the layers of interpreting the pilot are like okay this is a story about brothers hunting a ghost and arguing about their childhoods cool -> ohhh the ghost says sam hasn’t cheated yet because she’s about to molest him -> ohhhhhhhhh the ghost says Sam hasn’t cheated yet because he’s currently emotionally cheating on Jessica narratively with his brother -> the ghost can’t go home that seems pretty standard -> wait why did Dean say right after “I’ll take you home” only for Sam’s home to be completely destroyed -> ohhhh. ohhhhhhhhhh.

and then well ep9 has Dean crying into the phone because he doesn’t feel like he can go home either, and this whole season is about the tension between home and family and the road and leaving, and every episode has characters paralleling the brothers, and everything is about leaving each other or choosing each other, and the horror has always been: something horrible happens in your house. you can never go home again.
