Cuauhtemoc, the last tlahtoani of the Mexica, was enthroned after the death of Cuitlahuac. He resisted the attack of Spanish and Indigenous forces in the year 3 Calli, 1521. His name means Eagle Who Descended.

After his capture, on August 13, 1521, he was tortured by the Spanish, who burnt his feet. He was finally hanged in El Salvador in 1525.

The church of Ixcateopan, where, according to the tradition, his mortal remains lie, is an important site of pilgrimage for contemporary people who participate of the Mexicayotl faith. Cuauhtemoc represents resistance, the bravery and the strength of the people who never stopped fighting.

Jade is a stone of fertility and abundance. Its color reminds of that of ripe crops, which are ready for harvest. Its location, close to water sources, associates it with the fertilization of fields. The traditional representation of water in Mesoamerican art includes conch shells and jade beads, symbols of pregnancy and growth. These stones are dedicated to aquatic and rain deities, so it's common to find them in offerings dedicated to Tlaloc and Chalchiuhtlicue, who rule celestial and terrestrial waters, respectively.
