Sylvia Seegrist - 1985 Springfield Mall Shooting
On October 30th, 1985, Sylvia Seegrist entered Springfield Mall armed with a .22 LR Ruger semi-automatic rifle, killing 3 customers and injuring 7 others.
About two hours before initiating her rampage, Sylvia Seegrist entered the Springfield Mall, where she was a frequent visitor whom employees frequently referred to as “Miss Rambo” due to her routinely aggressive demeanor and her habit of wearing military fatigues. Seegrist began her afternoon by purchasing Halloween decorations from a party store followed by a workout session at a fitness club in the mall. After completing these errands, she exited the building and returned to her parked car to prepare for the attack. Inside the vehicle, she changed into the same green military fatigues and retrieved her hunting rifle. Upon exiting the car, she immediately fired at two shoppers at an ATM. She then turned toward the entrance, fatally shooting two-year-old Recife Cosmen, who was waiting outside the mall with his parents. She then returned to the building where she shot and killed 64-year-old Augusto Ferrara and 67-year-old Earl Trout in front of a shoe store, who was hospitalized in a coma before ultimately succumbing to his injuries. Both victims were discovered at the scene by their wives, who had been shopping in other areas of the mall. As she continued, Seegrist approached 24-year-old volunteer firefighter John W. Laufer III with the intent to kill him, but Laufer tackled and disarmed her before she could continue the rampage. When a security guard apprehended her at the scene and questioned her about the crime, she replied, “My parents make me nervous,” Once in custody, she asked detectives how many people she had killed, and if any of her victims were children. She proceeded to express frustration that only two people had been confirmed dead at that time.
Seegrist had a documented history of erratic behavior, as previously noted in the description given by mall employees. Previous violent incidents include stabbing her guidance counselor in the back with a paring knife, attempting to strangle her mother, and throwing a lit cigarette directly into her psychiatrist's face. She heavily abused alcohol and street drugs, which significantly worsened her psychiatric symptoms and frequently caused violent interactions. She was known to blast loud music and shout threats to disturb her neighbors, and she spray painted her apartment walls with violent phrases. She was first hospitalized and diagnosed with schizophrenia and anorexia at age 15, and she was involuntarily committed between 12 and 15 times in the years leading up to the rampage. She was known to harass customers at the mall and publicly praise figures such as James Huberty; she often described spree killings as “good”. An instructor at the fitness club said "she hated everyone and would often talk about shooting and killing people". After enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1984, Seegrist faced severe ostracization during basic training, where she was falsely accused of being a lesbian and became the laughingstock of her platoon. During this time, she developed an obsessive fixation on global conflict and political propaganda, leading her to aggressively study international affairs, teach herself Russian, and express a desire to fight as a guerrilla warrior in Iran. Her erratic behavior resulted in a discharge in early 1985 after only two months of service. Despite her troubled military record and past psychiatric history, she still managed to purchase a hunting rifle at a Best Products catalog showroom after initially being denied a weapon at Kmart.
Prior to the competency hearing, Seegrist was transferred to Norristown State Hospital for evaluation. On March 6th, 1986, she was deemed competent to stand trial and was charged with three counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder. The trial began on June 2nd, during which her erratic courtroom behavior took center stage; she screamed a string of random numbers when asked basic identifying questions, yelled defiance at the judge, burst out giggling when prosecutors read police accounts of her violent past, and periodically swayed from side to side in her chair, staring blankly at the jury box. On June 27th, she was found guilty but mentally ill, and she was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences and seven consecutive 10-year terms. She was sent to the psychiatric specialty hospital Mayview State Hospital for evaluation and was eventually moved to the State Correctional Institution in Muncy, Pennsylvania. Seegrist served her first 2 1/2 years of imprisonment at Norristown State Hospital, and then was transferred to Muncy State Prison for women. While remaining conservative on gun laws to this day, the attack exposed how Pennsylvania tracked gun buyers diagnosed with “psychiatric illnesses”, which is directly responsible for the creation of the Pennsylvania Instant Check System. Prior to the attack, gun buyers were merely required to fill out a paper application and manually select a box stating whether they had ever been committed to a mental institution, which is exactly what Seegrist did. Retailers had no way of verifying her answer, allowing her to easily walk out with a hunting rifle despite her 12 prior involuntary institutionalizations. Beyond firearm sales, the attack also triggered a thorough re-evaluation of Pennsylvania's involuntary commitment standards, forcing stricter treatment on patients with documented histories of violence.

David Kozák Info – Part 1: Childhood and School Years
Family Background and Home Environment:
The family was described as respectable and well-off, leading a secluded lifestyle.
Kozák was raised quite strictly. Witness quote: “The father raised the boy in a very simple way. No girls, no parties, no hobbies. He had to study constantly; mainly, he needed excellent results at school”.
Kozák was not involved in village life, had no friends or contact with residents, and spent most of his time at home. A postal worker recalled that he often came to the post office, picked up his parcel, and left without speaking to anyone.
According to village witnesses who saw Kozák, he looked like a boy who probably stayed at home reading books.
Kozák did not attend the local primary school because there were too few children to open a first-grade class, though his sister studied there.
Kozák’s father, Stanislav, was described as kind, intelligent, quiet, and solitary. He held a managerial role in security at Prague Airport, was well-liked by colleagues, and was called “one of the best colleagues and managers”.
Kozák’s mother, Romana, had a determined character, and worked as a civil engineer. She also served as deputy mayor of the village for two years.
Kozák’s sister was academically successful and worked at the airport. She studied “Population Protection” at the Czech Technical University, writing a highly rated thesis on airport security measures during crises such as pandemics, fires, and terrorist attacks.
Kozák felt stressed at home, saying his parents pressured him academically and punished him for not completing household duties. He also complained of poor sleep and appetite.
Later, during a psychiatric appointment, he also said he felt pressure from his family to socialize more (which he struggled with).
He described his relationship with his family as the closest relationships he had, but noted that he did not have deeper emotional bonds with them. He called his sister and mother “the generals of the family”.
School Background and Development:
Kozák consistently excelled academically and participated in competitions from school onward. He later received an award from the Polish Institute in Prague for his work on the 1846 Kraków and Galician peasant uprisings.
His classmates confirmed that he studied well and was intelligent. “Everyone thought he would achieve the greatest success among all our classmates,” said one classmate to police.
Despite his strong academics, Kozák struggled socially. Former classmates described him as a quiet, inconspicuous introvert who spoke to very few people.
He had significant difficulties forming contacts with people from a young age, which he later complained about in sessions, saying he “did not feel them” and did not understand the concept of friendship.
His romantic life was also unsuccessful. In school years, he awkwardly pursued a girl and behaved in a rather frightening way, resembling stalking. He bought her an expensive birthday gift, but she rejected him and told him not to contact her again.
Some villagers noted that he was willing to talk, or at least tried to talk, with girls, but he was never able to form relationships.
Encouraged by friends to brag, Kozák fired an air rifle at a camp tent where his sister was inside, presenting it as a joke; his father later dismissed concerns, noting they had weapons at home and that David was trained to use them.
In secondary school, he made three friends: two boys and a girl, with whom he remained in very occasional contact even during his university studies.
One friend declined to comment on his relationship with Kozák. Another said that at school they discussed video games, military topics, or history. Witness quote: “We were united by a shared interest in weapons. Sometimes in upper grades we bought air guns, but we never went out to play together”.
Kozák likely had his closest relationship with a girl who later played a key role in the case, as she accompanied him to a psychiatrist and called a hotline on the day of the crime; however, he did not consider the relationship close, saying they only communicated occasionally.
Mental health issues began in school and worsened at university, especially during lockdowns. Thoughts of death emerged in his teenage years, linked to feelings of emptiness, lack of pleasure, loss of meaning, and unmet self-realization.
Interests and Preferences:
Kozák was interested in anime series with unusual, strange themes, partly pornographic. Witness quote: “It seemed to me that it was more an attraction to strangeness than to the content itself, or to pornography”.
Later, this developed into an interest in a certain type of adult movies, preferably Asian, including films in which women are depicted as zombies or corpses.
He showed interest in true crime, especially cases such as Anders Breivik, Viktor Kalivoda, Jiří Straka, and Czech criminal cases in general.
Kozák’s favorite anime was the sci-fi series All You Need Is Kill, with Keiji Kiriya as his favorite character, whom he wrote about in an essay. The story centers on emotional detachment and a time loop of violence and death.
Kozák clearly had an interest in history; in therapy sessions he mentioned that studying at the Faculty of Arts was one of the few activities that brought him at least partial satisfaction and meaning in life.
His interest in history probably appeared in collecting artifacts; during a search of his home, investigators found a Nazi dagger with a swastika and the inscription “Blut und Ehre” (“Blood and Honor”), used by the Hitler Youth.

"He shot himself, shot himself in the head, as I was told
They lived without me for 8 years
Even though he's dead, I love him.
He's my bloodling, my own son. I've been dreaming about him."
thats kind of sad tbh
Elliots’ entire facebook page
Preserved and archived.
Today I locked in and did an internet deep dive, I was able to uncover quite a bit of lost media regarding Elliot. Here’s an archive of his entire facebook page that I recorded, I believe only fragmented pictures of the account are currently in circulation. I’m excited to finally make a post regarding the case that is actually my special interest, he also got me into the community.
He’s not too popular on here, but for the 3 other elliot researchers I may post some hidden gems I found.
Disclaimer: This post is for research, educational and awareness purposes only. I do not condone or encourage violence or harmful rhetoric of any kind.
I don’t own this song, but I just love this song so much haha :D
