This bike. I just couldn’t pass it without looking at it every single day. The red paint and wicker baskets just made me smile. I just had to give it a moment in the spotlight.Â
This white wash cloth contrasted with the “Live It Like You Mean” quote really makes me think. Is the cleaning cloth living it’s best life? As far as cloths go at least? If only it could speak.Â
All of the elements wired to create sound and vibrate into our minds and hearts at ease. the simple black on black aesthetic really pulls out all of the different textures of these objects.Â
This vendor in particular was very active. They had people dancing and jumping around all week. It was interesting seeing the props on the ground as if they were sleeping and taking a rest before the action to come later in the day.Â
Sugar. Instant energy with a sweet sweet taste. Visually this display was just nice to look at. Generally calm colour pallet.Â
It’s always nice to take a moment to reflect on the support staff for VidCon. They keep us safe and keep everything in order so we can simply focus on all of our experiences and interactions.Â
I saw this man a few times around the conference and really should have stopped to find out what kind of videos he made with the space suit. Either way, with such a character outfit on it was nice seeing him taking a moment before what I assume was going to be a busy day.Â
The YouTube Onstage event generally speaking is loud and action packed. This particular performance of an acrobat had a lovely serene moment with beautiful clouds up on the screen.Â
Sometimes all you need to do is look up. Below in centre court of food truck alley there were many people grabbing a moment to eat. I looked up and realized we were shaded by a tree with beautiful pink flowers.
This game asked this woman to hold a pineapple on her head for whatever reason but it created this interestingly zen pose for what it was.Â
There was just something about this woman that caught my eye. She doesn’t seem rushed or anxious about anything. I wonder what she was thinking about.Â
Sitting by the fountain or setting up morning B-roll - the morning before things wind up at VidCon is a beautiful time.Â
A quiet corner. Up high in the corner of the stairwell is a nice quiet place to look over the conference centre as so many prefer the escalators.Â
VidCon 2018. Slower... quieter
This year I’m posting my images after VidCon rather than during. There’s one pretty major reason for this. This years images were shot with a film camera. More specifically a Nikon FM2 with Portra 400 for those who are curious about those details.Â
That said, the style of shooting is slower and more considered. There are only 34 frames and each cost money. With the slower focused process already in mind I thought it would be interesting to show the quieter simpler parts of VidCon as a theme. Be it a moment, a quiet scene, or an object not always noticed at such a busy event, I hope these photographs show parts of VidCon not typically noticed or thought of.Â
The first couple years of Vidcon the big and little YouTuber's would run into each other in the elevators of The Hyatt in LA. Today the big Youtuber's tower above us as we sit on the cement steps and maybe see them from a distance on a stage protected by guards. This isn't a bad thing, just different. This is the last day of year 8. I've met new friends, reconnected with old friends, and spent time with one of my favourite creators. Until next year friends.
Vidcon is a place to meet new people. It's also where creators reflect on their own journeys around online video creation.
