

"Okay wait," Giselle rubs her face. "There's something else. When I talked to you that night, I thought it was the dim lighting in the hall, but I swore your face looked different. Like, you, but not you."

Hufflepuff grips her arms. "You're creeping me out now, G."

"I'm sorry! But it's true."

They sit in silence for a bit until Giselle perks up. "I have an idea."

Ten minutes later, they're standing in front of the Gryffindor entrance. Hufflepuff clears her throat, and the Fat Lady stirs awake.

"Password?" She frowns at Hufflepuff and Giselle. "You're not Gryffindors," she grumbles.

"No," Giselle smiles awkwardly. "We just...wanted to see you."

"Yeah," Hufflepuff says. "We've been told that you're really good at singing opera and we wanted to see if it was true."

Giselle shoots Puff a look, and Puff shrugs before looking back at the Fat Lady, whose mouth stretches into a wide smile.

"Well, why didn't you say so, darling?"

Five painful minutes later, Puff and Giselle are discreetly rubbing their ears as the Fat Lady finishes off her song with a particularly high opera note.

"That was really great," Hufflepuff says with a weak smile. "Thank you."

The Fat Lady smoothes out her dress. "If you liked that song, I have another that I can sing--"

"We would love that," Giselle interrupts, "if we had more time, but we actually have a quick favor to ask of you."

"What is it, dear?"

Hufflepuff holds her breath as Giselle asks the Fat Lady if she is able to remember people coming in and out of the Gryffindor tower from that night of the Quidditch match.

Her eyes widen when the Fat Lady disappears and is replaced by an illusion of the corridor by the Gryffindor entrance. She watches as Giselle appears in the portrait in the far distance, talking to a girl whose back faces away from the Fat Lady's viewpoint. Puff's face blanches when the girl turns. It is Hufflepuff. But...it isn't.

Hufflepuff squints at the moving image. Is she crazy, or is the fake Hufflepuff's face distorted? Her nose shifts and stretches, hair shortening as she walks toward the entrance.

Strange, Hufflepuff thinks. The girl's eyes almost look familiar.

"Password?" The Fat Lady's voice booms from the illusion.

"Caput Draconis," Nicholas replies coolly as the polyjuice potion finally wears off, his cold eyes piercing through the illusion.

It's the big quidditch playoffs, and Hufflepuff shows up to the stadium in a red top with a jeans skirt

"There you are," Giselle exclaims. "What kept you?" When she sees Hufflepuff's puffy eyes, she falters. "Are you okay? What happened?"

Hufflepuff shakes them off. "Nothing, just allergies." She points to two free spots on the bench to divert Giselle's attention. "Let's go sit."

When the game starts, Hufflepuff cheers loudly with the others at Nicholas's entrance. His eyes scan the crowd and find Hufflepuff, and he winks at her before flying toward the Gryffindor team

The crowd roars when the Slytherin team is announced. Flashes of green and silver zip out of the entrance, and Hufflepuff catches a glimpse of Slytherin in the sky

The game officially begins, and it's a tight game. Nicholas, who plays as a Beater, is more aggressive than usual and aims a Bludger in the direction of Slytherin's head. Hufflepuff gasps as Slytherin dodges it by an inch, and Madam Hooch blows a whistle and gestures a warning to Nicholas. The Slytherin team is awarded a penalty shot, and Slytherin is picked to make the shot

Of course he makes it through the hoop goal, and deafening cheers erupt from the stadium. Slytherin meets Nicholas's glowering gaze with a cool expression, his lips curled into a slight smirk. He jerks his head up almost imperceptibly that Hufflepuff wouldn't have caught it if she wasn't already looking

Two nearby Gryffindor players swarm Nicholas and grab his arms before he can fly any closer to Slytherin, and Madam Hooch blows her whistle again and shouts something to them. Nicholas scowls and shakes off his teammates' grasps before flying back to his position

Hufflepuff doesn't even realize her hand is balled up until she unclenches her fist and sees nail imprints on her skin

After a very close game, Madam Hooch holds up the arm of the Slytherin captain, and the team burst into whoops and pile on top of one another

Hufflepuff claps, her eyes trained on Nicholas's retreating figure towards the exit. She overhears a Ravenclaw and a Slytherin student talking

"If it weren't for that Gryffindor Beater who tried to knock off Slytherin's head, their team might've gotten a tie without that penalty shot."

Hufflepuff tells Giselle that she has to go

Later on in the night, Slytherin slips out of his house entrance. Loud music and chatter booms beyond the door before he closes it

He walks through the dark corridors before finding a quiet spot bathed in moonlight. Propped up against a windowsill, he watches two bats fluttering across the courtyard, their iridescent wings catching in the light

What is wrong with him? He knows he should be celebrating the victory with his house, but he can't bring himself to go back to the music, the noise. Nothing can distract him from the feeling of defeat when, in the midst of triumph on the field, his eyes searched the audience for someone who wasn't there. Maybe she never was. A ghost, that's what it feels like Slytherin is reaching out for

Slytherin sighs and leans his head against the cobblestone wall. He feels so pathetic. All this pining for a girl who he can't even be with

A small smile quirks up at the corner of his mouth. It did feel good beating Nicholas today. Especially after the Bludger stunt he tried to pull. Slytherin can appreciate a sneaky move every now and then, but something about Nicholas just puts him off

A shuffling noise catches Slytherin's attention, and he cranes his neck to catch a figure in the dark walking around the corner

"Hufflepuff?" He's on his feet before he realizes, and he tries suppressing his smile as he takes a step toward her faint outline. "For a sec, I thought you were avoiding me."

Old tears streak her face, and she quickly wipes them with her sleeve. "I have to go--."

Slytherin quickly catches up to her before she can turn the corner. "Puff, what's wrong? Did I do something?"

"No."

"Okay...because it feels like you're avoiding me. Did Nicholas say something?"

"No, Slytherin." Her voice comes out ice cold. "It's not him, it's you."

"What are you talking about?"

"We can't be friends anymore."

Slytherin is stunned. "...What?"

Hufflepuff only repeats herself. The room becomes stifling, and Slytherin can't seem to get enough air.

"Is...this what you want?"

"Yes. It's not fair to Nicholas that we keep whatever this is," she gestures at the air between them, "to keep continuing."

"I made a promise to him," she says quietly, looking down at her feet.

"I don't--..." Slytherin sighs, rubbing the side of his face. "What do you mean, Puff? We're friends, aren't we?"

"We were," she says, an edge in her tone that Slytherin doesn't miss. "But sometimes I think you forget that."

He opens his mouth, then closes it. She turns to leave, and Slytherin reaches for her hand.

"Puff...you can't be serious." Slytherin's voice catches as he stares at her. "Look me in the eyes and tell me. Tell me that you want this."

"Slytherin, stop!" She wretches her hand away. "Why is it so hard for you to believe that I'm happy with him? Don't you think I know about your crush on me? You need to move on."

Her words are like a stab in Slytherin's chest, and Hufflepuff only shakes her head. "Please, Slytherin. Make this easier for the both of us, and don't talk to me again."

Slytherin doesn't follow Hufflepuff this time. He stands there, staring at the empty space, and lets the tears slip free.

"Are you wearing that to the game?"

Hufflepuff turns away from the mirror to Nicholas, who is sitting at the edge of her bed. "Yeah," she smoothes out the fabric of her dress. "Why, does it look bad?"

"No, no, babe." Nicholas gets up and walks to her side. Clasping her hands, he turns her so that she faces the mirror again. "You look beautiful," he rests his chin on her shoulder. "I just want you all to myself."

Hufflepuff hums a laugh. "Well, I'm all yours."

He tightens his grip around her waist and grins at their reflection. "Yea. It's just...it might be cold out. You should wear a jacket over that."

"Nicholas," she laughs. "It's like 23 degrees out. I'll be okay."

"You never know when the wind will pick up." He flops back on her bed. "C'mon, just wear something else. You have so many other nice clothes."

"Okay," Hufflepuff crosses her arms, "just say you hate this dress."

"No, it's not that!...well...kinda."

She scoffs a laugh and throws a stray sock in his direction. He dodges and wraps her into a bear hug, pulling her onto the bed with him. "I'm sorry, I wasn't lying when I said you looked beautiful. It's just...it's green."

Hufflepuff blinks. "...okay?"

He sighs. "I just think it's weird if you wear green to my Quidditch game tonight. You know we're playing against the Slytherin house, right?"

"Oh...I wasn't thinking about that when I chose this dress. Green is just my favorite color."

At his humorless face, she drops the smile. "Red is too--!"

"I can't believe you just said that," he groans, sliding off the bed.

"I was just kidding!" She laughs, trying to grab ahold of his arm. "I'm sorry."

He crosses his arms and looks away. Hufflepuff nestles up behind him and slides her arms over his shoulders. "Nick, don't be mad. I'll wear something red for tonight, okay?"

After a moment, Nicholas tilts his head up to meet her gaze. "Green isn't even that great, anyway."

She brushes their noses together and kisses him between the eyebrows. "You're real cute when you're jealous."

"I'm not jealous," he grumbles, sliding over to the trunk at the front of her bed. "C'mon, I'll help you pick something out."

"Okay," Hufflepuff perches forward against the footboard railing. "Hit me."

Nicholas adorns a furry scarf and drapes it dramatically over his shoulder. "This'd be perfect for the weather outside."

"Yes," she blows at the feathers, "if you want me to sweat to death."

He laughs and continues looking through her clothes, making small comments as he combs around.

His smile disappears.

"Did you find my ugly turtleneck," Hufflepuff asks. "You'd be surprised, it's actually really comfortable."

Nicholas wordlessly lifts up a green sweatshirt. His face is unreadable as he thumbs the tiny snake emblem on the hem. "Is...this Lestrange's?"

Hufflepuff's mouth goes dry as she stares at Slytherin's sweatshirt. She opens her mouth to speak, but nothing comes out.

Nicholas nods and stands up, tossing the sweatshirt over the bed railing. "Yeah," he chuckles humorlessly, turning away. "I thought so."

"I can explain," she follows him across the room and grabs his hand. "Nick, he just lended it to me when I was cold--"

"So explain why it's still here!" He wheels around and yanks away from Hufflepuff's grasp, his eyes fiery. "Explain why you still have it!"

"I..." When she doesn't finish her sentence, Nicholas shakes his head.

"You told me nothing's ever happened between you two, but be honest, Hufflepuff. Is that true?" Hufflepuff's eyebrows knit together as she looks down at her feet. "Hufflepuff..."

After a beat, she nods slowly. "We...kissed. But we were drunk, and it was a one-time thing, I promise!" Tears well up in her eyes. "I'm sorry I lied to you before, I didn't wanna lose you because I saw how upset you were when I was talking to Slytherin. But I promise we're only friends, nothing more. And I'm with you now, he knows that."

"And you?" Nick's eyes are cold. "Do you know that?"

"Nick...of course I do, what...--"

"I see how you look at him sometimes," he mutters, his fists balled. "And the way he looks at you. I know he has feelings for you, I can just feel it."

"That's not true--"

"How can I trust what you say," Nick explodes. "You lied to me, Hufflepuff."

"I know, I'm sorry." Her vision blurs as she looks up at him with pleading eyes. "It was really shitty of me to do, and I can't take that back now. I understand if you don't wanna be with me anymore...but please, if there's anything I can do to prove how sorry I am."

Her sniffles fill the silence when, at last, Nicholas gingerly wipes a tear away from her cheek. "I still want to be with you," he says quietly. "Just promise you'll never lie to me again."

"I promise." She wraps into his embrace, letting out the breath she was holding. "I'm sorry, Nicholas."

"I know," he murmurs. "You're with me now, and that's all that matters. But you have to promise me something else." He pulls back to look at her.

Hufflepuff wipes her face and nods, giving him a small smile.

"Anything."

guys update i tried finding my files containing the draft and outline of the slytherpuff series plus all my other fic ideas and potential new series, and i found out that all of my files from that specific email were deleted....... 

but i still remember the general ideas of what i wrote so dont worry :’) i pinky promise im gonna release the next part of the series soon

Slytherin x Hufflepuff Slowburn: Chapter 1 —  Scintilla

Scintilla (n.) - a tiny trace or spark of a specified quality or feeling.

THE BEGINNING…

They meet when Hufflepuff needs tutoring in Defense Against the Dark Arts and Slytherin happens to be great at it 

Slytherin is annoyed at first because he thinks that the hufflepuff that he is assigned to is going to be a slow learner 

However, once they start training, Slytherin realizes that yes, Hufflepuff is quite bad at Defense Against the Dark Arts, but she’s very resilient and doesn’t give up easily 

She starts to improve and Slytherin is secretly proud 

Hufflepuff has a special secluded spot near the lake that she likes to go to when she want to relax (it’s very sunny, grassy, and there’s a tree that she can lean against)

One day, she comes to her special spot only to find Slytherin peacefully napping with his back against the tree

Hufflepuff walks closer and Slytherin opens his eyes because he felt a shadow over him that was blocking the sun

He is startled to see someone gazing down on them and whips out his wand, only to lower it when he realizes that it’s Hufflepuff

“Hi!” “Bloody hell, you nearly gave me a heart attack!” “What are you doing here?” “Well, I was napping before you interrupted me.” “I’m sorry, it’s just that no one ever comes here except me.” “Guess I’m the first.” 

Hufflepuff is a bit annoyed at first because this is her special place to be alone but it’s all fine because she doesn’t mind sharing 

Slytherin, who closed his eyes again, opens one to find that Hufflepuff is sitting next to him and doing Charms homework

He sighs but doesn’t complain, because truth be told, he likes Hufflepuff’s company 

Hufflepuff starts to see Slytherin more frequently because Slytherin has taken a liking to her special spot and comes often to read or think 

Whenever Hufflepuff sees Slytherin, she makes small talk and at the beginning, Sly gives bland responses and generally ignores whatever she’s doing, but over time, Slytherin start to feel more comfortable around her and asks questions 

“What’s that in your hand?” “A Rubix cube.” “Sounds very muggle-like.” 

Hufflepuff laughs as Slytherin examines the object with great curiosity and bewilderment 

They move their training sessions from the courtyard to their special spot 

When Hufflepuff disarms Slytherin successfully and catches his wand for the first time, Puff lets out a whoop and Sly can’t help but smile because wow, happiness looks good on Hufflepuff

One day, Slytherin is quietly reading a book when he hears soft snores coming from Hufflepuff, her unfinished painting left forgotten on her lap  

It’s a bit windy and Puff is only wearing a light crew neck sweatshirt and Hufflepuff shorts (which Slytherin rolls his eyes at), so Sly takes off his own jacket and drapes it over Hufflepuff

The glow from the pinkish-red sunset is reflected on Hufflepuff’s face, and Slytherin can’t help but stare 

Was she always this cute? 

Before he knows it, he’s falling asleep to the sound of Hufflepuff’s light snores 

Slytherin wakes up to Hufflepuff shaking him and saying his name; it’s dark out and the crickets are chirping

“Merlin’s beard, we are in so much trouble.” 

Hufflepuff nods grimly as she helps Slytherin up

They try to sneak back into Hogwarts, but Professor Sprout catches them in the entrance hall

“Professor Slughorn and I have been looking everywhere for you two! Please explain yourselves this instant!” 

“We were just hanging out near the Black Lake and lost track of time”

Professor Sprout frowns and glances from Hufflepuff to Slytherin

“Doing what, exactly?”

“We were sleeping together.”

Professor Sprout raises her eyebrows and Hufflepuff blushes when she realizes how that sounded

Slytherin quickly blurts out, “Not like that! I mean, we were, but not in that way. We’re just friends!”

“That wasn’t the only thing we were doing. I was painting while Slytherin was reading a book.”

Sly holds up his book for affirmation but Hufflepuff looks at her empty hands with horror, realizing that she left her painting behind 

Professor Sprout looks at Hufflepuff pointedly

“I’ll be taking twenty points from the Hufflepuff and Slytherin houses.”

Slytherin involuntarily lets out a groan. Great. His house had been in the lead for the most points, but now, they would fall behind. All the other slytherins were going to kill him.  

“Mind you, you’re lucky Professor Slughorn wasn’t the one who caught you first. He would have given you a harsher punishment.”

Hufflepuff and Slytherin nod solemnly and they are finally dismissed 

As they walk up the stairs, Hufflepuff glances at Slytherin and nudges him playfully 

“Friends, huh?” she said with a goofy grin

Slytherin rolls his eyes but manages a small smile 

Before parting ways to their respective common rooms, Hufflepuff turns to Slytherin and looks at him intently

“I’m sorry for getting us into this.” 

“It’s not your fault.”

“But I was the one who fell asleep first.” 

“Hey, don’t take all the credit. I should’ve stayed awake and woken you up when it was time to go.”

“Ok, you got me there. But your Slytherin housemates are gonna be really mad at you for losing house points, aren’t they?” 

Slytherin shrugs. “It’s nothing I can’t handle.”

Hufflepuff smiles

“Goodnight.”

Before Hufflepuff drifts off to sleep, she thinks about what Slytherin had said

“We’re just friends.”

Hufflepuff was pleasantly surprised by that. She already considered Slytherin to be one of her friends, but Puff didn’t think the feeling was mutual 

Hufflepuff smiles and sighs contently

As Slytherin got ready for bed, he found himself looking forward to his future training sessions with Hufflepuff

The last thing he thought about before falling asleep was Hufflepuff, whose face was glowing with warmth and lit up by brilliant colors of red and orange

Slytherin x Hufflepuff Slowburn: Chapter 7 – Possession (Part One)

Slytherin doesn’t see Hufflepuff as often as he used to before she started dating Nicholas a month ago

He finally comes across her at the library–alone, this time

Hufflepuff looks surprised when he appears at her table, but her expression is pleasant as she greets him 

“We should hang out sometime,” he says. “I feel like I haven’t seen you since…well, just in a long time.” 

“How about now? I just finished all my work.” 

Slytherin’s face lights up and he begins to respond when Nicholas appears beside her 

Slytherin looks away as Nicholas and Hufflepuff kiss, and he gives a curt nod when Nicholas says that he needs to pull her away for a moment to talk 

They walk out of the library and stand near the entrance where Nicholas expresses his jealousy, to which Hufflepuff reassures him that Slytherin is just a friend 

“It doesn’t seem like it,” Nicholas says. “I see the way he looks at you.” 

She frowns. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” 

As they argue, Slytherin steps out to see what’s going on and overhears Nicholas

“So you’ve never seen Slytherin as anything more than a friend?” 

Her back facing Slytherin, Hufflepuff lies

“No.”  

At this, Nicholas finally seems to relax and pulls her in for a heated kiss 

Slytherin can’t seem to move from his spot, a searing lump burning his throat as he watches 

He doesn’t know how long he’s been standing there until Nicholas pulls away and spots him 

With a smirk, Nicholas asks if he’s been spying on them. The glint in his eyes tells Slytherin that he probably knew he had been standing there all this time 

“I was just about to leave,” he responds, keeping his voice even. His lungs feel like the air had been sucked out from him

“Maybe some other time for our hangout, then?” Nicholas’s eyes flicker over to Hufflepuff at this, his brows furrowing just the slightest bit

Slytherin’s lips stretch into a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. They are lit with an emotion Hufflepuff can’t quite pinpoint, but it makes her stomach churn 

She watches him leave, unaware of Nicholas as he studies her face
