You stood in front of the giant mirror in a big fluffy white dress. The dress that his mother helped pick out.
“You could at least act happy that you’re marrying my son,” Jinyoung’s mother commented. Every word that came out of her mouth was directed towards you and how she didn’t think you were qualified to marry her son.
She didn’t have to tell you. You knew that.
“I am happy,” you tell her with a subtle smile. Regardless of how mean she was being to you, she was Jinyoung’s mother. She was your elder and you needed to be respectful.
“This dress is so beautiful, but on you…a complete waste,” she complained. “Irene, sweetheart. Go try on this dress for me. It’ll look perfect on you.”
“Mrs. Park,” you called. She glared at you, hinting for you to stay quiet. You looked down at the floor. Where was Jinyoung?
You sat near the side and watched Jinyoung’s mother pick out the dresses she liked for Irene. There was no doubt Irene was beautiful. She looked like a princess in the wedding dress. Mrs. Park was right, she was more qualified to be his wife.
“I’m going to change out of this,” you said as you waited for them to react. They didn’t. They ignored you.
As you walked back to the changing room, you bumped into someone you least expected to see - Hyewon.
“What are you doing here?” you asked as you walked towards her.
She smirked, “Jinyoung’s mother doesn’t seem to like you very much.”
You rolled your eyes and scoffed. “If she doesn’t like me, do you think you’ll ever get a chance?” you mocked as you crossed your arms in front of your chest.
“You bitch…” she said furiously. She chuckled lightly trying to calm herself down. “You better pray Jinyoung and I never step foot in the same room again, or I swear to god I’ll make him fuck me again.”
“What’s wrong with you?! I was your friend!” you shouted with tears in your eyes. “I treated you like a sister!”
“Please…” she scoffed. “Do you know how hard it was to be your friend? Everyone loves you! Everyone needs you…everyone wants you. I’m only your replacement!”
“You just didn’t want to believe. Even when Jinyoung was fucking me, I knew…I fucking knew he was thinking about you,” she blurted. Tears fell from your eyes as you quietly sobbed. “Now you have to live with the fact that he fucked me…” she smiled, stepping closer to you. “Tell me, how does that feel?”
You pushed pass her and ran into the changing room. You ripped the wedding dress off you and changed back into your normal clothes. You couldn’t do this…you couldn’t do this anymore. When you were done changing, Hyewon was already gone. You walked past Irene and Jinyoung’s mother who didn’t even bother to look up at you.
You ran into Jinyoung on the way out. “What’s going on?” Jinyoung asked as he tried to stop you from running away. “Y/N, talk to me.”
You looked up at him with tears in your eyes. “I can’t do this…” you sobbed. “I can’t…”
“Hey…talk to me. What happened?” Jinyoung comforted.
“No,” you whimpered. “No…I can’t do this.”
“I thought we talked about this,” he whispered as he tried to pull you in for a hug.
“We’ll get married…” he sighed. “We’ll get married and once everything settles down, if you really want a divorce we can get one.”
“You don’t get it Jinyoung. It will never settle down because you’ll always be that guy. You will always be that guy that left me,” you cried. “You will always be Park Jinyoung - the man that everyone is out to get,” you said as you swallowed your tears. “So no, it will never settle down.”
“I’m doing my best…” he whispered.
“I know…” you agreed. “I appreciate you trying to save me, but you don’t have to.”
“I do. You’re my liability.”
You shook your head, “No Jinyoung, you made me your liability. You didn’t have to do that…you’re not obligated to do that.”
“I love you,” he confessed. “That’s why you’re my liability.”
“I can go somewhere far far away. A place where no one knows me. We don’t have to get married.”
“No…” Jinyoung declined. “I promised I was going to spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”
“Jinyoung…” you whimpered.
"I said no. Follow me,” he said as he dragged you back into the bridal shop. “Mother, stop this right now.”
“Jinyoung! I am your mother,” she reminded, cautioning him on his attitude.
“It’s because you’re my mother I’m wasting my time talking to you about this,” he claimed. “I am marrying Y/N and I can do this anywhere in the world without your permission. If you want to be there on our special day, please stay out of the wedding planning. All you need to do is show up,” Jinyoung threatened. His grip on your hand was tight. He wanted you to know he was going to be on your side from now on.
“Are you sure you don’t need my help?” you teased as you watched Jinyoung struggle to drop the steak in the sizzling hot pan.
“I got this,” he assured you. “Just sit and wait to eat.”
“Okay…okay,” you giggled as you watched him carefully. You watched his every move - the way he attentively cut the vegetables, careful not to cut his fingers off.
You could tell Jinyoung was trying really hard to show you how much he loved you - from the way he treated his mother to him cooking dinner for you. You wanted to forgive him. You really did, but there was still one thing that bothered you. Why did he leave you that night and why did he never call if he loved you that much? If he really was protecting to you all this time, what changed? Why didn’t he continue to ignore you?
“What are you thinking about?” Jinyoung asked, worried.
“Can I ask you something?” you whispered softly as you cut your steak.
“What happened that night? Why did you have to leave so suddenly?” you asked. You watched him set his silverware down before slowly looking up at you.
“I wanted to protect you. It was for your own good,” he lied.
“If that’s what you were really doing, then what changed? Why didn’t you just keep ignoring me?” you refuted. “Please don’t lie to me.”
“It matters because this is the one thing that’s standing between us,” you explained.
“Please baby, let it go.” Jinyoung got up from the table and walked away from his unfinished dinner. You sighed. Were you asking too much? Was it wrong for you to want to know?
