I met a friend for cocktails a few weeks ago at a spot I wanted to potentially visit for a story. I had been wanting to check it out for a long time and even called ahead to make sure cocktail service would be available when we arrived -- around noon the next day. The voice on the other end of the phone was friendly and cheery and reassured me that yes, cocktails would be pouring. . . . We had a spot at the bar and ordered a couple drinks. Decent drinks. And, since I was planning to feature this spot in a write-up I pulled out my camera and began snapping. I put my camera away. We ordered some food and continued drinking our cocktails. When the food came out I planned to snap a few more, but was immediately told "no photos" Hmm, I asked, even for a story? "Especially for a story" replied the bartender. . . . What's weird about this experience is that it's not the first time in recent memory it's happened -- the other time was at a farmer's market of all places. I know that everyone with a smartphone considers themselves a photographer these days and that there are a lot of bad food/cocktail photos out there in the universe, but come on. . . . I should note, I don't always pull out my camera and start shooting. I read the vibe of the place. If I'm going to be interrupting someone's dining experience I'm not going to take photos. That was not the case here. And, I was including staff or guests in the photos. . . . That said, here's one photo I shot during my time at this bar. What gives? What are your thoughts on taking photos in restaurants and bars?
