It makes me sick when I see Russians on Pinterest saving photos of Ukrainian traditional costumes, jewelry, and other cultural elements into boards called things like “Malorossiya Province,” “random folk stuff,” or “Ukrainians in Russia.”

Even modern photos with Ukrainian captions aren’t safe from being saved and relabeled in that same colonial, imperial language. And no matter how many times we speak up and ask them to leave our photos alone, they never listen.

At the Paralympics in Milan, organizers confiscated Ukrainian national symbols from the family of a Ukrainian champion who had come to support him

This was reported on television by the President of the National Paralympic Committee of Ukraine, Valerii Sushkevych.

“The family of a Ukrainian champion came from Ternopil. They bought tickets and entered the stadium with a Ukrainian flag, wearing Ukrainian clothing. They were stopped, the flag was taken away, and the champion’s mother had a scarf with a Ukrainian ornament confiscated. And only after they were, excuse me, stripped of these things were they allowed onto the stadium grounds,” Sushkevych said.

He did not name the family involved in the incident and said that the Ukrainian side is preparing an official statement.

“There will be our statement on this today. The whole family came from Ternopil at their own expense — the children, the father, the mother. That same night there was bombing from Russia. This is an absolutely cynical act toward the Ukrainian team. We continue our struggle, and the pressure on us continues,” the president of Ukraine’s Paralympic Committee added.

Meanwhile, at the Olympics earlier this year, even when Russia competed as a “neutral” country, Russian flags and other symbols still appeared several times without anyone interfering. No one stopped them, and Russian spectators were treated quite gently.

At the Paralympics, Russia is competing under its national symbols, so it seems that this time it is Ukrainians who are not allowed to appear with theirs at the same event.

First, Ukraine was told it could not display the map of the country on its uniforms. Then an athlete was told to remove earrings saying “Stop War.” And now even showing in a few simple ways that you are from Ukraine apparently goes too far.

Four years ago I woke up at 5 am from distant explosions. I asked my boyfriend if he heard them too, he said he didn’t and I should go back to sleep. I tried to calm myself down, went on the internet, it was silent, no news or explanations. I told myself that those were just some weird street noises. Half an hour later I woke up again from the same noses, but louder. This time, there were news: russia launched a full scale invasion. In these 4 years I’ve felt layers of fear, hatred and sorrow I never thought were possible. The war completely changed my perception of the world and justice, it forced me to reevaluate everything in my life and everything I believed in. I’m not very good with words, so today I’ll be sharing some of my very personal artworks exploring some of the complicated feelings and experiences I had over the past 4 years. The war still goes on, in fact it has been going on since 2014 not 2022. russians still kill, rape, torture Ukrainian people, destroy our cities and do everything in their power to erase our nation from this world. For people who are sure that russo-ukrainian war begun only in 2022:

There is no "Biden's war". There is no "I would finish that war if I was a president". There were Ukrainian POWs long before February of 2022. There also were occupied cities, mass graves, torturing sites, etc BEFORE February of 2022. Unfortunately it cannot be proven yet and scales are yet to uncover because territories are occupied by russian armed forces and russian residents which moved after Ukrainians were removed from the territories but still.

The real scale of war is actively diminished by trump and his administration. They simply don't understand for how long it's been since russian soldiers occupied Crimea and Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Please, remember that war isn't over.
