I had coffee with my buddy Matt this morning and we were both talking about our past lives in bands and coming up in the punk/hardcore scene and how it weirdly prepared us for our careers at a time when careers were the farthest thing from our minds. And it’s a real phenomenon – all over Richmond, I see old hardcore kids who have started businesses from the ground up, done really awesome things, and are working to make this city great. The DIY spirit of hardcore surely influenced that and helped bring it to life.

During our conversation, Matt pointed me to this great post by John Sarvay, who came up in an earlier era of Richmond’s music scene and wrote about how it influenced him. I found a lot of it really resonated with me.

So, fear not punk rock kids – your parents may get upset when you tell them you’re going to spend the summer touring in a beat-up van with your friends instead of getting a job, but really it’s all just extremely unorthodox career training anyway.
